Vanessa Bryant may not be a gold-digging, domineering basketball wife ... but she gave a quote earlier this week that certainly came off that way.

Regarding husband Kobe Bryant, she told New York Magazine, "I certainly would not want to be married to somebody that can't win championships."

"If you're sacrificing time away from my family and myself for the benefit of winning championships, then winning a championship should happen every single year."

Yeah. Probably not the best word choice. Vanessa is now setting the record straight, clarifying to TMZ that she loves and supports Kobe, no matter what.

Kobe Bryant, Wife Vanessa Bryant

"I'm sad to hear that some of the comments in my New York Magazine interview are being misconstrued and taken out of context," says Vanessa Bryant.

"I have been with Kobe for 13 years. I accepted his marriage proposal PRIOR to him winning any of his 5 championships with his teammates."

"I have and will continue to support my husband’s dreams. For anyone to think otherwise is wrong. It is not about being married to a ‘winner.'"

"It is about our sacrifice as a family."

Kobe and Vanessa got engaged in 2000, the year he won his first NBA title, so you can't argue with her there, and she took him back after he allegedly cheated more than once. Basically you gotta cut the female Bryant some slack ... right?

In the wake of his shocking dismissal from the LSU football team last week, many pundits have been wondering: where will Tyrann Mathieu end up?

The answer, for now at least, is not at a rival collegiate power, however, but in a drug rehabilitation center.

According to WVUE-TV in New Orleans, Tyrone Mathieu says his adopted son (and one of last year's Heisman Trophy finalists), has been at the Right Step recovery center for days and is being counseled by former NBA player John Lucas.

The 20-year old Mathieu is reportedly committed to getting clean and is not giving any thought to transferring or agreeing to return to LSU in 2013 until his health is taken care of.

Known as "Honey Badger," Mathieu was given the boot from LSU's squad on August 10 for what a source told ESPN was a violation of the school's substance-abuse policy.

Just a few months ago, he won the Bednarik Award as the nation's best defensive player as a sophomore, also becoming the first defensive back to be a Heisman finalist since Charles Woodson in 1997.

In the past, such acts as Bon Jovi have taken on a similar role.

But let's look ahead to the future: Who do you think will be holding aloft the Vince Lombardi trophy next year?

It's been quite a week for Chad Johnson. To recap, the NFL star has been released by:

  1. The Miami Dolphins, who cut Chad on Hard Knocks no less.
  2. VH1, which sacked Ev & Ocho before it even premiered.
  3. Evelyn Lozada, who filed for divorce after 41 days of marriage.

An arrest for domestic violence is never good, but was it the nail in the coffin for the 34-year-old "Ochocinco" and his already declining career?

Ocho

Being charged with domestic violence for head-butting his wife means a serious legal issue hanging over his head as he searches for a new job.

Will an NFL team actually offer him one?

Clubs are increasingly focused on avoiding any individuals who have personal problems or who are distractions to the team, regardless of their talent.

Johnson's consistently outrageous antics, reality TV career and prolific oversharing on Twitter raised red flags long before last Saturday's events.

Combined with his inability or unwillingness to learn plays in New England last year, it may all be too much for him to overcome going forward.

What do you think? Is Chad's career done?

Were the Dolphins smart to cut him loose?

Hope Solo claims in her new memoir, Solo: A Memoir of Hope, that Maksim Chmerkovskiy slapped her across the face on Dancing With the Stars in 2011.

Maksim is reportedly adamant that this did NOT occur and shocked that the slap story somehow made it into the U.S. women's soccer team goaltender's book.

In it, she says Chmerkovskiy slapped her hard during a tense rehearsal while trying to put her head in the correct position for a dancing move. You buy it?

The two were partners who famously clashed on the show, but this was mostly attributed at the time to them each being intense competitors and athletes.

They've had dinner several times since the show, and she tweeted to Maks before the Olympics, offering him free tickets (Hope led the U.S. to gold, as usual).

Maks says he has no idea why Hope would publish such a false, defamatory statement and posted a statement on Twitter Thursday without naming names:

“Always hated hypocrites and liars… but when someone is both AND an opportunist, I just feel bad for them. Can’t win at someone’s expense,” he wrote.

Is it possible that she exaggerated an incident for her book just to make splashy headlines? Tell us what you think in the comments below.

Jenny McCarthy and Brian Urlacher have broken up.

The Playboy model and Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher kept a low profile during their relationship, but she confirmed the split herself today.

"Brian and I have decided to turn our romance into an amazing friendship," she said. "I will continue to be the biggest cheerleader for him. Go, Bears!"

McCarthy, 39, played coy when reporters questioned her about her relationship in April, around the time romance rumors with Urlacher, 34, first began.

