Penn State football coach Joe Paterno has been fired amid the sexual abuse scandal that has roiled the university. He announced yesterday he would retire at season's end, only to be dismissed immediately just hours later.

The university's board of trustees voted late Wednesday night to fire Paterno.

The 84-year-old legend was not directly involved in the scandal, but in the wake of the arrest of Paterno's former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky on child sex abuse charges, criticism of JoePa for not doing enough to report and stop it ran rampant.

Paterno

PSU President Graham Spanier resigned right away. Paterno, who had been head coach at Penn State for 46 years, hoped to his own terms. Didn't happen.

Paterno and Spanier are just two university officials who have been under fire for not going to police with their knowledge of Sandusky's alleged sex abuse.

Hundreds of students rallied on the PSU campus last night - many chanting support for Paterno - but the trustees were steadfast in defending their decision.

Jerry Sandusky has been charged with 40 crimes, including inappropriate touching and statutory rape. He is accused of violating eight boys over 15 years.

Joe Paterno is college football's all-time winningest coach with 409 victories, but leaves with a legacy forever tainted after this shocking turn of events.

Should Penn State have fired Joe Paterno?

No one thought it would end this way for Joe Paterno: the iconic Penn State football coach has announced his retirement, effective at the end of this season, due to the ongoing sex scandal surrounding the university's athletic department.

In 2002, Paterno learned that former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky may have abused a boy in a locker room shower, but only reported the incident to the athletic director, as opposed to the police.

"I am absolutely devastated by the developments in this case. I grieve for the children and their families, and I pray for their comfort and relief," the record-breaking coach state in a statement, adding:

"I have decided to announce my retirement effective at the end of this season. At this moment the Board of Trustees should not spend a single minute discussing my status. They have far more important matters to address. I want to make this as easy for them as I possibly can.

This is a tragedy. It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more."

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick may soon be caught up in a naked photo scandal, if a woman trying to hawk a “full frontal” picture of him has her way.

According to reports, the unnamed female is shopping around a pic of Michael Vick naked to various media outlets in an attempt to secure a big payday. Wonderful.

Vick’s camp dismissed the story, saying he has better things to worry about - like losing to the Bears 30-24 last night - but doesn’t outright deny the photo exists.

"The only thing Mike has on his mind is his date with the Chicago Bears this evening,” his rep said. “The rest of what this woman is claiming isn't worth dignifying."

According to one website the woman contacted, the pic is clearly Vick due to the tats “that appear all over his body including his signature super man tattoo [sic].”

The woman claims the photo of Vick, whose NFL comeback after a two-year prison term for running a dogfighting ring is the stuff of legend, is less than a year old.

“He is in the bathroom of the hotel room the night before the game taking the photos of himself,” she claims.  “It is from the neck down with all tattoos visible.”

So ... his face isn't visible. How convenient.

Boxing great Joe Frazier died Monday after a battle with liver cancer. He was 67.

The fighter will forever be associated with Muhammad Ali, who he defeated for the first time in the legend's career (taking him down in March 1971), and who fought him two additional times in what became a storied sports rivalry.

For better or worse, Joe Frazier is forever linked to his biggest competitor.

Ali and Frazier

Joe Frazier (right) takes it to Muhammad Ali.

"That was the greatest thing that ever happened in my life," Frazier said of beating Ali, but that biggest night was one that would never come again.

Ali successfully avenged his loss with a win over Frazier in 1974 at MSG, then bested him again a year later in the famed "Thrilla in Manila" bout.

Joe Frazier was a relentless, undersized heavyweight who nevertheless ruled the division as champion, even if Ali's shadow later loomed over him.

"I will always remember Joe with respect and admiration," Ali said in a statement. "My sympathy goes out to his family and loved ones."

The Penn State athletic department is facing serious charges of covering up sexual abuse, following an indictment of former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky on 40 counts, including inappropriate touching and statutory rape.

Sandusky, who retired in 1999, is accused of abusing eight boys over a 15-year period; while athletic director Timothy Curley and Vice President of Business and Finance Gary Schultz resigned from the university last night and have been charged with perjury and failure to report Sandusky's behavior to police.

The latter two face seven years in prison if convicted. Sandusky faces life behind bars.

Terrell Owens may have had more reasons to off himself than originally thought. His fiscal situation is so grim, he filed papers in THREE SEPARATE child support cases to have his payments lowered, given that he makes a whopping $0.

He has four kids by four different ladies in all. Financially sound.

The former NFL star is currently waging legal battles with:

Broke Terrell Owens

WHO: These four women. WHAT: Tens of thousands a month.

