The residents of Newtown, Connecticut were greeted this week by a group of furry friends.
About 10 golden retrievers from the Chicago area Saturday, as Lutheran Church Charities in that city thought the canines could provide some level of comfort for those affected by last week's horrendous shooting.
"Dogs are nonjudgmental. They are loving. They are accepting of anyone," said Tim Hetzner, the organization’s president. "It creates the atmosphere for people to share."
The dogs attended the interfaith gathering on Sunday night and listened to the President Obama Newtown speech, as community members spent time with the animals in silence.
Yesterday, they stopped by local schools and befriended children still trying to process all that went down last Thursday.

The driving dogs program was created by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Auckland, with the goal of establishing that dogs are smart creatures.

Kim Kardashian's Persian kitten, Mercy, has died, the reality star has confirmed.
The cause of her cat's death was a cancer-like virus associated with breeding.
"It is with deep sadness that I have to tell you all that my kitten, Mercy has passed away," Kim wrote on her blog Friday evening. "My heart is completely broken."
