The man accused of six murders and nearly killing U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Arizona is not mentally fit to stand trial, a judge ruled Wednesday.

U.S. Marshals dragged Jared Lee Loughner out of the courtroom because of an angry outburst as family members of the victims looked on in court.

The clearly disturbed Loughner lowered his head, raised it and said what sounded like "Thank you for the freak show. She died in front of me."

His words were loud but mumbled, and it wasn't clear who he was talking about. He wore a khaki prison suit and sported bushy, red sideburns.

U.S. District Judge Larry Burns' decision means the 21-year-old will be sent to a federal facility for up to four months in a bid to restore his competency.

The ruling came after Loughner spent five weeks at a federal facility in Springfield, Mo., examined by court-appointed mental health professionals.

Throughout March and April, the two were asked to determine whether or not Loughner understands the consequences of the case against him.

Apparently he does not, but the competency reports by psychologist Christina Pietz and psychiatrist Matthew Carroll haven't been publicly released.

For the second time since he allegedly shot 19 people, killing six, Jared Lee Loughner appeared inside a courtroom today. He pleaded not guilty to charges that he tried to kill Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and two of her aides.

At the moment, the 22-year old faces federal charges of trying to assassinate Giffords and this pair of government officials. He will later face state charges that center on the other victims.

Loughner entered a Phoenix courthouse wearing an orange jumpsuit and glasses. His hair has grown out slightly since his sinister mug shot was snapped two weeks ago.

During the hearing, U.S. District Judge Larry Burns asked Loughner's attorney, Judy Clarke - who has represented such clients as Ted Kaczynski and Olympic bomber Eric Rudolphwhether - if there was any question about her client's ability to understand the case against him.

"We are not raising any issues at this time," Clarke said.

In the following clip, the 22-year old arrested for shooting Gabrielle Giffords last week and killing six Arizona residents meanders through Pima Community College. At various point, he refers to the "genocide school," its "torture of students" and how he's "in a terrible place."

The video went live on September 23 of last year. A week later, Loughner was suspended.

On the day Barack Obama delivered a moving address at the Arizona memorial service for the victims of last week's tragic shooting in Tuscon, new information about Jared Lee Loughner was revealed.

The first incident occurred in May 2006, when Loughner was admitted to the emergency room after consuming a bottle of vodka he later said he stole from his parents because he became “very upset after his dad yelled” at him.

With their son in federal custody and a memorial service for the six victims he's accused of shooting scheduled for Wednesday, the parents of Jared Loughner have broken their silence.

"There are no words that can possibly express how we feel," they wrote in a statement handed to reporters stationed outside their home. "We wish that there were, so we could make you feel better. We don't understand why this happened.

"We care very deeply about the victims and their families. We are so very sorry for their loss."

Now, the public has received another look at the 22-year old accused of opening fire in an Arizona supermarket parking lot on Saturday, severely wounding Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and killing six onlookers.

Loughner, who appeared briefly before a judge today, faces five federal charges: one count of attempted assassination of a member of Congress, two counts of killing an employee of the United States and two counts of intent to kill employees of the United States.

He's next due in court on January 24.

Gabrielle Giffords was at the center of what President Obama has described as an "unspeakable tragedy" this morning.

The Arizona Congresswoman was one of 20 people shot - 12 of whom are injured, six reportedly killed - during a shooting in Tuscon. The public event was a meeting of constituents that took place outside a Safeway grocery store.

She underwent surgery this afternoon for a wound to the head, with Dr. Peter Rhee of the University Medical Center saying he's "very optimistic about her recovery."

The suspected culprit has been identified as a 22-year old named Jared Lee Loughner.

On her Facebook page, Sarah Palin offered "sincere condolences" to Giffords' family and others involved in the shooting. Why is this relevant?
