Taxi and Grease star Jeff Conaway, who passed away at age 60 last May, died of a major internal infection. Coroners released his official cause of death Friday.

A toxicology test was not conducted on the body of the actor, who publicly struggled with addiction, because he was hospitalized for weeks before his death.

His blood would have tested clean in any case. Jeff Conaway was taken off life support on May 27 after being hospitalized with pneumonia and sepsis.

The troubled Conaway fell into a coma in May and was eventually allowed to pass away by his loved ones when hope for his recovery became non-existent.

He worked with Dr. Drew Pinsky, who called him "a terribly complex case with chronic pain, opiate addiction and severe childhood trauma" on Celebrity Rehab.

Grease star Jeff Conaway has died. The actor was 60 years old.

He passed away several weeks after he was found unconscious in his L.A. area home, having fallen into a coma after a reported overdose.

Doctors were not able to revive him and his family recently made the gut-wrenching, but inevitable decision to take him off life support.

Jeff's struggles became public when he appeared on Celebrity Rehab in 2008 and admitted addictions to cocaine, alcohol and painkillers.

Jeff passed away earlier today, his manager confirms.

Born in New York City, Conaway shot to fame in the ’70s as a quintessential cocky guy: first in the internationally successful Grease and then on the TV hit Taxi.

He will be missed.

Grease star Jeff Conaway’s family members haave decided to turn off the actor’s life support system, marking a sad end to his battle with substance abuse.

The family, who has kept a vigil at the L.A. hospital where Conaway is in a coma after being found unconscious at home, say his fight will end.

"Doctors advised the family that Jeff has had no brain function since he was brought into the hospital," a source close to the situation said.

It looks unlikely that Jeff Conaway will emerge from his coma.

"The feeding tube has already been removed. The ventilator which is breathing for Jeff, will be removed sometime this afternoon.”

“Jeff is in no pain whatsoever."

It's unknown how Conaway will cope when the machine is switched off, but there will be no further attempts to resuscitate the actor.
