Despite less than stellar Thor: The Dark World reviews, the latest blockbuster from Marvel lived up to the hype and expectations this weekend, taking a hammer to all box office competition.

The Chris Hemsworth film pulled in $86.1 million on Friday and Saturday.

This figure is over $20 million above what the original earned in May of 2011 and placed it well (well, well, well) ahead of number-two finishes Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa.

Lionsgate has given us a fresh look at Catching Fire.

With just two weeks to go until the release of this blockbuster, the following clip features Jennifer Lawrence's heroine and Woody Harrelson's Haymitch.

The former is a mess, telling her mentor that she never meant for anyone to get killed and President Snow has to know that and stop worrying about a rebellion in the districts and, please, just help her get through this!

“This trip? Girl wake up,” snaps Haymitch. “This trip doesn’t end when you get back home. You never get off this train! From now on, your job is to be distraction so people forget what the real problems are."

Catching Fire opens on November 22 and here is another clip from The Hunger Games sequel to whet your appetite for action.

The Thor: The Dark World reviews are in - and they aren't spectacular.

But Jimmy Kimmel has an idea for what would make this movie more appealing to women and likely to critics as well: market it as a love story!

Forget centering the tale on Chris Hemsworth's iconic superhero. There are plenty of those around Hollywood.

Instead, shift the focus to Natalie Portman's character and her search for love and how it overcomes all obstacles... and just watch this hilarious trailer to see what we mean:

The critics' Thor: The Dark World reviews were mixed, but no one will dispute that this is hilarious: A Chinese theater used a fan-made poster to promote the film.

A mistake? A clever guerilla, viral marketing effort? Either way, it's great.

The critics do love Loki. Maybe Thor does too, more than we thought.

The artwork in question shows Thor (Chris Hemsworth) clutching the villainous Loki (Tom Hiddleston) in a loving embrace, which he clearly doesn't do.

The actual poster, which inspired the parody, shows the hammer-wielding hero pulling the same move on girlfriend Jane (Natalie Portman), instead.

Check out both after the jump ...

Thor: The Dark World his U.S. theaters this weekend after a monstrous opening abroad, and for what it's worth, the sequel to 2011's Thor meets expectations.

Does the Alan Taylor-directed flick exceed them, though? Can he make the hammer-wielding hero played by Chris Hemsworth any more compelling?

The big-budgent Marvel movie has earned a few jabs from critics for its reliance on CGI and for being dull, while others are more than pleased with it.

Should you check it out, or save it for a rental someday?

Here's a sampling of Thor: The Dark World reviews ...

"Thor: The Dark World may not be thunder from the movie gods, but it is - shock! - an entertaining journey into mystery, action and fun. It cruises where the earlier film lumbered. It has its faults, but this is solidly in the upper sphere of superhero sequels." - N.Y. Daily News
