Last night's Grey's Anatomy Season 10 Episode 21 marked the fourth-to-last installment for Sandra Oh's Cristina Yang on the long-running ABC medical drama.

Fans saw why she did not win the Harper Avery Award, and learned that next week, Isaiah Washington's Preston Burke makes his long-awaited return.

According to Catherine Avery, Cristina Yang could never win because the Harper Avery Foundation co-owns the hospital where Yang works. That's it.

She actually received the most votes and should have won, though ... so it's both more and less crushing for her we'd have to imagine. Politics ...

Amelia Shepherd, meanwhile, is engaged, and Caterina Scorsone's character visited Seattle to see what a life with kids and her career would be like.

Certainly Grey's Anatomy offers plenty of case studies there.

Thursday's Grey's Anatomy Season 10 Episode 20 saw Cristina Yang not take home the Harper Avery Award in what can only be described as a shocker.

Seriously?! Seriously ... how did she not win the thing?

After a slew of recent Cristina-centric episodes (watch Grey's Anatomy online to catch up) were seemingly constructed as a buildup to this defining moment.

It may prove defining, alright, but not how we expected.

Could this frustrating, disheartening loss be the catalyst for Cristina leaving the hospital, which we know will happen as Sandra Oh is out after Season 10?

That would certainly constitute the proverbial curveball.

Change is coming, no question about it, and fast. As Cristina was left reeling, nearly everyone else was having trouble with juggling their own responsibilities ...

On Grey's Anatomy Season 10 Episode 18, the doctors of of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital were exposed to flu-inflected patients. That's never a good thing.

There's no taking sick days when you're the docs, apparently. As Derek, who claims he never gets sick, is preparing for a speech, he falls ill like the others.

And so the flu began taking its toll on Grey's Anatomy Season 10 Episode 18, though fortunately McDreamy still found a way to help a young patient.

Between him rehearsing with baby Bailey and Meredith saving the day and standing in to give Der's speech, it was a great night for the family.

Cristina and Owen worked to help a family with two daughters struggling failing hearts. It will be interesting to see just what is afflicting this group.

Meanwhile, a new physician introduced Alex to the idea of private practice, in which he would work fewer hours for more money. Might he consider that?

There was a surprise surgery for someone's birthday... a dead supporting character... and some seriously hot sex.

Just an ordinary night of Thursday television this week? Not exactly. We rundown the highlights below and make it easy for readers to watch TV online in order to catch up.

------------------------------------------------------

It was Richard Webber's birthday on GREY'S ANATOMY and Bailey gifted him with an unusual surgery. A really, really unusual surgery.

Elsewhere, Jackson and April got an unexpected, unpleasant surprise from the former's mother. Watch Grey's Anatomy online to find out what she wanted:

Staying on ABC, SCANDAL had one question to answer on the appropriately-titled "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang."

Grey's Anatomy Season 10 Episode 15 featured some intense medical drama, reminding us that these hot docs and all their personal drama do work in a hospital.

That's not to say there weren't some interesting character developments as well, perhaps most notably the continuation of last week's "panty police" storyline.

Grey's Docs

Hunt takes action against Jolex for breaking the no fraternizing rule, while Human Resources also wants to talk to ... Arizona. Ready for this major bombshell?

The anonymous harassment complaint came from Leah. But not against Arizona. Against Callie ... for no reason at all other than straight up jealousy, apparently.

Yet just when you'd think this might spell doom for Calzona, the latter half gives a compelling speech and they appear ready to weather the latest storm.

Meanwhile, Stephanie kicks a baby. Inside of a cardboard box next to the dumpster, but still, that is not something you come across every day, is it?

Following the anonymous complaint the previous week, Grey's Anatomy Season 10 Episode 14 saw the hospital implement a no-relationship policy.

That's right, Grey's Anatomy without the romance. This won't last, of course, as there would be no show without it - a fact clearly not lost on the writers.

After 200 episodes, you start to run out of fresh ideas.

Anyway, Owen enacted a "non-fraternization" policy that essentially banned on-call room hookups or dating between docs overall. His main justification?

The board wants a "safe" work environment focused on patients and believes this can only be achieved without all of the relationship drama we love.

Still, we would have no show. So it won't last. It can't.

In a shocking announcement, Grey's Anatomy producer Shonda Rhimes confirmed today that Isaiah Washington will check back in to her ABC series to help bid farewell to Sandra Oh in May.

The actor departed the series at the conclusion of Season 3 amidst a firestorm he created by referring to then-colleague T.R. Knight by a gay slur.

Washington's character, Dr. Preston Burke, was written off the drama when he left Oh's Cristina at the altar.

Burke and Yang

Oh, meanwhile, said last year that she would be leaving the drama following Grey's Anatomy Season 10.

Grey's Anatomy Season 10 Episode 13 marked its 2014 premiere and answered perhaps the show's single biggest burning question: Who will April choose?

She ran out of the church, followed her heart and actually chose Jackson, a fact made even more shocking by the fact that the two weren't speaking at work.

The weren't just together, but married.

Meanwhile, in Derek's POTUS storyline, not much was uncovered in the White House investigation, except Derek sending $3,500 to a family for unknown reasons.

It was for an incident that happened when he was a child, we learned, but what we didn't learn was more about what his project entails with the Commander-in-Chief.

Moreover, how it'll impact Meredith.

The troubled Alex Karev, for his part, punched Ross hard, yet ultimately peace when saying goodbye to his father on Grey's Anatomy Season 10 Episode 13.

Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey have signed two-year contracts to stay with ABC's Grey's Anatomy through the spring of 2016, according to reports.

The actors who have played Dr. Meredith Grey and Dr. Derek Shepherd since the show's debut in 2005 will keep the actors on the show through Season 12.

ABC has yet to officially pick up the medical drama beyond Grey's Anatomy Season 10, but it seemed more than likely before this and even more so now.

Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey

Fellow Grey's original Sandra Oh won't be joining them, however. The perennial Emmy contender announced in August that this spring is her swan song.

Six originals in all - Oh, Dempsey, Pompeo, Justin Chambers, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr. - came into the current season with expiring contracts.

The future for the others is unclear, but with Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey, plus a bunch of newcomers on board, the show will go on ... for awhile it appears.

Grey's Anatomy Season 10 Episode 12 marked the last installment of the medical drama until February. Sad is that is, it gave us plenty to talk about until then.

It was April's big day, but it was hardly going well at the onset, as she worried about Jackson. Meanwhile, Cristina and Meredith continued to argue. A lot.

Meanwhile, Bailey was honest with Ben about his move to Seattle, Shane put himself in a risky situation, and McDreamy received a life-changing phone call.

We're not going to spoil anything more about Grey's Anatomy Season 10 Episode 12 here, because you've come to watch "Get Up, Stand Up" for yourself.
