Manti Te'o will finally face the world this Thursday, as the Notre Dame linebacker has agreed to his first on-camera interview since the Lennay Kekua hoax broke on the January 24 installment of Katie.

The Heisman Trophy runner-up spoke to ESPN on Friday, insisting he played NO role in the scheme.

But this sit-down, which will include Manti's parents, will mark his first televised Q&A since the perplexing story was broken in a Deadspin article a few days ago.

Manti Te'o has spoken to a reporter for the first time in days and gone on the record:

He played no role in Lennay Kekua and duping the public into believing he had a girlfriend who died of cancer.

"I wasn't faking it. I wasn't part of this," Te'o told ESPN's Jeremy Schaap last night in a two-and-a-half hour, off-camera interview.

The Notre Dame linebacker and NFL prospect even said he didn't know for total certainty that Kekua was a fabrication until Wednesday night when Ronaiah Tuiasosopo called him and admitted to the hoax.

"Two guys and a girl are responsible for the whole thing," Te'o said. "According to Ronaiah, Ronaiah's one."

According to a new report, Alexandra del Pilar dated Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o for a couple months toward the end of last year.

And get this: she actually exists!

Alexandra del Pilar and Manti Te'o

TMZ has uncovered evidence, in the form of anonymous quotes; Twitter posts; and, most damning of all, photos, that make it appear as if Te'o struck up a relationship with del Pilar - a 21-year old student at St. Mary's College in Indiana - some time in mid-November.

Why is this significant?

You know what they say: don't let a ridiculous marketing opportunity about a Heisman Trophy finalist's fake girlfriend go to waste.

The Florence Freedom, an independent minor league baseball team, announced last night that it would hold Manti Te'o Girlfriend Bobblehead Day on May 23, a promotion that will include:

  • Empty boxes of bobblehead dolls.
  • A kiss cam for fans to smooch their imaginary friends.
  • An air guitar contest.

Freedom general manager Josh Anderson said the event is a great way to generate "buzz" for the season, adding of any controversy that might arise:

"I don't know who we'd be offending. It would just be isolated to the guy who made his season based off this story."

Unless a new report is accurate, Te'o was a victim and Ronaiah Tuiasosopo is behind the scam.

What do you think? A Manti Te'o Girlfriend Bobblehead Day is...

An anonymous source tells ESPN that the Manti Te'o girlfriend hoax was perpetrated entirely by Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, and that the star Notre Dame linebacker played no role at all in the widely-publicized scam.

GF Hoax

The unnamed woman alleges to be an acquaintance of Tuiasosopo. She told the network that this 22-year old California resident phoned her in early December and offered up a tearful confession.

While not claiming Manti Te'o was aware Lennay Kekua didn't actually exist, a Notre Dame teammate has spoken out and said the star linebacker did "play along" to reports that his girlfriend died.

In reality, this anonymous source tells ESPN, most Fighting Irish players knew Te'o had only met Kekua once and the relationship was anything but serious.

The teammate says Te'o liked attention and this sort of move fit in with his personality.

With Manti Te'o expected to speak later today and address the girlfriend hoax that has left a country baffled, let's turn our attention for a moment over to Ronaiah Tuiasosopo.

A 22-year old whose relatives include a pair of former NFL players, Tuiasosopo played high school football in California and is reportedly a huge fan of USC.

Many believe he has either been working with Te'o on this cover-up or he's the "Catfish" behind the scam and has been posing as Lennay Kekua for years in order to punish Te'o for choosing Notre Dame over USC.

The original Deadspin article that broke this hoax lists Tuiasosopo as the individual who obtained the photo that was believed to be Lennay, the one associated with her Twitter and Facebook accounts (above).

Well, this was inevitable.

With the Manti Te'o girlfriend hoax going viral, online users across Twitter and other social media networks have taken up Te'oing, a play on Tebowing - and Kaepernicking - that features individuals posing with... well, nobody.

To wit:

Te'o is expected to address the media later this afternoon and give his side of what has grown into a surreal story.

Did he play any role in inventing Lennay Kekua as his girlfriend? Was he completely duped by Internet idiots who "Catfished" him online? Might he be gay and used this story as an alibi?

So many questions. So many confusing answers no matter where the truth lies.

Information continues to spill out and new details will undoubtedly develop in the coming days, but this much we know is true:

There was never any Manti Te'o girlfriend. Whether this Notre Dame linebacker was in on the most startling death hoax ever perpetuated, or whether he really was a victim, remains to be determined.

But Lennay Kekua never existed.

Manti Te'o has spoken out about the Lennay Kekua death hoax, as it's now been verified that the Notre Dame linebacker was never dating a Stanford student by that name last year.

But the Heisman Trophy finalist is denying reports that he played a role in duping America, instead releasing a statement that says he fell victim to someone on the Internet.

Manti Te'o statement

"This is incredibly embarrassing to talk about, but over an extended period of time, I developed an emotional relationship with a woman I met online. We maintained what I thought to be an authentic relationship by communicating frequently online and on the phone, and I grew to care deeply about her," Te'o said.

"To realize that I was the victim of what was apparently someone's sick joke and constant lies was, and is, painful and humiliating.
