As one of the breakout hits of the 2009-2010 TV season, The Vampire Diaries featured murder, intrigue and sex.

But just because her character got it on with Paul Wesley's Stefan Salvatore, Nina Dobrev has an unfortunate message for male fans of her show: you won't see me naked!

“I’m very content with not being nude on national television - I enjoy True Blood myself and I watch the show, but I’m happy that bra and underwear is as stripped down as I can get for [The Vampire Diaries].”

Dobrev uttered these words at the Monte Carlo Television Festival, where she was also asked to compare The Vampire Diaries with similar programming available to viewers: True Blood and Twilight. She said:

“I don’t think that we’re necessarily competitors. We’re all kind of in the same genre... but they are all very different. It’s like apples and oranges. I have friends in all three of the shows that are vampire related, so I’m very happy for all of our successes.”

While Nina will be keeping her shirt on, there's good news for female viewers of the show: Wesley and Ian Somerhalder (pictured below with their co-star in Monte Carlo) will NOT be. New episodes suddenly can't come fast enough, can they?

It was written off as a Twilight Saga clone at first, but The Vampire Diaries has made a solid impression on viewers.

This is a truly intriguing drama on The CW, anchored by a gorgeous cast. It's led by Ian Somerhalder, Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley.

The threesome posed for a series of photos with Nylon magazine this week, with each answering a question about the surprising hit:

Dobrev, on similarities with other vampire franchises: "When the show first started... you automatically thought Twilight.  But once you continue, there's a whole other side of it that goes a lot deeper... It's about letting everyone know that we're different but we all respect each other."

Wesley, on gratitude for Twilight: "Do I thing the show would be successful as it is, if it weren’t for all that? No.”

Somerhalder, on initial reaction to Damon Salvatore: “[My character] is gonna be the coolest character on television. There was no doubt about it. It reminded me of Sawyer, Josh Holloway’s character on Lost. He was always the character I secretly wished I could play.”

Ding! Ding!

It's about to be on between Twi Hards and Diary Devotees.

A few weeks after New Moon broke box office records, and The Vampire Diaries debuted to strong ratings on The CW, at least one journalist is taking a controversial side: he says the latter franchise is superior to the former.

Why does Ari Karpel of The New York Post prefer Paul Wesley and company to Robert Pattinson and his much-hyped saga? He lists a few reasons:

1. Blood and gore: The Vampire Diaries is "a more traditional vampire horror tale than Twilight," Karpel writes, as the movie series focuses more on romance than murder. After all, he points out, the Cullens don't even have fangs.

The Salvatore brothers, conversely, flash theirs on every episode. Moreover, there's a growing body count in the fictional CW town of Mystic Falls. Gruesome deaths, not longing stares, are around every corner.

2. SEX! Simply put, characters have it on The Vampire Diaries. So far, this isn't the case in the Twilight Saga, as the newspaper accuses that franchise of pushing "falsely neutered innocence."

3. Contrasting heroines: Bella is a blank slate, Karpel says. Fans can project themselves on her, but she has no actual personality. Elena, however "sets an example for young girls as a strong-minded woman." She asks questions and appears truly horrified, as most people would, upon learning Stefan is a vampire.

The Vampire Diaries also came first, of course. While people accuse the show of ripping off the movie, it's actually based on a book series that preceded Stephenie Meyer's collection.

There you have it. Agree? Disagree? Weigh in below with your thoughts on these fang-based franchises: Which do you prefer?

After conquering the country music world last night, Taylor Swift said she was seeking a new challenge.

Kevin Williamson, a producer on The Vampire Diaries, has one for the singing senstion: come aboard my show!!!

Influential Celebrity

"I'm desperate to have [Swift] come play a vampire," Williamson told E! News. "Wouldn't she make an amazing Kirsten Dunst circa Interview With the Vampire type? I cannot tell you how hard I'm trying to get her - I would kill to have her on the show!"

Swift is dating Taylor Lautner, who stars in his own vampire-based franchise. This casting almost makes too much sense, doesn't it?

You tell us: should Taylor Swift guest star on The Vampire Diaries?

It's a great time to be a vampire.

Opening night screenings for New Moon are already sold out. Adam Lambert says he'll dress as a blood sucker for Halloween.

And, now, The CW has announced a full-season pick-up for The Vampire Diaries.

