Of the 12 victims who were killed by James Holmes in Aurora, Colorado last Friday, three of them died as true heroes, saving the lives of their girlfriends through acts of strength and bravery.

The New York Daily News has paid tribute to each one.

Aurora Shooting Victims

Jon Blunk took Jansen Young to the midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises in celebration of her graduation from veterinarian school.

“He’s a hero, and he’ll never be forgotten. Jon took a bullet for me," Young tearfully told the newspaper, while her mother explained than Blunk shoved her daughter to the ground when Holmes opened fire.

“He was 6-feet-2, in incredible shape, which is why he was able to push her down under the seats of the theater,” said Young's mother. “He pushed her down on the floor and laid down on top of her and he died there.”

Count Michael Bloomberg as someone who doesn't think any lives would have been saved inside an Aurora, Colorado movie theater last Friday if MORE people had been carrying guns.

During an appearance on Face the Nation, the NYC Mayor was asked about remarks made by a Texas Congressman in which Louie Gohmert speculated that James Holmes could have been stopped and fewer people killed/injured if only movie goers had been "carrying."

Bloomberg's responded by basically making like Seth Meyers and asking: REALLY?!? You really think it will be safer to create a "wild west" like country where every other person is holding a weapon?

In the wake of the massacre, many celebrities took to Twitter and also called on Obama/politicians to crack down on gun control. The President has made no attempt to do so during his time in office so far.

Torrence Brown, Jr., one of the many Dark Knight Rises viewers who was inside the Aurora, Colorado movie theater when James Holmes opened fire last Friday morning, has filed a lawsuit in conjunction with the massacre.

James Holmes Mug Shot

Brown was not physically injured, but he lost close friend A.J. Boik in the shooting and says he's suffering from major trauma. As a result, he's filed a suit against three defendants:

  1. The movie theater, which attorney Donald Karpel says was negligent in not possessing a more secure emergency door, which made it easy for Holmes to prop it open and enter it with his arsenal of guns.
  2. Holmes' doctors. The lawyer also tells TMZ that Holmes is believed to have been on medication - he was acting VERY strangely yesterday in court - and his doctors failed in monitoring their patient properly.
  3. Warner Bros., the studio behind The Dark Knighr Rises, because the movie is especially violent, Holmes was basing his actions largely around it and movie goes weren't even sure if he was part of the attraction or not when he first made his fatal move.

"Somebody has to be responsible for the rampant violence that is shown today," Karpel says.

Aurora Shooting Victims

Meanwhile, with James Holmes in custody and new information continuing to leak out regarding this suspect, President Obama touched down yesterday in Aurora.

He visited the University of Colorado Hospital, visited with the families of the victims and met with Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper.

"Out of this darkness a brighter day is going to come," Obama said. "Although the perpetrator of this evil act has received a lot of attention over the last couple of days that attention will fade away. And in the end, after he has felt the full force of our justice system, what will be remembered are the good people who were impacted by this tragedy."

An X-rated dating site has confirmed that suspected Colorado shooter James Holmes was, indeed, a client, having made a profile for the service on July 5 and last logging in some time this week.

Adult Friend Finder tells TMZ that it traced the profile in question back to Aurora, Colorado - the town in which Holmes is accused of killing 12 people who were attending a showing of The Dark Knight Rises - and that the address and date of birth entered match those of the alleged murderer.

James Holmes Profile

The profile lists basic information, such as Holmes labeling himself a "light/social drinker," while also including his penis size ("short/average") and, most eerie of all, a message that reads:

Will you visit me in prison?

Police will likely investigate the profile just to learn as much as possible about the 24-year old in custody.

Holmes reportedly did not put up a fight when arrested, but he was sporting red hair at the time and told authorities "I'm The Joker" upon being apprehended.

Amidst the sadness and shock over the fatal Aurora, Colorado shooting at a Dark Knight Rises screening early Friday morning, many celebrities have taken to Twitter to express their sympathy for the victims and their families.

