Linny Boyette has passed away. If you're a viewer of NBC's Today Show, the name may ring a bell, and it earned a special sendoff from the anchors.

"For so many years, the first person we saw" was Boyette, said Matt Lauer this morning on Today, before moving on to discuss Miley Cyrus' sexual peak.

Boyette was an enormous fan of the show, and viewers often saw him on TV, standing with the crowds gathered outside the show in New York City.

Now, Today is mourning the loss of the supporter who died Sunday after complications from a heart attack, reported Natalie Morales. Boyette was 71.

A military veteran born in England, Linny took the subway from his home in the Bronx, N.Y., to arrive on the plaza outside Today by about 5:30 a.m.

One Direction has set another record.

The boy band, who holds the mark for most VEVO video views in 24 hours, performed this morning on Today in front of what Matt Lauer described as "the biggest crowd" the show has ever had in its plaza.

Watch them make 18,000 spectators scream with a rendition of "What Makes You Beautiful."

It's been an eventful week for the One Direction members.

Zayn Malik got engaged to Perrie Edwards, while Liam Payne defended Sophia Smith and told off haters online who gave his new girlfriend a hard time.

Even Al Roker can't stand to watch The Today Show these days.

With ratings for this NBC staple shrinking by the day, everyone's favorite weatherman made history this morning: he overslept!

Roker subsequently missed his "Wake Up with Al” segment on The Weather Channel, but made it to the Today set in time to be mocked by his co-anchors.

“After 39 years, it happened. I overslept and missed a show. Missed #WUWA. But will be on time for @today,” Tweeted an embarrassed Roker at 5:41 a.m.

Of course, this is merely the second most embarrassment incident of Roker's career. In January, he admitted to once pooping his pants at The White House.

There's also been chatter in the past that Roker is trying to sabotage Today, but if 5:41 a.m. is over-sleeping, we can likely cut the guy some slack.

Matt Lauer is not a popular man around The Today Show set these days.

That's been the case for a long time, of course, but Radar Online claims Lauer is especially under fire right now because nine employees were recently canned - and the anchor's alleged refusal to take a pay cut is being blamed for their pink slips.

Downtrodden Matt Lauer

“It has really irked the staff because Matt is the highest paid journalist in the business, and he only works four days a week!" the insider says. "If he had agreed to a one percent pay cut, those jobs could have been saved.”

Lauer earns $25 million per year, but rumors continue to persist that Today may fire its lead anchor.

An unidentified man pulled out a knife and sliced himself open this morning in Rockefeller Center.

The incident took place around 7:50 during Today's live broadcast, though NBC did not catch it on camera. A few minutes later, Matt Lauer updated viewers on what took place.

"There was an incident a short time ago," he said. "A man attempted to harm himself with a knife. He did manage to cut himself. He was controlled by our security team out there. However, he did harm himself, and he is being attended to by medical personnel. So, we're keeping the area clear for law enforcement."

Its no secret that Matt Lauer and Ann Curry did not get along well during the latter's tenure as co-host of Today.

But a new report suggests Curry has plenty of company in that regard, as an insider tells Radar Online:

“The way Matt treats staffers at work is so derogatory and dismissive... He is so demeaning to many people on the staff. He is cordial to his fellow hosts and the senior executives, but to anyone below him they say he treats them like dirt.”

Dirt, of course, could also describe ratings for the program, which consistently now loses out to Good Morning America.

In an interview this week with Howard Stern, Katie Couric acknowledged a return to The Today Show has at least been broached between her and her former bosses.

The talk shot host worked alongside Matt Lauer for years and the morning program never really recovered from her departure, dropping to record-low ratings over the past few months.

"There were some cautious overtures to me to possibly come back to the Today Show but then they sort of evaporated," Couric told Stern.

With Ann Curry long gone, with Matt Lauer facing constant criticism and with Today ratings falling each week, producers are reportedly turning to their the only woman they see as a possible savior:

Yes, the same Katie Couric who co-anchored the morning program from 1991-2006.

“They’re calling Katie and begging for her to return, saying the morning couch on NBC is where she belongs," an insider supposedly tells The National Enquirer. "They want her to save Matt and the show.”

Excerpts from a new book have been released and they echo a previous report regarding Ann Curry and her firing from Today:

Matt Lauer may suck, but producers were to blame for the horrible situation at that NBC program.

Ann Curry Yellow Dress

In "Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV," Brian Stelter writes that Curry received never-ending flak from those around her, with one staff members telling the author:

"A lot of time in the control room was spent making fun of Ann's outfit choices or just generally messing with her."