It was an easy decision for the network, considering the show set a ratings record for its series premiere and has remained competitive on Thursday nights. Fans can't get enough of Ian Somerhalder as Damon Salvatore.

Have you been watching it? Do you like it? Or do you really, really, really like it?

Move over, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson. Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley have carved a niche for themselves in vampire lore.

What's the deal with hot vampires striking out with women?!?

Earlier this week, Robert Pattinson complained that he can't get a date.

Now, in an interview with Teen Vogue, Vampire Diaries star Paul Wesley tells the magazine he wasn't always the most popular kid in school.

"I definitely wasn't invited to any of the cool parties," he said. "Girls didn't like me that much. I didn't even go to my prom."

What else did Wesley have to say? A few excerpts from the article:

On the success of The Vampire Diaries: "I've had cameos on some cool shows. But it's nice to now be doing something that I'm involved in from the beginning."

On interacting with the Twilight Saga cast while shooting in Vancouver: "The cast was staying at our hotel. We saw them everywhere and hung out all the time. They're actually really nice people."

On comparisons to that film franchise: "They have vampires and high school romance in common, but that's about it."

We gotta hand it to The Vampire Diaries.

Accused of being a rip-off of the Twilight Saga, even though the aforementioned book series came out prior to Stephanie Meyer's novels, The CW hit winked at the controversy this week.

During an exchange with another character, Damon Salvatore - played brilliantly by Ian Somerhalder - puts down the book he's been reading and says:

What's so special about this Bella girl? Edward's so whipped!

We almost spit out our Strawberry Kimi Gatorade at the line. Damon then says the book "has it all wrong," regarding how humans are turned into vampires. It was a funny, unexpected moment; one we hope Twilight fans have a sense of humor about.

Considering the rave reviews Somerhalder has been receiving, it might be more apt to now ask again: Who makes the hotter pretend vampire?

Based on its impressive ratings to so far, millions of people around the country love The CW's Vampire Diaries.

But there's one important individual that is especially pleased with the series: L.J. Smith, the author that penned the novels on which this small screen version is based.

"I think they have done an incredible job of interpreting it, especially presenting it for a teen audience," she told MTV. "I love the music. I love the cinematography, I think the cast is fabulous. I especially like Damon. Ian Somerhalder does very well. But I really, really like the Elena that they picked, Nina Dobrev... she's a great actress. And I love the Stefan that they've picked."

We love them all, too, but we're especially taken with Somerhalder.

Facing inevitable comparisons to Robert Pattinson and the Twilight Saga, Somerhalder has created a unique character, one that can go from sweet to savage in seconds. These screen shots are a great example:

  • Ian as Damon
  • Fangs Bared

You really don't wanna make Damon Salvatore angry; or hungry, for that matter.

Have you been watching Vampire Diaries? Are you happy with it?

Warning: the following photo is highly dangerous and illegal.

In late August, Nina Dobrev, Candice Accola, Kayla Ewell, and Sara Canning - cast members on The Vampire Diaries - were arrested by police in Georgia and charged with disorderly conduct because they posed for the picture below.

Reportedly, drivers phoned the cops and complained about unusual, inappropriate activity taking place on a local bridge. What did that activity entail?

If you can handle it, see for yourself:

Four actresses from The Vampire Diaries dared to challenge the police by posing for this photo.

Said actress Kayla Ewell of the incident:

“We are not the type of girls who flash our breasts. In all honesty, the size of my breasts aren’t necessarily something people would be interested in. It’s so ridiculous. I would never do that.”

This is a very strange story.

On August 22, a contingent of stars from The Vampire Diaries were arrested in Forsyth, Georgia. Their crime? Posing too seductively for a photo shoot.

Laker Fans

Actresses Nina Dobrev, Candice Accola, Kayla Ewell, and Sara Canning, (as well as photographer Tyler Shields) were taken into custody by Georgia cops and charged with disorderly conduct because drivers reportedly called in about kids flashing others from a local bridge.

Police officers instructed the show's stars to reveal identification before taking them to the sheriff’s office, booking them and taking the mug shots shown above.

Shields posted $4,000 in fines and described the Georgia police as possessing a "flair for the dramatic."

In other show news, The Vampire Diaries broke every record The CW has for a series premiere this week. You really should watch it.
