A jury acquitted Nancy Kerrigan’s brother, Mark Kerrigan, of manslaughter in the death of their father, according to news reports Wednesday.

While Mark was acquitted of manslaughter, he was convicted of a second charge of assault and battery related to the January 2010 incident.

The death of his 70-year-old father, Daniel, took place in the family's home in Stoneham, Mass., and Mark was charged shortly afterward.

Olympian Nancy Kerrigan and her mother Brenda have been in the court each day and have supported Mark Kerrigan throughout the trial.

Brenda testified that the fight between Mark and Daniel lasted only a few seconds and that she saw them in a "bear hug", nothing more.

She never saw Mark put his hands around his father's neck, she said, making it unlikely he directly caused his father's fatal heart attack.

The prosecutor countered to jurors that Mark Kerrigan, was an "angry, mean, nasty, drunk son" who killed his father in the fight.

Former Olympian Nancy Kerrigan is speaking out for the first time since the death of her father Daniel. Her brother Mark is being charged, and she's not happy.

Kerrigan called her late father "her safety net'' and does not believe her brother should face criminal charges for his alleged role in 70-year-old Daniel's death.

"He was someone who took an interest in everyone that he came in contact with and, if he knew you much at all, had an endearing wisecrack that would be sure to make you laugh,'' she said of her father. "For me, he was my safety net."

In a letter, released by her spokeswoman, Kerrigan said her family supports her brother, Mark Kerrigan, whom authorities allege fought with their father inside their Stoneham, Mass., home last month, possibly contributing to his father's death.

On Tuesday, Middlesex District Attorney Gerard T. Leone Jr.'s office said the medical examiner's office had concluded Daniel Kerrigan's death was a homicide resulting directly from a fight with the son coupled with a pre-existing cardiac condition.

Leone has not decided whether to upgrade charges against the son, who has pleaded not guilty to assault and battery with a dangerous weapon charges.

But Nancy Kerrigan made her views clear.

"It has been a sad moment for us all,'' Kerrigan wrote. "And it isn't over yet, particularly with the ruling this week about the cause of my dad's death; a ruling by the way which we think was unjustified and which we plan to help my brother fight.''

Separately, Mark Kerrigan's defense attorney said that Daniel Kerrigan's death may turn out to be an accident that would not merit a criminal charge at all.

Mark Kerrigan, who has mental health issues, has also been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder due to Army service, his attorney said in court.

Nancy Kerrigan's father's death late last month has been ruled a homicide, according to the Middlesex County (Mass.) Chief Medical Examiner.

According to the findings, Daniel Kerrigan died from cardiac dysrhythmia after suffering a neck injury during a physical altercation at his home.

The Coroner reports that the 70-year-old Daniel suffered a cartilage fracture to the larynx area, which was exacerbated by heart disease.

As we previously reported, Nancy's brother Mark Kerrigan faces one charge of assault and battery on an elder with serious bodily injury.

The investigation continues, with no word on whether prosecutors will now up the charges against Mark, but the family is displeased with the coroner's report.

The family lawyer, Tracy Miner, says "The Kerrigan family is extremely disappointed that the medical examiner would release a cause of death without having all of the relevant facts. We believe this finding to be premature and inaccurate."

The Kerrigans are also standing by Mark Kerrigan - who was arrested and charged with assault and battery after - saying, "The Kerrigan family does not blame anyone for the unfortunate death of Dan Kerrigan, who had a pre-existing heart condition."

Mark Kerrigan, brother of former figure skating champion Nancy Kerrigan, allegedly assaulted their father and thus caused the heart attack that killed him this week.

Now the Olympic medalist's sibling won't be allowed to attend the funeral, the Boston Herald reports, per the Massachusetts department of correction guidelines.

Daniel Kerrigan will be laid to rest today.

In the meantime, Mark Kerrigan, 45, who is clearly a very troubled individual, has been transferred to Bridgewater State Hospital for a competency evaluation.

This isn't Mark Kerrigan's first brush with the law - or violence.

During Mark's 2007 divorce from now-ex-wife Janet Guarino, the judgment wasn't exactly glowing. They divorced on the grounds of cruel and abusive treatment.

According to the Herald, Guarino took out multiple restraining orders against Mark Kerrigan, both when they were married and while they were still dating.

Se told authorities he "punched her, slashed her tires, threatened her with a bow and arrow, trashed her personal property and sent ex-cons to visit her."

Makes Tonya Harding seem downright angelic.

Some of you may not recall the infamous run-up to the 1994 Olympics, during which Tonya Harding's ex-husband hired a hit man to club her chief figure skating rival, Nancy Kerrigan, in the knee to better Tonya's odds at the U.S. trials.

Well, that happened. So we can't exactly say we were expecting Harding of all people to speak out and offer Kerrigan sympathy in the aftermath of her father's death.

Daniel Kerrigan died at the age of 70. Nancy's 45-year-old brother, Mark Kerrigan, was arrested for assault and battery on an elder resulting in serious bodily injury.

Despite their adversarial past, Tonya Harding offered support to Nancy.

Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding go way back. Not in a good way.

"Tonya feels very sad for Nancy and her family and extends her deepest sympathy and condolences to them," her rep said in a statement to The Insider.

"Tonya's beloved dad, Al Harding, passed away this past April, so she understands the grief Nancy and her family are feeling at this difficult time."

We wouldn't hold our breath waiting for a reply if we were her, but that classy statement to her skating counterpart does accomplish this much:

It was less insane than when Tonya took on Barack Obama. Goodness.

Despite the tragic death of her father Daniel, Nancy Kerrigan is still showing the class and courtesy for which she is known throughout the skating world.

"She is really struggling," said 1992 Olympic silver medalist Paul Wylie, who checked up on his former teammate. "But she called to thank me for calling."

Kristi Yamaguchi, who also competed with Kerrigan, offered condolences by text, and Kerrigan responded, "Thank you, I really appreciate all the support."

Authorities charged Nancy's brother, Mark Kerrigan, with assaulting his father who died in an altercation at the family's Massachusetts home January 24.

A cause of death has not been determined, but Daniel Kerrigan's wife, Brenda, tells the Boston Herald he may have suffered a heart attack.

Nancy Kerrigan competed at the 1992 and 1994 Olympics.

At a Monday arraignment in the Boston suburb of Woburn, Mark Kerrigan pleaded not guilty to the charges against him and was held on $10,000 bail.

"I am so saddened for Nancy," Yamaguchi, also winner of ABC's Dancing With the Stars' sixth season, "My heart goes out to Nancy and her family."

"Nancy is part of our family and the loss of a parent is devastating. I always smile when I think of Dan because he was a lot of fun and he had such pride for his daughter and her accomplishments. That meant a lot to Nancy."

Mark Kerrigan "appeared intoxicated" and had to be pepper sprayed by cops after the alleged altercation, according to the Stoneham Police Department.

He "became belligerent and combative" and police say Mark admitted he put his hands around his father's neck and at first thought his dad was faking it.

His attorney lawyer said that Mark Kerrigan suffers from post traumatic stress disorder from his stint in the Army, and has been living in his parent's basement after spending time in jail for assault and battery related charges.
