Earlier this week, Torii Hunter took a leave of absence from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, citing "a personal matter" for his departure from the team.

And now we appear to know why.

As first reported by The Dallas Morning News and a local NBC affiliate, five students at Prosper High School in Texas were arrested yesterday in conjunction with the sexual assault of a student - and one of them has been identified as Darius McClinton-Hunter, the MLB veteran's son.

McClinton-Hunter, 17, has been released from jail on $15,000 bail.

"This is very tough for a father," Hunter Tweeted last night. "Thanks for ur prayers and support. Be Blessed everyone!"

A Divison I football prospect, the younger Hunter has received scholarship offers from Utah, West Virginia, Wake Forest and Texas Tech.

Not much is known about the incident in question, but Prosper, Texas Assistant Police Chief Gary McHone said of the basis for the arrests:

"There's a lot of information we're receiving to date in terms of the actual alleged offenses. That's still part of our ongoing investigation."

Boxing champion Manny Pacquiao is pointedly criticizing President Barack Obama's recent endorsement of gay marriage, calling it offensive to his religion.

In an interview, the religious Pacquiao said that Obama's view was nothing more than a direct attack on the morals of society and the will of God.

"God only expects man and woman to be together and to be legally married, only if they so are in love with each other," Manny Pacquiao said.

"It should not be of the same sex so as to adulterate the altar of matrimony, like in the days of Sodom and Gomorrah of old," he added, citing the Bible.

He described same-sex marriage as an "abomination" and went on to say that America should be the model of morality for other countries to emulate.

Recently voted Forbes' fourth most influential athlete, the World Boxing Organization welterweight champion is regarded by many as the best pound-for-pound boxer on the planet, and already has a burgeoning career out of the ring.

He is a member of the Philippines legislature, hosts a weekly TV game show and has his own vegetable business. Manny Pacquiao also hopes to become a leading Christian evangelist after having a religious "awakening."

Last week, Obama became the first U.S. president to publicly back gay marriage.

Many politicians, pundits and stars have weighed in - Jay-Z praised Obama Monday, while Bristol Palin ripped him last week - but members of the sporting community have been largely silent until Pacquiao's condemnation.

Your take: Same-sex marriage ...

Denver Nuggets center Chris "Birdman" Andersen has been "excused indefinitely" from the NBA team as officials investigate him for crimes against children.

Authorities searched Andersen's Larkspur, Colo., home Thursday morning and seized property. Andersen, 33, has not been arrested or charged with a crime.

"The Denver Nuggets are aware of media reports involving Chris Andersen. It involves a legal investigation and we await further details," team officials wrote.

The team declined further comment, as did Andersen, who has not played in the team's playoff series against the L.A. Lakers, which is now died at 3-3.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Deborah Sherman said the investigation is open but would not speak on the allegations against Andersen.

"It could include many different things. Right now we're not saying. They literally just got the property this morning," Sherman told reporters Thursday.

The spokesman went on to add, "The Sheriff's Office did contact Mr. Andersen this morning while he was at his house, and he cooperated fully."

With his colorful tattoos, hustle on the court and charitable endeavors, the reserve player has been a fan favorite in Denver area for years now.

Only 15 players in Major League Baseball history have ever turned an unassisted triple play. In 120 YEARS. Now a six-year-old has joined the club!

Due in large part to terrible base-running by his opponents, but still.

In a youth baseball game in Georgia, a soft line drive floated directly to shortstop Ross Bernath, who nabbed it cleanly, raced back to touch third base, then chased down the somehow-still-advancing runner from second. Score it 5, unassisted!

The only sad part? Ross' career may have just peaked.

Carl Beane, known to many baseball fans as "the voice of Fenway Park," died Wednesday in a single-vehicle crash after suffering a heart attack in Sturbridge, Mass.

He was 59.

Beane, a Massachusetts native, began his sports broadcasting career in 1972 at WMAS radio station in Springfield. He became the famed Fenway public address announcer in 2003 after winning a competition, the statement said.

Carl Beane

On his website, Beane touted the fact that he announced the first two games of the 2004 World Series and witnessed the Boston Red Sox claim the championship of Major League Baseball for the first time in 86 years.

"We are filled with sadness at this tragic news," Red Sox president Larry Lucchino said. "His legion of friends with the Red Sox and the media will miss him enormously, and all of Red Sox Nation will remember his presence, his warmth, and his voice."

“No one loved his role with the Red Sox more than Carl ... He adored the opportunity to contribute to the culture of Fenway Park, a place he loved passionately.”

Beane is survived by his wife, Lorraine; a daughter and two granddaughters.

"Rest in peace Carl Beane, God bless your soul. The voice of the Red Sox in Fenway. Carl Beane and Harry Kalas calling games on the ultimate field ... Heaven is blessed today," former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling said via Twitter.

A talented Tampa Bay Rays fan lunging over a railing for a foul ball turned an epic fail into a highlight worthy of SportsCenter the other night.

After FALLING OVER THE RAILING onto the field, flinging his beer and flipping his entire body upside down ... he managed to land on his feet.

Appreciative of this unintentionally amazing feat, the crowd roared, the fan bowed and the judges gave him a perfect 10 on the dismount:

We're not sure what's more incredible:

  1. This unreal catch by an Ultimate Frisbee player, who runs down a throw that appears to be 30 yards in front of him at one point, or ...
  2. That there is a sanctioned Ultimate Frisbee league of some kind that is televised and has good athletes! Learn something every day.

Anyway, watch in awe as Brent Anderson, who plays for something called the Connecticut Constitution, produces one of the sports highlights of the year:

Terrell Owens appeared on Dr. Phil yesterday with the three (of the four) women he has children with, and the TV personality eviscerated all of them.

Very politely, but still.

The ex-NFL great and the mothers of the kids he fathered (and say he doesn't pay child support for) hashed out their differences in front of a live audience.

And Dr. Phil. The erstwhile TV shrink started the show by going fairly easy on Owens, and never got flat-out harsh with the footballer. But the truth hurts.

Phil basically told Owens he's an irresponsible human being (which T.O. to his credit acknowledged) and needs to be the father he personally never had.

It was a sad and confusing display, made all the more so by Owens, now nearly broke and alone, recalling of his (lack of) relationship with his own father.

Not that Terrell's previous flings were spared by any means.

Dr. Phil gave them a verbal dressing down as well, accusing them of stonewalling T.O. out of spite and likely scarring their children for life as a result.

We never thought we'd say this about the TV spectacle, but maybe they all needed to hear it from someone ... and Phil certainly doesn't mince words.
