The publicity machine for The Dark Knight Rises is officially revving up.

A promotional image of Tom Hardy as Bane has been released, along with a Twitter handle called @TheFireRises and a new website. Check out the image right here:

Christian Bale, of course, will return to the franchise as Bruce Wayne/Batman, while Gary Oldman comes back back as Commissioner Gordon. Aside from Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt will appear as John Blake, a special assignment cop.

Moreover, Anne Hathaway has signed on as Catwoman, while Marion Cotillard will portray Miranda Tate, a Wayne Enterprises employee. The movie will come out in on July 20, 2012.

It's official: Joseph Gordon-Levitt has been confirmed for a key role in The Dark Knight Rises.

The Inception star will take on the character of Alberto Falcone in the summer 2012 blockbuster, the son of mafia boss Carmine Falcone, played by Tom Wilkinson in Batman Begins.

A source close to the film says the villain known as "The Holiday Killer" returns to Gotham "to take over the underworld once ruled by his father before the arrival of Batman."

Anne Hathway will play Catwoman in this installment of the franchise, while Juno Temple and Marion Cotillard will also appear. The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters on July 20, 2012.

UPDATE: Sources now say Gordon-Levitt is on board, but will NOT portray The Holiday Killer. We'll have more on this role as news breaks.

The plot will reportedly focus on the League of Shadows, a vigilante group led by the daughter of Ra al Ghul, Talia (Marion Cotillard).

As Bane, Tom Hardy will star as Talia's muscle and possible love interest, while Joseph Gordon-Levitt portrays another villain connected to the organization. Then there's Anne Hathaway's Catwoman.

Look for this iconic character to join forces with the Caped Crusader and battle the aforementioned enemies.

No offense to The Oscars. And we still adore you, Glee. But Anne Hathaway has signed on for the role of a lifetime.

The Academy Awards host will portray Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises, the next installment of the Batman franchise that will hit theaters in 2012. The upcoming Glee guest star beat out Jessica Biel and Keira Knightley, among others, for the part.

Says director Christopher Nolan: “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story.”

Warner Brothers also revealed that Tom Hardy will play Bane in the blockbuster. But back to Hathaway: Will she make a good Catwoman?

Are you ready for the The Dark Knight to rise?

Christopher Nolan has revealed the title for the third installment in his Batman series. Slated for a summer 2012 release, it will be called The Dark Knight Rises. The director has also revealed one more tidbit about the wildly-anticipated film: The Riddler will NOT be the villain.

"We’ll use many of the same characters as we have all along, and we’ll be introducing some new ones," Nolan said of the script.

The Dark Knight is considered one of the best movies in the history of Hollywood. It earned Heath Ledger a posthumous Oscar for his portrayal of The Joker. What do you think of the title for the follow-up?
