Phil Mickelson won the 2013 British Open Championship with a superb final round as the other contenders, including Tiger Woods, faded from contention.

Mickelson captured the famed Claret Jug for the first time and his fifth major championship with a 5-under 66 Sunday, tied for the best round of the week.

The left-hander birdied four of the last six holes to win by three shots and emphatically erase the memory of this year's U.S. Open heartbreak.

"This is such an accomplishment for me," Mickelson said. "I never knew if I'd be able to develop the game and the shots to play links golf effectively."

"To play what is arguably the best round of my career, to putt the way I putted, to shoot the round of my life, it just feels amazing to win the Claret Jug."

Mickelson, 43, has eight runner-up finishes in golf's four major tournaments, but has now won three of the four in his remarkable Hall of Fame career.

Congrats, Phil!

Elin Nordegren actually approves of Lindsey Vonn, according to a new report.

Yes, Tiger Woods' ex-wife, new girlfriend and kids are all a big happy family.

  • Elin Nordegren Smiles

A day after news broke that Vonn would "never" marry the golfer (or anyone else), Page Six reports that his former spouse is fond of his new flame.

Elin Nordegren "really likes Lindsey and thinks she is a good influence on Tiger,” a source said of the model, who was married to Woods from 2004-2010.

To think, just last month, the talk was that she hated Vonn so hard. Maybe she's come around? Or that was never true? It's rather difficult to say.

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is accused of sending an incriminating text to a Hooters waitress ... on his own wedding day.

Hooters girl and Virginia Commonwealth University student Meredith Barber offered up "proof" in the form of a screen shot of their text exchange.

"Come on bae," the QB reportedly wrote to Barber before sending a shirtless image of himself with his head cut off, along with a smiley face icon.

When Meredith Barber (right) didn't respond to the NFL star's alleged advances, he wrote, "Well ok I give up I guess. See you in a few weeks kid."

The texts were dated July 6, in the early hours of RG III's wedding day to longtime girlfriend Rebecca Liddicoat (left). But are they even legit?

Marc Anthony is addressing his recent "God Bless America" performance at the MLB All-Star Game - and criticism that he's not American enough to perform it.

A month after Texas’ Sebastien de la Cruz earned racist tweets after performing the National Anthem at the NBA Finals, Anthony faced similar Twitter backlash.

We won't even print them here, because it's beyond absurd, but Anthony (of Puerto Rican descent and born in the U.S.) addressed the hatred yesterday:

“You know, something happened that I really wanted to mention, and I wanted to clarify," he said on Live with Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan.

"You know, me singing the national anthem, there were some statements made that people were upset that they would have somebody from another country sing the national anthem.”

Michael Vick knows he may never change some people's minds - heck, the guy still receives death threats - but he called in to TMZ yesterday and sounded quite sincere:

The ex-convict of a quarterback says he's a changed man.

Lindsey Vonn is making headlines at the British Open in Scotland, but not because of her famous boyfriend, world #1 golfer Tiger Woods.

Just for #Dufnering.

Vonn posted this photo on Instagram showing herself, Fred Couples' girlfriend Nadine Moze and PGA pro Jason Dufner relaxing in his signature pose:

The Dufnering phenomenon, in case you missed it, began in March, when a photo of the golfer slouched in a classroom during a charity trip emerged.

Check out the original picture below, via a Tweet by Keegan Bradley (also a PGA pro), who gave his friend Dufner a well-deserved ribbing over it:

We've added plenty of alley-oop dunks to our THG Sports section, but this one would give even LeBron James and teammates a run for their money.

It involves seven guys, a swimming pool, a slide, a trampoline and a rapid-fire series of passes culminating in an epic finishing, tomahawk dunk.

How many tries do you think it took them to execute this? And were any injuries sustained in the process? We may never know for sure.

But check out the summer boredom awesomeness below!

He's a winner in the swimming pool and, apparently, in the dating pool.

Record-breaking Olympian Michael Phelps walked the ESPY Awards red carpet last night with Golf Channel personality Win McMurry as his date, the same blonde beauty for whom he caddied in May.

"Thanks @MichaelPhelps - great caddy work this week! Fun times," she Tweeted at the time, along with a photo of the pair.

Under fire for off-the-field actions yet again, Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel admitted yesterday that it's time for him to grow up.

JManz

Maziel answered every question thrown his way during a 30-minute Q&A at SEC Media Day yesterday, some of which were even about football.

He said he largely enjoys the spotlight that comes with winning the Heisman Trophy last year, even if it includes scandalous headlines at times.

The 20-year-old sophomore and Texas A&M quarterback's most recent misstep came last weekend when he attended the Manning Passing Academy.

Jack Hoffman wasn't just among the winners at the 2013 ESPY Awards. He was the one whose "Moment" was named the very best of the sports year.

You may not have heard of Jack, but that's part of what makes it so special.

A seven-year-old cancer patient, he got the opportunity of a lifetime when the Nebraska football team put him in for a play during its spring game.

What happened, as you can see below, left not a dry eye in the house:

Like fellow ESPY winner Robin Roberts, Hoffman was dealt a tough hand, but through sports, he was able to find some unforgettable, uplifitng moments.
