“This has got to be the largest collection of old English musicians ever assembled in Madison Square Garden,” he said of the star-studded benefit show.

“But I’ve got to say, if it rains in London, you’ve got to come and help us, OK?”

On the road doing press for On the Road, Stewart made a surprise appearance in New York to make a plea for donations to the ongoing relief efforts.

"She flew in from California just to be here tonight because she wanted to help out," Master of Ceremonies Billy Crystal told the sellout crowd Wednesday.

Britney Spears' earnings edged Taylor Swift's to make her the top-earning woman in music over the past year by a whisker - and not strictly due to album sales.

Records, her X Factor gig, endorsements and a perfume line netted Britney Spears $58 million last year; Taylor was a close second with an estimated $57 million.

Britney Spears X Factor

A contract with CoverGirl cosmetics, her own line of fragrances, countless hit songs and massive celebrity gossip attention made 2012 Swift's year.

Rihanna earned an estimated $53 million to put her at No. 3, two spots up from last year, followed by Lady Gaga, who fell from No. 1 in 2011 with $52 million.

New Jersey's #1 ambassador (with apologies to Chris Christie, who would probably agree with us), Bruce Springsteen, rocked the 12-12-12 Concert for Sandy Relief last night.

The Boss kicked off the four-and-a-half-hour-plus show - which also featured a Nirvana reunion - with "Land of Hope and Dreams," "Wrecking Ball" and "City of Ruins."

"For 25 years, if you go to Asbury [Park] in the summer, and there was no one on its beaches, no one on its boardwalk," Springsteen said in introducing "City of Ruins."

"Then, over the past decade, thanks to an arts community, thanks to the gay community, thanks to people who lived there and toughed it out, the town has had a renaissance."

Paul McCartney helped stage a Nirvana reunion last night in NYC.

During the 12-12-12 concert to benefit Hurricane Sandy relief efforts in the region, McCartney recalled how "recently some guys asked me to jam with them."

Those guys turned out to be Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic.

"The penny finally dropped that I was in the middle of a Nirvana reunion" he said before Nirvana's first-ever live performance of "Cut Me Some Slack" with Paul on vocals.

Watch their performance below!

Courtney Love, of course, was not a fan of McCartney standing in for Kurt Cobain ... although she said, "if it were John [Lennon] it would have been cool."

Come on. It's still kind of cool.
