He may have taken the stage with four past hosts to kick off the 2013 Emmy Awards, but make no mistake:

Neil Patrick Harris was the man in charge of Hollywood last night.

How did the How I Met Your Mother star do as emcee of television's biggest night?

He zinged Paula Deen (saying she must now refer to Orange is the New Black as "Orange Is the New African American."). He mocked Jimmy Fallon for some "gay" dancing. He turned down a demand from Amy Poehler to "Twerk it."

He was generally safe and cordial, relying more on his general charm than any over-the-top sketch or jokes.

Is that what you look for in an Emmys host? Sound off now and let us know what you thought of NPH on stage?

The 2013 Emmys were filled with both celebrations and tributes.

For while shows such as Modern Family and Breaking Bad gave folks plenty to fist pump over, a number of untimely deaths also gave them far too many colleagues to moun.

Along those sad lines, Jane Lynch paid tribute to late Glee star Cory Monteith.

"It is remarkable, and perhaps a little curious, how quickly TV shows become like family in some ways," Lynch said during the broadcast. "This summer on our show, Glee, we suffered a painful death in our family. Cory Monteith played Finn Hudson, a star quarterback turned wide-eyed, heartfelt glee singer.

"And from the first time you saw Cory, he had a star quality and genuine sweetness that made it impossible not to fall in love with him. And millions did fall in love with Cory."

To coincide with the Emmy-winning HBO film Behind the Candelabra, Sir Elton John paid tribute to the late Liberace at the 2013 Emmy Awards last night.

Stars Matt Damon and Michael Douglas introduced the singer, who took the stage to perform "Home Again," a song he said reminded him of Liberace.

John said Liberace had always enjoyed being at home. Take a look:

Elton John talked about his influence and joked about not realizing Liberace was gay, referring to him by his nickname "Lee" before performing "Home Again."

It was the first time he had performed at the Emmy Awards. "Home Again" will appear on John's upcoming album, The Diving Board, due out Tuesday.

What did you think about Elton John's Liberace tribute?

Henry Bromell won a posthumous award for the Homeland Season 2 episode "Q&A" at the 2013 Emmy Awards last night. The writer passed away in March.

His widow, Sarah Bromell, accepted his award and noted how hard he and the Homeland crew worked on the episode that was pivotal for Season 2.

The Outstanding Writing Emmy marked a tribute to his career, and Claire Danes, who won for Outstanding Lead Actress, remembered him as well:

“He was a brilliant person and so kind, and we continue to think of him every day as we work on the show he helped define,” she said of Henry Bromell.

His widow noted how pivotal that episode was to Homeland Season 2.

If you don't know who actress Merritt Wever is, you will after seeing her Emmy Awards acceptance speech, which was easily the best in the show's history.

When Tina Fey and Amy Poehler announced that Wever won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, many viewers were pretty surprised.

But that surprise paled in comparison to this amazing acceptance speech:

Host Neil Patrick Harris, after she exited stage right, summed it up best:

“Merritt Wever, best speech ever. Good luck to everyone else.”

Some may recognize her from Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Lena Dunham's first film Tiny Furniture, or as Schmidt’s sort-of girlfriend Elizabeth on New Girl.

But the 2013 Emmys honored Merritt for her work on Nurse Jackie as Zoey Barlow, the titular character’s best friend at work. For that, we congratulate her!

And encourage others to prepare speeches ahead of time.

In addition NBC's Sunday Night Football theme song, country superstar Carrie Underwood can be seen at the Emmy Awards this Sunday night on CBS.

The six-time Grammy Award winner will perform during a special tribute honoring the 50th anniversary of 1963 television milestones. Why is that significant?