Monique Reynolds: T.O. and Monique have an 11-year-old son together. He paid $20,000 a month in support until last year, when it was reduced to $11,202.

Kimberly Floyd: They share a 7-year-old daughter, for whom T.O. was ordered to pay $20,000 a month for back in 2005. In 2008, that sum fell to $15,000.

Samelia Miller: Miller gave birth to a son by the football star back in 2006. He was ordered to pay $13,400 a month in support; That remains unchanged.

Melanie Paige Smith: Terrell Owens was ordered to pay $5,000 a month for their daughter back in 2007. He plans to request a "modification" here, too.

In each of the cases where T.O. is requesting a reduction in child support payments, he says in his declaration, "My currently monthly income is zero ($0)."

In the papers, T.O. also claims to pay $62,366/month for various properties, and has one already in foreclosure. That's almost worth a 911 call right there.

Jeremy Mayfield, the former NASCAR star who was suspended indefinitely in 2009 for various drug offenses, has reportedly been arrested for possession of meth.

Mayfield, 42, got popped on Tuesday at his western North Carolina home and charged with possession of methamphetamine, according to The Associated Press.

Records from the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office indicate that he was charged with possessing 1.5 grams of meth. Here's Jeremy Mayfield's mug shot ...

The former Pocono 500 winner posted $3,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in district court on Wednesday, and he may face other charges as well.

Officials tell the AP that approximately $100,000 worth of merchandise from businesses in neighboring Lincoln County was found in Mayfield’s home.

The items found included welding equipment, truck parts and various other items that were reported stolen. He denies this - and the meth possession.

Daniel Marin, Mayfield’s D.C.-based attorney said that the search of his client’s home was made on a “baseless allegation,” and he is denying all charges.

Mayfield showed promise in his early racing career but was suspended in 2009 when NASCAR said he tested positive for meth from a random drug test.

Not a great stretch for Terrell Owens these days.

The former NFL great wore out his welcome with the league and wasn't asked to any tryouts this fall. Then he possibly tried to off himself by OD-ing last week.

Now, dude's battling child support woes as well.

Owens, Terrell

Terrell Owens' rep says he should be paying less in child support to baby mama Monique Reynolds than back in the days when he, you know, got paid a lot.

Owens wants a judge reduce the payments he's making, and for them to "mirror his income today and not be based on income from over four years ago."

T.O. was due in court in Northern California for a child support hearing on October 24, but he did not show up. Lawyers for Reynolds wouldn't reschedule.

The former Pro Bowl wide receiver's audition for prospective NFL teams was the next day. No one showed up to that one either ... besides T.O. that is.

Here's hoping we won't hear another Terrell Owens 911 call this week.

Eva Longoria and Matt Barnes? That's the rumor of the day.

Having divorced San Antonio Spurs star Tony Parker in 2010, Eva was rumored to be dating Matt after the New York Post reported a dalliance on Sunday.

The Texas-born actress "may have her eye on a new baller," they said, noting that the two were "very flirty" while dining with friends in NYC Thursday.

"There was definitely a spark between Eva and Matt They weren't seated next to each other, but you could tell there was something between them ..."

"There was a little hand-holding and a lot of eye contact."

  • Awesome Eva Longoria

Matt Barnes and Gloria Govan broke up last week, and the NBA is locked out, freeing him up to potentially court Longoria. But she says it's not true. At all.

The 36-year-old Desperate Housewives star slammed the story on her Who Say account, "First Jessica Simpson, now this. Once again, press gets it wrong."

"Let me be very clear, Matt Barnes and I are not dating!"

Jessica Simpson is pregnant though. We got that right.

"We are doing a charity event together for Padres and Athletes vs. Cancer," Eva explained further. "Why is the truth never the headline? Why did I bother to comment when they put your statement at end of articles? #stillannoying."

The eternal question of the celebrity gossip age.

On the Terrell Owens 911 call released yesterday, the NFL star's assistant told the operator that she thought he had tried to commit suicide on October 6.

T.O.'s rep now says that's just untrue.

Diana Bianchini stated emphatically that "Terrell Owens absolutely did not attempt suicide nor did he attempt to overdose on pills on October 6, 2011."

T.O. Image

Of reports of a drug overdose, she says, "[T.O.'s assistant] arrived at his home that evening after he had already taken a sleeping aid to fall asleep."

"He was unresponsive because of this. Unaware he had taken a sleeping aid prior to her arrival, his assistant was concerned and decided to call 911."

"When the ambulance and police arrived, Owens was responsive and not held in the hospital. The reports released with the 911 call are misleading."

So, that's that. Probably. You never know with T.O., who has been accused of trying to leave this cruel world via painkiller overdose once before.
