Mary Richardson Kennedy, the estranged wife of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was remembered for her generosity of spirit by family and friends at a private funeral.

It was closed to the media. The 52-year-old Mary Kennedy was found dead last week at her home. By all accounts, she committed suicide at her home.

The event, held at NYC's Standard Hotel, was hosted by the Richardson family.

"I think it was one of the most amazing memorials I've ever been to in terms of the level of affection," said one attendee. "It was incredible."

A slide show of photos of Mary played during the two-hour memorial, attended by many of Mary's friends, including sister-in-law Kerry Kennedy.

Participants avoided any mention of Mary's troubles, but talked extensively about her beauty and intelligence, generosity and kindness.

Attendees were given a card, featuring a photo of the architect, environmentalist and mother. It said: "In celebration of her radiant life."

A funeral for Mary Kennedy was held Saturday in Bedford, N.Y., a hamlet about an hour north of New York City where she lived.

Burial was at a cemetery in Centerville, Mass., several miles from the Kennedys' famed Cape Cod seaside compound in Hyannis Port.

Mary Kennedy, who committed suicide by hanging herself this week, battled depression for years, her estranged husband Robert F. Kennedy Jr. says.

"A lot of times, I don’t know how she made it through the day," Robert tells The New York Times. "She was in a lot of agony for a lot of her life."

The son of Robert F. Kennedy, Sr., adds: "I don’t think anybody who was around her didn't do everything that they could to try to help her."

Robert filed for divorce from Mary in 2010 after 16 years of marriage.

They were separated but still legally married, and have four children.

Authorities found Mary Kennedy dead Wednesday in the garage of her Mount Kisco, N.Y., home. The suspected cause of death is asphyxiation by hanging.

Mary's family, meanwhile, has issued a statement.

They criticized "certain news organizations" for portraying her in a way that is "wholly inconsistent with the sister we knew and life she, in fact, lived."

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s estranged wife Mary Kennedy died as a result of asphyxiation by hanging, confirming a report that surfaced yesterday.

Now it's official, according to the Westchester County medical examiner.

The medical examiner's report does not use the word "suicide," although it's being widely reported (and probably accurate) that Mary committed suicide.

Police found Mary Kennedy dead yesterday afternoon at her home in Bedford, N.Y. She was already dead by the time authorities arrived at the home.

According to the Bedford Police Department, officers responded to Mary's home to investigate a possible "unattended death," meaning no one saw it.

Mary and RFK Jr., the son of Robert F. Kennedy and the nephew of president John F. Kennedy, had four children. They separated back in 2010.

Her death marked the final event in a life that had turned tumultuous of late and adds yet another dark moment in the Kennedy family's history.

Psychologists said events in her recent history, such as reports of alcohol and drug abuse and psychiatric problems, pointed to an increased risk of suicide.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s wife, Mary Richardson Kennedy, was "depressed and despondent" before committing suicide this week, according to a new report.

Police found Mary Kennedy dead at her Mount Kisco, N.Y., home Wednesday.

Radar Online is reporting that the 52-year-old hanged herself in a barn, though officials have not commented publicly on Mary Kennedy's cause of death.

A longtime friend, who spoke to Mary Monday, said they were sadly not surprised, as she faced mounting financial woes at the end of her marriage.

"I spoke to Mary on Monday and she sounded extremely down," the source said. "She was depressed and despondent and worried about the future."

"Mary said she was facing financial ruin, with American Express coming after her hard for an outstanding debt, along with several other creditors."

"In addition, she was concerned that Robert was about to substantially reduce the amount of financial support he gave her and she'd lose her home."

Mary was married to the son of Robert F. Kennedy for 16 years, before he filed for divorce in May 2010. The couple had four children together.

While estranged from RFK Jr., Mary lived at the family home in Mount Kisco, while Robert spent the majority of his time in Los Angeles, Calif.
