Louis Zamperini, a World War II hero about whom Angelina Jolie recently made a movie, died last night at his home in Hollywood.

He was 97 years old.

A statement released by Universal Pictures on Thursday morning included a message from Zamperini’s family. It reads:

"Having overcome insurmountable odds at every turn in his life, Olympic runner and World War II hero Louis Zamperini has never broken down from a challenge. He recently faced the greatest challenge of his life with a life-threatening case of pneumonia.

"After a 40-day long battle for his life, he peacefully passed away in the presence of his entire family, leaving behind a legacy that has touched so many lives. His indomitable courage and fighting spirit were never more apparent than in these last days."

Meshach Taylor, an actor best known for his role on the long-running 1980s comedy Designing Women, died yesterday after a battle with cancer. 

He was 67 years old.

According to Taylor’s loved ones, the star passed away inside his California home while surrounded by loved ones.

He had grown gravely ill in recent days, with his family writing on Facebook on June 27:

"It is with love and gratitude that we sorrowfully announce that our darling, amazingly brilliant and dynamic, Meshach, the incredible father, husband, son and friend has begun his grand transition."

Bobby Womack, a legendary and beloved R&B singer, died on Friday evening, his publicist has confirmed.

The artist was 70 years old.

No other details have been provided at this time, but the music world is in mourning over a man best known for tracks such as "Across 110th Street," If You Think You're Lonely Now" and "I Wish He Didn't Trust Me So Much."

Eli Wallach, a gravelly voiced, veteran character actor who appeared in countless films alongside the biggest stars around for decades, has died.

He was 98 years old.

Wallach co-starred with Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe in The Misfits, Clint Eastwood in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Al Pacino in The Godfather: Part III.

After two years of Army service during WWII, Wallach debuted on Broadway in 1945 and won a Tony Award for Tennessee Williams's 1951 The Rose Tattoo.

Williams also wrote the script for Wallach's movie debut, the 1956 Baby Doll, costarring Carroll Baker and Karl Malden and directed by Elia Kazan.

Oddly, Wallach often played Mexican bandits in movies, most memorably in 1960's The Magnificent Seven, taking on Steve McQueen and Yul Brynner.

Frostie the Snow Goat, an inspiring animal mostly confined to a wheelchair due to a disease known as joint navel ill, passed away yesterday at his sanctuary in Australia.

In a blog published Tuesday, Edgar's Mission (the nonprofit that rescued Frostie) wrote that the goat fell ill early Monday morning and died soon after.

He had just recently graduated from his wheelchair, as seen in the GIF below of Frostie jumping around happily:

"Frostie’s spinal column was riddled with abscesses that refused to acknowledge the strength and determination of the arsenal of antibiotics and medications that had been sent in to do battle,” wrote Edgar’s Mission.

Caleb Bankston, a contestant on the "Blood vs. Water" edition of Survivor, was killed on Tuesday when the train he was riding in Alabama derailed and crashed.

He was 26 years old.

Bankston worked at the Alabama Warrior Railway in Birmingham and finished in ninth place on the CBS competition last year; he competed alongside his fiancé, Colton Cumbie.

Katie Cleary, who became famous as one of the models on Deal Or No Deal, was recently spotted in Cannes with the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio and Adrian Grenier.

The one person absent in the pictures of her party hopping in the South of France was her husband, who according to reports, committed suicide last weekend.

In the wake of the questionable snapshots surfacing in the press, Andrew Stern, 40, shot himself on Sunday at a shooting range in the San Fernando Valley.

Reports indicate the businessman and his wife, who has appeared in bit roles on Entourage and Chuck, were having marital issues and headed toward divorce.

That may have contributed to his stress, although sources report that he was reportedly also struggling financially and suffered from a history of depression.

The 32-year-old model issued a statement in the aftermath of the tragedy.

Demi Lovato is in mourning today.

The singer, who posted a number of fun selfies earlier in the week, took to Instagram for a very different reason this afternoon: the memory of her father.

Patrick Lovato died of cancer on June 20, 2013.

"Can’t believe it’s already been a year.. Wish I could’ve hugged you one last time.. RIP Daddy, I love you," Lovato wrote as a caption to the following image.

Soon after this tragic event, Lovato started a mental illness scholarship fund in her dad's honor.

Frank Giudice, the father of Real Housewives of New Jersey star Joe Giudice, died suddenly in the backyard of his son's home this afternoon.

He was 63 years old.

According to TMZ, Frank had no history of health problems when he keeled over while building a chicken coop in his son and daughter-in-law's garden.

Joe and Teresa Giudice believe Frank suffered a massive heart attack, as he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both halves of the famous couple, meanwhile, are facing many years of prison time on charges of mortgage and financial fraud.

Regardless of your feelings about Miley Cyrus' revealing selfies or celebrity feuds, the following story is sure to leave you with admiration for the controversial pop star's love for her fans.

Caley Camarillo was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at a young age. She had been a fan of Miley's since her Hannah Montana days and her parents were able to arrange for her to meet Miley during the early stages of her illness.

Sadly, Caley passed away this week at the age  of 12. Fortunately, Miley was able to play a heartwarming role in the young girl's final moments.
