Tennis great Serena Williams is in hot water over incendiary comments she made in Rolling Stone about the victim in the Steubenville, Oh., rape saga.

Williams came under fire this week after saying that "[the Steubenville rape victim] shouldn’t have put herself in that position" at a high school party.

Now Serena is issuing an apology, though she also appears to be deflecting responsibility and implying that she may not have ever made that remark.

"I am currently reaching out to the girl’s family to let her know that I am deeply sorry for what was written in the Rolling Stone article," Williams says.

"What was written - what I supposedly said - is insensitive and hurtful, and I by no means would say or insinuate that she was at all to blame."

So ... what she supposedly said was hurtful. What did she say?

Serena Williams celebrated her Olympic tennis gold medal Saturday with a seemingly harmless dance move, but its origins have some people criticizing the star.

In a brief homage to her hometown of Compton, Calif., the 30-year-old busted out an impromptu crip walk, a dance move once popularized by gang members.

Check out Serena Williams' crip walk dance below:

The move mostly passed by without incident, as Serena danced for about five seconds, and the crip walk dance dates back to her childhood, two decades ago.

Clearly, she was just having fun and basking in the Olympic moment, while perhaps giving a shout-out to the L.A.-area city of her humble beginnings.

Of all things to rip Serena Williams over, it's unclear how this even makes the list. Still, some critics act as if she crip walked all over Buckingham Palace.

Fox Sports wrote after the incident:

Serena Williams can add one more achievement to her Hall of Fame resume: Olympic champion.

The 14-time Grand Slam winner won a major tournament on the hallowed grounds of Wimbledon for the second time this summer, destroying top-ranked Maria Sharapova in the Gold Medal match by a score of 6-0, 6-1.

It was the most lopsided women's final in Olympic history.

Serena Williams at the Olympics

Williams lost only 17 games across six matches and let out a scream and even did a little dance upon taking the decisive point.

"I don't think I've ever danced like that," she said afterward. "I don't even know where the dance came from."

Serena now moves on to the doubles semifinals alongside sister Venus. It's been quite a year for the legendary star.

"I was so focused here," she said. "I remember I was serving and I was thinking: 'Serena, this is your best chance to win a gold medal. You're at Wimbledon, you're on grass, you play great on grass, pull it together, just win this.' And that's what I thought about."

Serena Williams may play tennis, but she won't have anything to do with love any time soon.

So the multiple-time Grand Slam champion told Celebuzz this week, saying past relationships - she's been the rumored gal pal of Common and Drake - left too hurtful of a scar.

Serena Williams at Work

Sounds like the only balls Serena Williams will be hitting in the near future will be on the court. (Sorry.)

“I have given up on dating. It just hasn’t worked out well for me... I just have to remove myself from that atmosphere for about the next decade or so," Serena said.

Williams was involved with Common, off and on, for three years. She then dated Drake until this January, splitting with him amidst seemingly bitter circumstances, considering at least one Tweet she posted soon afterward:

You suck, it read.

“I’m a really emotional person. I give my all and everything," Serena explained. "I do make mistakes - like every human does - but the last relationship just was too much of a heartbreak for me. I just can’t go through that anymore. It was hard.”

Serena Williams' outburst in the women's championship match was the talk of the U.S. Open Sunday, and the tennis star could dace further consequences yet.

Williams was docked a point early in the second set against Samantha Stosur - who won 6-2, 6-3 - after shouting "Come on!!!" as encouragement to herself.

That's typically standard, but because she yelled before the point was over, she was penalized ... and then LOST IT at the umpire for evoking the "hindrance rule."

Watch Williams' U.S. Open outburst here:

"If you ever see me walking down the hall, look the other way because you're out of control," Serena said. "You're a hater and you're unattractive inside."

It is worth noting that Williams, who infamously lost a match by virtue of a pair of code violations in her 2009 semifinal meltdown, did not use any profanity.

Nevertheless, she ranted to the point where a referee will pass along the findings of the investigation to the Tournament Grand Slam Committee.

That board will decide what discipline, if any, is appropriate. Fines are all but a given; Worst case is she could be banned from future tournaments.

Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal play for the men's title today at 4 p.m.

UPDATE: Officials just fined Serena $2,000 for the outburst, deeming that "Williams' conduct ... does not rise to the level of a major offense."

Evidently not. Her runner-up prize? $1.4 million. So that's that.

Lindsey Vonn is dominant on the slopes.

Serena Williams is among the best all-time on the hard court, clay and grass.

But we've found a surface on which both these athletes shine even brighter: the red carpet.

Vonn and Williams posed for photographers at last night's ESPY Awards in Los Angeles and neither held anything back, especially when it came to their cleavage. Wowza! Compare the beauties here and try to choose a winner, aside from every male on the planet, that is...

Serena Williams has been deemed too sexy for television.

A few days after a link to the tennis star's new 2K Sports video game commercial was Tweeted, the company received enough backlash over the spot - which features a scantily-clad Serena taking on a scantily-clad model - to announce it would not air on TV.

"As part of the process for creating marketing campaigns to support our titles, we pursue a variety of creative avenues," 2K Sports wrote in a statement. "This video is not part of the title's final marketing campaign and its distribution was unauthorized."

But it was clearly meant to hit the airways, as Serena Tweeted last week to be on the lookout for "awesomely sexy video."

And, come on, 2K Sports, billboards of Rafael Nadal shirtless are all over Europe.

What do you think? Should the ad have been pulled?

Tennis champion Serena Williams has been hospitalized in L.A. with a pulmonary embolism, a blood clot in the lungs. She suffered the health scare Monday.

Williams looked stunning at Sunday's Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party just hours before the unexpected condition surfaced.

Serena had been spotted at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in L.A. several times over the past week regarding the conditioned, but it worsened this week.
