Charlie Hunnam surprised many over the weekend when he dropped out of Fifty Shades of Grey.

But at least one insider familiar with the actor says she isn't shocked Hunnam has withdrawn from the role of Christian Grey... she's shocked he ever agreed to it in the first place!

"What he was taking on with this role was not what Charlie wants in his future career," this source tells E! News.

The mole goes on to explain that this Sons of Anarchy star is content with his current stature of Hollywood. He isn't looking to become an A-lister.

Following the shocking news that Christian Grey will be recast in the forthcoming Fifty Shades of Grey movie, will producers soon be looking for a new Ana as well?

Charlie Hunnam is out of the project before it even began, citing scheduling conflicts. It's unclear what new conflicts could have arisen in the last month, however.

Unofficially, The Hollywood Reporter claims Charlie was actually intimidated by the amount of negative attention his casting received, and he got cold feet.

Whatever the reason, Hunnam's exit leaves his would-be co-star, Dakota Johnson, on shaky ground, with some fans calling for her to be replaced too.

Dakota was a fresh face that Focus and Universal loved, but one of the biggest reasons she was cast was because of her chemistry with Charlie.

Ian Somerhalder and Matt Bomer fans everywhere, rejoice! There's hope once again to see them portray Christian Grey on the big screen.

In shocking news announced this afternoon, Charlie Hunnam has pulled out of the role in the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey movie adaptation.

As Jax

Hunnam, best known for his role as Jax on FX's Sons of Anarchy, has de-committed from playing Dakota Johnson's love interest in the forthcoming project.

Interestingly, previous reports hinted at Hunnam quitting Fifty Shades of Grey because of fan reactions to his initial casting in the coveted role.

Those rumors were proven erroneous, but the response was underwhelming at best. Some readers even petitioned the producers for a new Christian.

So why did he actually exit the project - which has been confirmed - now?

Needless to say, no one was more shocked that Charlie Hunnam landed the role of Christian Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey than his Sons of Anarchy co-stars.

Hunnam, who plays morally compromised Jax Teller on the hard-hitting FX drama, did not strike his fellow cast members as the mommy porn type.

“When he told me that it was happening, I just howled. I mean I think we all did. We’re all like, what!?” says Maggie Siff, who plays Jax’s savvy wife Tara.

“And then talked to him seriously about it. I think he’s very brave to it."

"He doesn’t do anything unless he feels it deep down. He’s not going to do something just because all of his agents are telling him to do something."

Jennifer Ehle has been cast as Ana Steele's mom in the upcoming film adaptation of the hit mommy porn novel Fifty Shades of Grey, reports say.

The actress will portray Carla, the mother of Dakota Johnson's lead character and lovely Christian Grey plaything, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Ehle signing on completes another piece of the casting puzzle, although the key roles of Kate Kavanagh and Elliot Grey remain vacant as of this report.

The Fifty Shades of Grey movie is set to hit screens in August 2014. The two lead roles were confirmed last month in Johnson and Charlie Hunnam.

Fans weren't exactly over the moon with the choices, with reactions ranging from apathetic to launching an online petition for a new Christian and Ana.

Some even started bogus rumors that Hunnam was quitting the project over the widespread fan unrest. He's not, but the hoax itself tells you a lot.

Rumors that Charlie Hunnam is quitting the Fifty Shades of Grey movie have surfaced in recent days. The alleged reason? The widespread fan discontent.

While that is undeniably the reason for the rumors themselves - you wouldn't hear such rumors over The Vampire Diaries' Ian Somerhalder - it's untrue.

Some are even brainstorming who should play Christian Grey if Hunnam walks. While absurd, that does tell you a lot about how his casting was received.

Like it or not, though, Hunnam and Dakota Johnson will star in the Fifty Shades of Grey movie. He was hanging with E.L. James only a few days ago.

The book's author tweeted, "Guess who" alongside a photo of Charlie's forearm tattoo that his character, Jax Teller, wears on FX's Sons of Anarchy.

Fifty Shades of Grey wine. It's actually a thing. E.L. James, author of the popular novels, has introduced it, starting with two "personally blended" bottles.

Just as Christian and Anastasia blend their bodies into one. Or something.

The Fifty Shades of Grey wine varietals, titled Red Satin and White Silk, do not come with handcuffs, but may make you more likely to end up in them.

We mean sexually, not in a DUI arrest sense. But don't drink and drive kids.

So what do they actually taste like? We'll try to refrain from obvious jokes and sexual innuendo for just a moment and work from the official release:

To put it politely, the casting choices for Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey's roles in the Fifty Shades of Grey movie did not exactly wow the book's fans.

Also to put it politely, Dakota Johnson and Charlie Hunnam have been cast as Ana and Christian and there's no petition or whining that will change it.

  • Chris Hemsworth Image

However, the question of who will play key supporting characters Kate Kavanagh and Elliot Grey is still unanswered, and may offer readers some hope.

Elliot is Christian's older brother, so that probably rules out a lot of young hunks people wanted to see as Christian. Hunnam himself is 33 years old.

A mature, yet still good-looking actor: Any ideas?

It was only a matter of time. With Charlie Hunnam talking about the "tangible chemistry" he felt with co-star Dakota Johnson, a fan has put it to the test. Sort of.

In the following Fifty Shades of Grey trailer, we get a not-entirely-accurate sense of how the actors cast as Christian and Ana might work as an on-screen duo.

Using spliced-together clips of their previous roles, of course:

Dakota Johnson is not expected to go blonde, nor will Charlie Hunnam (also seen in last night's Sons of Anarchy Season 6 premiere) look as young as this.

Still, one has to hand it to the creator of this mashup of some of their sexiest scenes in this trailer, giving fans a taste of what to expect next summer.

It may be months before we get a real Fifty Shades of Grey trailer (the Super Bowl on February 2 feels like a good time), so these will have to do for now.

Not that there's a shortage of them. Check out another fan-made effort amusingly, featuring no leads at all (just a lot of sexy imagery) after the jump:

Charlie Hunnam may not have been fans' ideal choice to play Christian Grey, but the Fifty Shades of Grey movie star may be a better fit than many realize.

During an interview with E! News, he was asked about the nudity, S&M and feverish sex that will go down between Christian and Anastasia Steele.

"I spent a lifetime preparing myself for that," he said with a smile.

In all seriousness, Hunnam says he has great chemistry with Dakota Johnson and it's "incredibly exciting" to play E.L. James' character on screen.

"He's a very complex, fascinating character and I feel really excited and delighted to be entrusted with the job of bringing him to life and its a big responsibility."
