Melissa McCarthy is at the center of another weighty debate.

The actress was slammed as a "tractor-sized hippo" by an obnoxious movie critic during his review of Identity Theft earlier this year; and controversy later swirled around posters for The Heat that appeared to Photoshop away her curvy figure.

Now, McCarthy is one of several famous women featured in Elle's "Woman in Hollywood" issue, but many critics are wondering why she's posing on the cover in a coat that covers her body.

Is the magazine trying to hide her voluptuous figure?

In an interview with The New York Times, Melissa McCarthy finally addresses New York Observer critic Red Reed, who blasted her as a "tractor-sized hippo" when reviewing Identity Thief in February.

Was she affected by the insult? At first, McCarthy said, yes. She was taken aback.

But "I felt really bad for someone who is swimming in so much hate," the actress said. "I just thought, that's someone who's in a really bad spot, and I am in such a happy spot. I laugh my head off every day with my husband and my kids who are mooning me and singing me songs."

Being photoshopped in Hollywood is not exactly something new.

Or something abhorrent in and of itself, with Jennifer Lawrence on record as loving the computerized beauty edits.

But a couple British movie posters for The Heat are coming under fire not just because star Melissa McCarthy is clearly photoshopped... but because she's photoshopped to look much thinner. See for yourself:

The Heat Poster

“Nobody is unclear [about] what Melissa McCarthy's body size is -- she's plus-sized and proud. So why have the designers of this poster done their utmost to Photoshop a good 30 lbs off of McCarthy's face?” wrote British entertainment blog The Shiznit.

She fell during her monologue. Multiple times.

She pretended to try out for The Voice.

She failed as Vanna White and she mocked the Mike Rice scandal as Rutgers.

Indeed, Melissa McCarthy hosted Saturday Night Live for the second time this weekend, taking on a number of characters and making an early bid to be the next member of the Five-Timers Club.

Rex Reed of The New York Observer made his feelings very clear this week in an Identity Theft review: the critic is not a fan of the comedy.

That's perfectly reasonable, of course, but Reed is receiving major backlash at the moment due to his personal attack against actress Melissa McCarthy.

In his critique, Reed refers to the star as a "female hippo," adding that she is "cacophonous" and tractor-sized."

"Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids) is a gimmick comedian who has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious with equal success," writes Reed. "Poor Jason Bateman. How did an actor so charming, talented, attractive and versatile get stuck in so much dreck?"

Ouch. Damn. Are these fair criticisms for a movie critic to make? You tell us: Referring to McCarthy's weight is...

Ashlee Simpson was there too! As you can see, Jessica's little sis is sporting short hair and a rail-thin frame these days. In a nice dress, sure, but she's looked better.

Contrast her with Melissa McCarthy, whose Bridesmaids quotes and Mike & Molly quotes leave us in stitches - and who proves you can be plus-sized and fashionable!

Known for her hilarious Bridesmaids quotes and her starring role on Mike & Molly, actress Melissa McCarthy is living proof that you don't have to be plastered across gossip sites in bikini photos to be laugh-out-loud funny.

Plus-size women can feel like stars, too.

After co-designing her Emmys dress with dressmaker Daniella Pearl, the 41-year-old - who combed through "9 million dresses with taffeta or shiny bows" - decided to create a clothing line for women with similar body types.

"Trying to find stuff that's still fashion-forward in my size is damn near impossible," she tells The Hollywood Reporter. "It's either for like a 98-year-old woman or a 14-year-old hooker, and there is nothing in the middle."

It wasn't until McCarthy became a mom to daughters Vivian, 4, and Georgette, 1, that she stopped feeling insecure about her physical appearance.
