Robert Bork, whose long political career was most noteworthy for his controversial rejection from the Supreme Court in the 1980s, has died at the age of 85.

Son Robert H. Bork Jr. confirmed his father died at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, Va. The son said Bork died from complications of heart ailments.


The brilliant, blunt Bork's confirmation hearings helped draw the modern boundaries of cultural fights over abortion, civil rights and other issues.

The Senate denied him confirmation and a spot on the court, 58-42.

U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye of Hawaii, the second-longest-serving senator in U.S. history and winner of the Medal of Honor for combat heroics in World War II, has died.

He was 88. "His last words were, 'Aloha,'" his office said.

Inouye died at Walter Reed Medical Center, with his wife, Irene, and his son, Ken, at his side. Last rites were performed by Senate Chaplain Dr. Barry Black.

A senator since 1963, Inouye in 2009 became chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, continuing a long record of funding projects in his home state.

Dina Manfredini, the world's oldest person and a resident of Iowa, has passed away. She was 115 years old.

A native of Italy, Manfredini died at Bishop Drumm Retirement Center, just two weeks after earning the title of World's Oldest Human after a 116-year old named Besse Cooper left this world on December 4.

Manfredini's granddaughter confirmed the passing, but would not elaborate on the cause of death.

It is now believed that Jiroemon Kimura of Japan - who was was born on April 19, 1897 - has taken over the title once held by Manfredini.

Ravi Shankar, a legendary Indian sitar player and songwriter who was a major influence on The Beatles, has passed away. He was 92.

Shankar's manager, Earl Blackburn, emailed with the sad news, confirming that the musician died at a hospital near his residence in California. He underwent heart-valve replacement surgery on Thursday.

Mexican-American singer Jenni Rivera was killed in a plane crash Sunday.

Authorities in Mexico have confirmed that the wreckage of the small plane, which went down shortly after takeoff, had been found in Nuevo Leon State.

There were no survivors; seven people were believed to be on board.

Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Josh Brent is facing a manslaughter charge after a one-vehicle accident that killed linebacker Jerry Brown, a member of the team's practice squad.

Irving, Tex., police spokesman John Argumaniz said the crash happened at 2:20 a.m. Saturday, just hours before Brent was to fly with the team to Cincinnati to face the Bengals.

The 25-year-old Jerry Brown - a practice-squad linebacker who also was Brent's teammate for three seasons at the University of Illinois - was pronounced dead at a hospital.

"I am devastated and filled with grief,'' Josh Brent said in a statement.

Jovan Belcher, a linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs, was at the center of a horrific tragedy this morning.

According to local authorities, Belcher, 25, shot and killed his on-again/off-again girlfriend (Kasandra Perkins, who gave birth to the couple's first child three months ago) in her home around 8 a.m. and then drove to the Arrowhead Stadium complex where the Chiefs play home games.

In front of team personnel (including GM Scott Piloi and Coach Romeo Crennel) who tried to calm him down in the parking lot, Belcher then shot himself in the head.

Police spokesman Darin Snapp says authorities received a 911 call from the mother of Belcher's victim, alerting them to the incident at her daughter's residence.

Zig Ziglar, a motivational speaker who wrote more than 30 books on living a balanced life, and who built a huge following over his long life, has died in Texas.

He was 86. Ziglar, who had been suffering from pneumonia, passed away Wednesday at a hospital in the Dallas suburb of Plano, said his assistant, Jay Hellwig.

With an aim at helping people achieve success in both their careers and personal lives, in addition to a focus on Christianity, Ziglar was a prolific speaker.

He appeared at events alongside world leaders over the years, including several U.S. presidents and former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