She said simply, "I'm giddy about someone."

The following month, she acknowledged, "I can confirm that yes, it's true, we are dating," but would only continue with, "Go, Bears – that's all I'll say."

Here's wishing both the best in their future professional and romantic endeavors. Couple of good catches back on the market at least.

Well, unless you're a Packer fan. Even so, the much-hyped July-August Jenny McCarthy Playboy photos speak for themselves, right cheeseheads?

Kobe and Vanessa Bryant have reconciled, but she's made one thing clear: She does not want to be married to someone who doesn't win titles, plural.

Vanessa filed for divorce last winter after claiming that the couple's differences were irreconcilable, and amid rumors that Kobe was cheating on her.

The two eventually rekindled their union and appear to be on good terms now ... though it appears as if that means it's going to be on her terms.

Basically, the marriage don't mean a thing without a ring. An NBA championship ring, that is. Vanessa Bryant said, according to New York Magazine:

  • Kobe Bryant Photograph

"I certainly would not want to be married to somebody that can't win championships. If you're sacrificing time away from my family and myself for the benefit of winning championships, then winning a championship should happen every single year."

The Vanessa Bryant haters are likely to offer two comebacks:

  1. GOLD DIGGER!
  2. A strong work ethic, which Kobe is renowned for, will make him a terrific player, but it won't always win titles, especially not in the NBA.

Vanessa, of course, is raising two daughters full-time, and has been with Kobe since high school, long before there was any gold to be dug.

One wonders about her word choice, though. No one's making excuses for Kobe's past indiscretions, but winning titles is somewhat out of any one player's hands.

Kobe probably pushed very hard for the Dwight Howard trade. Knowing you're gonna sleep on the couch if shirtless clubbing photos get leaked is one thing. If L.A. being the #7 seed also lands you in the doghouse? That's motivation!

Nike, the official outfitter for the London Olympics, is taking some heat for one of its new t-shirts, emblazoned with the phrase "Gold Digging."

Clever, harmless play on words? Not in the eyes of everyone.

Since the shirt's only available for women, many fashion bloggers and Twitter believe it's sexist, that aparently only female Olympians are gold diggers.

Nike Gold Digging

On one hand, people seriously get offended way too easily about the smallest stuff. On the flip side, Nike could've come up with a more positive phrase.

"Golden Girl," "Reach for the Gold," "Go for the Gold," "Good as Gold" ... all of those get the point across, without implying you're out for a man's money.

You gotta give women respect. Considering that the U.S. women took won twice as many gold medals as the men in London, they certainly earned ours.

Still, it's just a t-shirt we're talking about. Is it really worth making this into an issue? Tell us: What do you think of this Nike "Gold Digging" shirt?

Melky Cabrera, the 2012 All-Star Game MVP and one of the best players in baseball this season, has failed a test for performance enhancing drugs and been suspended 50 games by Major League Baseball.

The San Francisco Giants outfielder registered high levels of testosterone - and didn't deny the reason behind it.

Melky

"My positive test was the result of my use of a substance I should not have used," Cabrera said in a statement released by the players' union. "I accept my suspension under the Joint Drug Program and I will try to move on with my life. I am deeply sorry for my mistake and I apologize to my teammates, to the San Francisco Giants organization and to the fans for letting them down."

In his first season as a Giant, Cabrera is batting .346 with 11 home runs and 60 RBI.

He will miss the remaining 45 games of the regular season and the first five of the postseason, if San Francisco qualifies. Otherwise, he will sit to start the 2013 season.

"We were extremely disappointed," the team said. "We fully support Major League Baseball's policy and its efforts to eliminate performance enhancing drugs from our game."

Amazingly, Chad Johnson's release by the Miami Dolphins in the wake of his arrest for domestic violence took place with cameras from HBO's Hard Knocks rolling.

The behind-the-scenes, ALL-access docu-series just happens to be focusing on the Dolphins this season, meaning Johnson's termination was caught on video.

Watch Johnson's ill-fated meeting with Head Coach Joe Philbin below:

A day after he was arrested for head-butting Evelyn Lozada and charged with domestic battery, Chad met with new coach Philbin in the coach's office.

Johnson pleaded that he'd never been in trouble before - actually true as a pro, though he had a prior domestic violence arrest in college in 2000.

In any case, Philbin wasn't having it and politely but unflinchingly made it clear he didn't see Chad going in the same direction as the organization.

In the ensuing days, he was also dropped by VH1, who canned the upcoming series Ev & Ocho, and by Lozada, who filed for divorce yesterday.

He essentially lost his day job, side job and wife in a 72-hour span, all over a receipt for condoms. Hope Beverly Shiner or side piece equivalent was worth it.
