Katy Perry was one of the big MTV VMA winners last night - perhaps the biggest winner of all, taking home Video of the Year honors for "Firework."

On the one hand, it seems a dubious call by MTV, given the talent she was competing against. On the flip side, the show are all arbitrary anyway.

Also, perhaps it's not ridiculous to give a big award to an artist who achieved a feat only Michael Jackson had before with five #1 hits on one album.

What do you think? Was "Firework" Video of the Year worthy? Vote:

Did Katy Perry's "Firework" deserve to win at the VMAs?

Cobra Starship performed its hit “You Make Me Feel ... ” on the MTV Video Music Awards pre-show Sunday night. With the group was a special guest.

Singer and Britney Spears gal-pal Sabi started off the song riding down an escalator in a white blazer, ripped-up silver pants and red leather gloves.

"Cobra Starship and Sabi. How cool was that?" exclaimed pre-show host Selena Gomez, following her discussion of Justin Bieber's "snake" earlier.

Do you agree with Selena's take? Watch and see ...

Seriously, some people suck.

Just a few months after she was released from a stint in rehab, largely due to an eating disorder, Demi Lovato walked the red carpet of the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, as seen here:

Looking fabulous, Demi Lovato!

She looked great at the event, right? Not according to some idiotic Twitter followers.

Dressed in a white formal suit, the performer gyrated to "Yeah 3X," then further showcased his moves to the 1993 Wu-Tang classic "Protect Ya Neck."

His routine then moved even further back in time with a surprise dance number to Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Anybody see that one coming?

First, Beyonce showed off her baby bump. Then, she took to the stage at the VMAs last night and showed off her unmatched talent.

The singer belted out a version of "Love on Top," highlighted by a repetition of the chorus to close the number and then a pregnant pose by the artist. Cut to backstage, where Kanye West congratulated Jay-Z as the crowd went wild and we had a legitimately touching few moments.

Once again, congratulations to this couple. Sit back and watch an expecting Beyonce in action now:

There were crazy outfits, alternate personalities, curse-filled acceptance speeches and a lot more at the MTV Video Music Awards.

But, sometimes, it's all about the voice. Enter Adele.

The British sensation took home three trophies at the event, as well as non-stop praise from the country's leading artists. Said Lady Gaga during the pre-show: “She’s a breath of fresh air and she’s so exciting and her music is adding another dimension to radio that’s so important. She’s [also] a truly lovely person - which, to me, is always my favorite.”

Watch Adele sing "Someone Like You" at the VMAs now:

It was billed as a surprise performance, but word leaked out well ahead of time.

Still, the crowd went crazy at last night's MTV Video Music Awards when Kanye West and new father-to-be (!!!!!!!!!!) Jay-Z took to the stage for a rendition of "Otis." Off their mega-hit album "Watch the Throne," the single features each artist doing his talented thing.

Watch for yourself:

"I wanna ***** thank everyone *****. I've been dreaming about this **** since I was 9! I just wanna ***! I can't *** & ****." - Tyler, The Creator.

Tyler The Creator was among the MTV VMA winners Sunday, but a slam of Bruno Mars and expletive-laden acceptance speech drew more buzz.

Fortunately, he won't be killing himself. We think.

During the pre-show, when Tyler realized he was at the bottom of MTV's Tweet Tracker and Bruno Mars was up top, he told MTV host Sway that Mars' music "sucked" and if he lost the Best New Artist award to Mars, "I might kill myself."

He did not. Tyler The Creator won for "Yonkers" (below). Did he deserve it?

In addition to winning Best Pop Music Video for "Till the World Ends" at the MTV Video Music Awards last night, Britney Spears was recognized by the event.

The singer was given the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award for her life's influence on music videos, with a two-minute dance tribute performed in her honor.

None other than Lady Gaga-Jo Calderone presented the award:

Upon winning Best Pop Music Video, she took the stage and could not help getting a little choked up discussing her family and beau Jason Trawick!

"Thank you so much," Britney Spears gushed. "I wasn't expecting this!"

"First I'd like to thank God, for blessing me so much. And my beautiful family - my two boys, Jayden and Preston, Mommy loves you so much. My management team... And to all my fans! And to Jason ... I love you!"

Aww. She was pretty emotional. Check it out after the jump:

Little Monsters already know Jo Calderone is Lady Gaga's alter ego. What they didn't know before last night's Video Music Awards is that the two were an item!

"My name is Jo Calderone," the 25-year-old said, showing up in drag as part of her wild, extended pre-performance monologue. "Lady Gaga? She left me!"

Fully committed to the character for several minutes, smoking a cigarette as he/she addressing the crowd, "Jo" grew more and more animated ...

"[Lady Gaga] is f**king crazy!" he/she said. "For example, she gets out of the bed, puts on the heels. She comes out of the bathroom dripping wet and she's still got the heels on ... And what's with the hair?

"At first it was sexy, but now I'm just confused. I think it's really f**king great that she's such a star and all ... but how am I supposed to shine?"

There you go. Finally, Lady Gaga sat down and belted out a soulful rendition of "You and I." Brian May from Queen came on stage and joined her.

What did you think of her performance? Was it great to see Jo Calderone in person like that, or did the gag get old? Certainly original, right?