Many have also used this as an opportunity to push for stricter gun laws, an area in which President Barack Obama has been considered a total failure by The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

Batman Mourns

Here is a sampling of star Tweets on the matter. Read through them and share your take with us now:

Cory Monteith: guns don't kill people, people do etc.. but until we can fix society somehow you probably shouldn't be able to buy AR-15's at a fishing shop ... such a senseless tragedy. when are we going to reconsider the role of guns in society? how many more times does this have to happen?

Susan Sarandon: The right to bear arms was referring to muskets. Maybe it's time to re-think our gun policy on this day of slaughter in Colorado.

Piers Morgan: Lunatics like this will always try and get guns. It should be 100,000 times harder than it is for them to do so. That's my point.

Miley Cyrus (in a retweet): Less guns = less psychopaths who can get guns = less innocent lives lost....seems pretty obvious to me.

For the time time since the deadly Colorado shooting that took 12 lives, someone associated with The Dark Knight Rises has spoken out.

And that someone is director Christopher Nolan.

New Poster for The Dark Knight Rises

“Speaking on behalf of the cast and crew of The Dark Knight Rises, I would like to express our profound sorrow at the senseless tragedy that has befallen the entire Aurora community," Nolan said, adding:

"I would not presume to know anything about the victims of the shooting, but that they were there last night to watch a movie.

"I believe movies are one of the great American art forms and the shared experience of watching a story unfold on screen is an important and joyful pastime. The movie theatre is my home, and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me. Nothing any of us can say could ever adequately express our feelings for the innocent victims of this appalling crime, but our thoughts are with them and their families."

James Holmes is in custody for the crime, which tragically took place just miles from the 1999 school shooting incident in Columbine, Colorado.

We have a disturbing update on James Holmes, the 24-year old suspected of killing 12 people and injuring dozens more inside an Aurora, Colorado movie theater this morning.

Holmes
  • The shooting took place at approximately 12:38 a.m. local time.
  • Holmes protected himself with a ballistic helmet, a vest, a throat protector, a gas mask and black tactical gloves
  • Officials believe Holmes acted on his own: “We are not looking for any other suspects,” said Oates. “We are confident he acted alone.”
  • Holmes possessed three weapons when he was arrested behind the theater: an AR-15 assault rifle, a Remington shotgun and a 40-caliber Glock handgun. All were purchased legally.
  • Holmes' hair was painted red and he told police, upon being apprehended, that he was "The Joker."

At last count, 71 people were wounded in this gunman's attack. President Obama addressed the nation earlier today, honoring the victims and asking America's to treasure the fragility of life.

Mitt Romney, meanwhile, has also made a speech in which he offered his "deepest condolences" to those affected by the tragedy and added:

"I stand before you today not as a man running for office but as a father and grandfather, a husband, an American. This is a time for each of us to look into our hearts and remember how much we love one another and how much we love and how much we care for our great country. There’s so much love and goodness in the heart of America."

In the wake of today's horrific Dark Knight Rises shooting in Colorado, Warner Bros. has chosen to pull the trailer for another movie out of theaters.

The preview for Gangster Squad, which has been online since May and is posted below, was NOT played prior to this morning's Batman feature and has NOT been attached to most of The Dark Knight Rises screenings around the country.

Still, one scene does depict mobsters opening fire inside a movie theater and, with the spot scheduled to start running nationwide this weekend, the studio thought it was inappropriate to air at such a time.

Gangster Squad will open on September 7. It stars Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone and Josh Brolin and centers on a LAPD unit assigned to rid Los Angeles of organized crime in the 1940s.

Do you think Warner Bros. made the right decision to yank the trailer from theaters?

Our thoughts and prayer go out to all victims of the senseless shooting inside a Colorado movie theater early this morning.

But we take this time to recognize Jessica Ghawi, a 24-year old aspiring sportscaster who lost her life in the attack, because her tragic story is almost impossible to believe.

Jessica Ghawi Pic

Ghawi, who wrote a blog under the name Jessica Redfield, posted a recent entry in which she detailed just how fortunate she had been to narrowly escape a fatal mall shooting in Toronto last month that left one person dead and seven injured.

"What started off as a trip to the mall to get sushi and shop, ended up as a day that has forever changed my life," Ghawi wrote, explaining how a last-second decision to eat a different meal for dinner caused her to escape - by minutes - the gunman who opened fire in the food court she had planned to be in.
