Golden Globe Awards

Hosted by the hilarious Ricky Gervais, featuring alcohol for the celebrities and moving along at a brisk pace, the Golden Globes are far more enjoyable to watch than any other awards broadcast.

Who took home the top trophies last night? A list of winners follows:

• Best Television Series - Drama: Mad Men
• Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Drama: Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife
• Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Drama: Michael C. Hall, Dexter
• Best Television Series - Comedy: Glee

• Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Comedy or Musical: Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
• Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Comedy or Musical: Toni Collette, United States of Tara
• Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television: Chloe Sevigny, Big Love 
• Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television: John Lithgow, Dexter

As the only awards ceremony that honors the best in movies and television, the Golden Globes will be handed out on January 17.

It was a pretty good evening for Ugly Betty and a few other shows at the Golden Globe Awards last night.

In a pleasant surprise, America Ferrera (pictured) took home the trophy for best TV comedy actress.

She dedicated it to everyone who is not exactly beautiful - somewhere, Anna Nicole Smith was weeping with gratitude.

Meanwhile, the movie Dreamgirls won for best musical or comedy, while former American Idol Jennifer Hudson remained an Oscar favorite with a victory for best supporting actress.

In other awards news:

• Grey's Anatomy was the best TV drama series. We agree.
• The winner of top actor in a musical or comedy was none other than Borat himself: Sacha Baron Cohen.
• Babel was named best movie. As if Brad Pitt didn't have enough in his life to be thankful for.

Helen Mirren was best actress for her role in The Queen.

But we have nothing funny to say about that.

Nominees for the Golden Globes were announced this morning and two actors stood out from the rest:

1. Leonardo DiCaprio, who scored best actor in a drama nods for both Blood Diamond and The Departed.
2. Jennifer Hudson, nominated for best supporting actress in her big-screen debut, Dreamgirls.

"I'm overwhelmed right now," Hudson said on the Today show. "I just started screaming when they said the names."

Dreamgirls racked up multiple nominations, including a best actress, musical or comedy, nod for star Beyoncé Knowles and a supporting actor nomination for Eddie Murphy.

Actress nominees for movie dramas are: Penelope Cruz, for Volver; Judi Dench, Notes on a Scandal; Maggie Gyllenhaal, Sherrybaby; Helen Mirren, The Queen; and Kate Winslet, Little Children.

Comedy/musical actress nominees are: Annette Bening, Running With Scissors; Toni Collette, Little Miss Sunshine; Beyonce, Dreamgirls; Meryl Streep, The Devil Wears Prada; and Rene Zellweger, Miss Potter.

Besides Murphy, other supporting actor nominees include: Jack Nicholson and Mark Wahlberg (in The Departed) and Brad Pitt (Babel).
