Glee has pushed back the premiere of its fifth season, originally set for September 19, following the tragic death of Cory Monteith last weekend.

The hit Fox show will now return one week later, September 26.

In a statement, Fox said that the network, producers and 20th Century Fox TV decided to delay starting production until August, pushing back the premiere.

Vancouver, B.C., police found Cory Monteith dead in his hotel after he apparently overdosed on heroin and alcohol. The actor was just 31 years old.

It's not yet known how the hit, music-filled show will address the loss of Finn, a central character for its first four seasons, in the upcoming Season 5.

How do you think Glee should handle the tragedy?

It's unsurprising but official: the Cory Monteith autopsy results are in and this actor died from a mixture of heroin and alcohol.

Sources close to the Glee star and the Glee set, meanwhile, say cast members and producers saw the actor headed down a dangerous path.

They knew his drug habit had returned, they knew specifically that heroin was the issue, and they pushed Monteith to enter rehab this spring.

Naya Rivera has become the first member of the Glee cast to speak extensively on the tragic death of Cory Monteith.

With Lea Michele having requested privacy in the wake of her boyfriend's sudden passing, and many other stars having taken to Twitter to express shock and remorse, Rivera has now released the following statement:

Cory Monteith and Naya Rivera

"The entire Glee family and I are deeply saddened by this tragedy. Cory was and always will be a part of my own family and a good friend.

"He was a special part of this world and will forever be missed. My heart goes out to Cory's family and Lea and while we are grateful for everyone's well wishes, privacy during this time of grief is greatly appreciated."

Following the tragic death of Cory Monteith, it may not be important in the grand scheme of things - but it's something Fox will need to consider:

How will Glee Season 5 handle the passing of a central cast member?

Cory Monteith as Finn

It's not unprecedented for programs to deal with the loss of an actor or actress.

The West Wing gave John Spencer's Leo a heart attack. Just last year, Dallas wrote in a funeral for J.R. Ewing after Larry Hagman died.

Glee star Cory Monteith was found dead Saturday. He was just 31.

Vancouver police found Monteith dead after he failed to check out at noon from the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel. Staff went to check on him and made the discovery.

When Glee Season 5 kicks off on September 19, four familiar faces will not be around to welcome viewers back to the Fox musical comedy.

The network announced today (via TV Line) that the following actors/actresses will not return as series regulars:

  • Heather Morris (Brittany)
  • Mark Salling (Puck)
  • Amber Riley (Mercedes)
  • Harry Shum, Jr. (Mike)
Glee Peeps

In related news, Dianna Agron - who scarcely appeared as Quinn on Glee Season 4 - is not slated to make any appearances at all in 2013-2014.

It is possible that any or all of the aforementioned quartet may pop up for at least one or two episodes, but it's too early to know for sure at the moment.

Earlier this week, Fox announced its fall premiere calendar.
