Pom-poms in hand and cheerleading outfit fitting snugly, Hayden Panettiere looks ready to spread a little cheer Thursday on the N. Hollywood set of her hit show, Heroes. This is sweet news, but has us a little bit confused.

After all, production has been shut down for some time... or so we thought, given the writers' strike. Our celebrity gossip coverage of Hayden has also been quieter as she and now-confirmed boyfriend Milo Ventimiglia have kept a low profile.

The romance between Heroes stars Hayden Panettiere and Milo Ventimiglia has been an open secret for months - in part because of their 12-year age gap.

"They were tired of avoiding questions and of all of the effort of keeping it secretive," a Panettiere source tells Us Weekly.

Hayden, 18, who plays Milo's niece on Heroes, was also worried about her reputation. "She didn't want people thinking she is a 'ho' because she jumped from one relationship into another," a source close to her said.

But Milo Ventimiglia, 30, had a crush on his co-star since she was dating Stephen Colletti of Laguna Beach fame. They broke up last summer.

Who can blame Milo Ventimiglia for his crush on this adorable star?

"He always had a crush, but really let her know the minute she broke up with Stephen," a source close to Hayden Panettiere and Milo Ventimiglia said.

Since Panettiere still leaves with her mom and brother, it's a good thing, a source tells Us, that Ventimiglia has her family's approval.

"Milo is such a good guy, honest and sweet," says a source. Besides, says another source, "She is really like a 30-year-old."

We're not sure how that works, but you kids run with it!

By that, we mean our girl Hayden Panettiere. While this would normally spark extreme jealousy and bitterness among our staff members (see John Mayer and Minka Kelly), we have no problem with Milo. So he's kind of our man!

For a long time, Hayden Panettiere, 18, and Milo Ventimiglia, 30, have been doing their best to deny any co-star lovin' between them. But it looks like their cover has finally been blown and the Heroes stars have gone public.

The twosome was spotted going on a shopping excursion, then later at the movies, where they took in Atonement, in L.A. Nothing says dating like making out in the theater while Keira Knightley nude appears on screen.

The celeb gossip we accepted as fact for so long yet could not officially confirm has arrived: Milo Ventimiglia and Hayden Panettiere are totally a couple!

Having previously denied a relationship, the two Heroes stars are now being considered an item by various celebrity news sources.

"Hayden's mom adores Milo. She thinks he's so cute," a family friend tells People. "She tells her friends that he's her boyfriend. She's very proud."

On a December trip to N.Y. City, Milo Ventimiglia hung out with the entire Panettiere family.

"He's even met her grandparents. He fits in perfectly with the family. Milo jokes around with her little brother, Jansen," a source dishes. "They're buddies."

When the two hotties are together as a couple, "they're affectionate and they're very comfortable around each other. He really takes care of her, even down to the little things like giving her a back massage and going with her to work."

A rep for the smoking hot teen actress responded: "We do not respond to inquiries from the media regarding Ms. Panettiere's personal life."

Since grinding and cozying up at an Emmy Awards after-party in September, the two have dodged rumors that they were dating - even though, by November, they were clearly closer than ever, being together publicly at benefits and other events.

When asked just before Thanksgiving about the reports of a possible romance with Hayden Panettiere, Milo Ventimiglia laughed, then paused and said: "She and I are close friends. It's only natural that people are going to couple us together."

As for age gap between Milo and Hayden - he is 30, she is 18 - the friend adds, "At first it doesn't seem like there's a big age difference, but then you do see it... He's more proper and reserved, and she's still playful and very girly."

At the Capri Film Festival in Italy this weekend, Hayden Panettiere looks absolutely thrilled to be sitting next to Lindsay Lohan.

Lindsay, conversely, was up to her usual, promiscuous tricks.

"After a day out and about in Capri, Lohan headed back to her hotel," a source said. "[She had to get ready] for her date with the Italian Charmer she picked up a few hours earlier: Roman bartender Alessandro Di Nunzio."

Panettiere, meanwhile, looks like she's just trying to avoid being sullied by Lohan's presence. The Heroes actress also may be trying to avoid all celebrity news outlets right now. How come?

Because insiders have confirmed that her and co-star Milo Ventimiglia are, in fact, an item. Scandalous!

The Heroes star and mom were in town because Hayden is going to present at the Z100 Jingle Ball at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Friday.

Heroes actress Hayden Panettiere was in Washington, D.C., on Friday, speaking to 22 students from across the country who were honored for environmental achievements as part of the Forecast Earth Summit, sponsored by The Weather Channel.

As her comments showed, our girl seems to be developing quite the activist streak... and we must say, she's quite the natural holding that Weather Channel mic!

We'd get our weather forecasts from Hayden Panettiere if we could. Every morning would be bright and sunny with a 100 percent chance of sweltering heat!

Well, at least in terms of the Heroes' star's activist streak.

"Absolutely, I would take that," Panettiere told People. "She was definitely one of my inspirations growing up and she was definitely somebody I looked up to."

While Angelina Jolie is a strong advocate for humanitarian causes, the Heroes star is making headlines for her work on behalf of marine mammals.

A warrant was issued for Hayden Panettiere in Japan after she and other activists attempted to protect dolphins from being slaughtered by local fishermen.

"I grew up near the Hudson River in New York. I didn't grow up in the water; I don't surf," she said. "People think I surf because of the footage. I was just in a panic and happened to paddle really fast. I was hauling butt out there!"

Hayden Panettiere credits the success of Heroes with helping give her both the inner strength and the star power to bring attention to these types of issues. But the show's success can be viewed in yet another way by Hollywood's teen queen:

"It has completely ruined my personal life. I mean, you walk out the door and you've got 10 cameras in your face. Obviously everything in my life is on display whether it be true or false ... 99 percent of it false."

For now, Hayden Panettiere says her job is about all the social life she can handle, and she prefers a quiet night at home over any sort of club scene.
