We are fewer than two weeks away from the release of Catching Fire.

How are you preparing for this opening? By re-watching the original? By viewing the Catching Fire trailer 27 times per day? By entering into a competition with your friends in which only one person comes out alive?

We really don't recommend the latter.

But we do recommend the following: it's a video of cats recreating The Hunger Games by using cardboard. What else do you need to know?!?

Forget Katniss for a moment, people, and focus below on CAT-niss:

This jumping cat in Japan has taken the Internet by storm, and it's not hard to see why. One look at is unreal vertical leap shows that he's just ... unreal.

Not only does Nya-Suke leap what has to be six feet off the ground without a running start, he has the shot-blocking form. NBA scouts, are you watching?

REJECTED!

Jumping Cat

Nya-Suke, better known as "Jumping Cat," has been making waves on YouTube for a year, but is going viral this week thanks to Kotaku's Brian Ashcraft.

"Have you seen this guy jump? Holy smoke, he's incredible," Ashcraft wrote, stating the obvious while describing just how exceptional this little fella is.

While "the average cat can jump about five times their height, which is typically about 150 cm or 4.9 feet," Nya-Suke can jump as high as 196 cm, or 6.4 feet.

He can do more than that, too. His skill set may also make NFL scouts salivate. Watch him catch a ball in mid-air like a pro wide receiver below ...

This photo ought to make your week.

The Austin Fire Department has been unfortunately very busy over the last few days, coming to the aid of those affected by massive flooding in the area.

With over 15 inches of rain falling on Central Texas, entire neighborhoods have been evacuated and rescue workers have been on the scene around the clock.

But it's not just those with two legs who need assistance, as photographer Preston Culver captured a heartwarming moment between firefighters Matt Harvey and Michael Cooper yesterday.

Check out their admirable effort below in pulling a canine to safety:

Fireman Rescues Dog

This lucky pooch wasn't the only furry friends to be saved by generous human beings over the past few weeks.

Feel better about humanity via this story about an abandoned dog nursed back to health and this tale of a pit bull being rescued from a sewer.

Lady Gaga is in mourning this week after losing a loved one near and dear to her heart: Beloved childhood dog Alice, who passed away at the age of 17.

On Tuesday, October 29, the 27-year-old pop star confirmed the death on Twitter, explaining, "We had to put her down, cancer ate away at a little angel."

"My daddy is so sad," she Tweeted, "we all are, lost a member of our family."

"I love being an entertainer but it is so painful sometimes to be away from home ... 17 years she held on, so many memories. Nothing beats family."

"I remember her laying my bed, she knew when I was sad, or when I was sick ... I should have been there. I just pray that Alice found her wonderland."

Today, October 29, is National Cat Day 2013. Or as those of us who spend any time online call it, Tuesday. We kid ... mostly. This is an actual thing today.

What day isn't National Cat Day, though? Do we really need a designated event to bow down to our adorable feline friends who rule the world wide web?

No, but if it helps encourage their adoption, we're all for it.

The event was first started in 2005, and this year organizers are hoping to find 10,000 shelter animals new homes. So really, what are you waiting for?

If you're looking for a furry companion and ready for the responsibility, check out your local shelter or head over to the ASPCA adoption site or Petfinder.com.

Not convinced? Looking for us to make the case for you and kill some more time at work/school? Check out some of our other favorite cat pics and videos ...

A couple of morons went to a Halloween party this week dressed as Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman. It was clearly the most offensive thing ever.

So, to make us feel better about life, we've posted a vide of the cutest thing ever. No, not babies laughing at dogs. Although that's a very close second.

In the following video, a kitten is fascinated by a dog's wagging tail, as it continually moves back and forth at fast speed and the feline can't get enough of this friendly action.

The dog seems okay with it, too, much to the happiness of the owner/camerawoman. It's adorable stuff. We've watched the footage 12 times today already:

Like the story of an abused pit bull rescued by a concerned citizen, we have a new uplifting dog tale to share with readers.

Earlier this fall, an extraordinarily shaggy canine was found by Brenda Gough's husband near the family's farm in Ontario. It was so scared and so heavily matted that the poor creature could barely walk.

So Gough quickly brought the pooch to the Park Road Veterinary Clinic where she works.

Once there, the dog was named Shrek ("out of endearment," the clinic wrote on Facebook. "The irony of him being found near a pond... how he will go from shy and afraid to loved and comforted with a family.") and he was given a massive makeover.

In devastating news, a squirrel recently dropped his nut from atop a telephone pole when tragedy struck and a slight misstep sent his breakfast tumbling down.

Incredibly, a photographer was there to document his stunned reaction:

Poor Squirrel

To answer the obligatory question: Yes. This is somehow a real photo.

Ajeet Vikram, the photographer, said that the poor critter had just finished scurrying up the pole with his bounty at the moment of devastation - and disbelief.

The 27-year-old from India set out to take photos of the sunrise that day, but happened to zero in on the squirrel and capture his expression of abject terror.

Giant George, a loyal friend and canine companion who lived up to his nickname, but nevertheless was as gentle as giants go, has passed away.

The world's tallest dog was a month shy of his eighth birthday.

World's Largest Dog

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, George's staggering height of 43 inches eclipsed that of all other dogs. In human terms, that's 3'7"!

George towered above most living things he came into contact with, but was a very good dog who never hurt a thing. His owners and the public adored him.

He was surrounded by loved ones at the time of his passing.

R.I.P., Giant George. R.I.P.

A Wisconsin pug is channeling Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" video in honor of Halloween, as evidenced by this great photo shared by his owner, McKenna.

Here's a helpful side-by-side comparison ...

  • Pug Dressed as Wrecking Ball
  • Miley Cyrus Nude, Wrecking Ball Style

McKenna's cousin, Karin Morrison (a.k.a. The Craftinomicon), posted DIY instructions on her blog for how to make this costume for your own pet:

  • 1 old Barbie doll
  • Polyester fiberfil
  • 1/2-1 yard dark grey fabric (depending on dog size)
  • Scissors
  • Needle and thread
  • Length of chain
  • A dog that is fine with wearing awesome costumes

File this under Epic Win for McKenna and patient canine companion Tottie, then check out some of our other favorite "Wrecking Ball" parodies below ...
