We are of the opinion that NBC's sci-fi hit Heroes kind of sucks.

Hayden Panettiere, apparently, feels likewise about our profession.

The 19-year-old actress has spent a lot of time growing up in front of the cameras, having worked in the industry since she could barely walk.

But she’s still not used to the celebrity gossip limelight.

She blames the paparazzi for ruining her relationships, most notably the one she had with Heroes co-star Milo Ventimiglia. Panettiere said she’s pissed by the endless cycle of the public craving details about celebs, and the paparazzi who feed it.

Not that she plays into this by posing in Details or anything.

“It’s very, very difficult and people have no idea what they do to peoples’ relationships. They destroy them. The paparazzi and the public,” she told Company.

“The public wants to read about your personal life, and the paparazzi give it to them by nosing into your personal life and saying things that are horrible.”

Sure, she's got a point. But she also dated a 30-year-old guy when she was 18, and stars on a hugely successful show. That's going to attract some attention.

Since breaking up with Milo, she has been linked to British TV presenter Steve Jones (age 32, for those keeping score). She's sported some bikinis and a misspelled tattoo lately, both of which are going to be magnets for attention, too!

Many words have been used to describe Perez Hilton, and most of them are probably pretty accurate. But you will never hear him be called:

1. Lazy
2. Apologetic

Love him or hate him, by cranking out blog post after blog post for five years running, Perez has become a celebrity brand all his own, and one with much greater staying power and influence than many of the celebrities his website covers.

All by being a bitch, by his own admission, and he's not about to stop.

He is not sorry for trashing Miss California, the now-dethroned Carrie Prejean, for her views that marriage should be between a man and woman.

He is not sorry he accused Michael Jackson of faking it on the day he died, although he did later redact his post to remove the cynical speculation.

He is not sorry he posted Dustin Lance Black sex photos showing the Milk writer and gay rights advocate having unprotected sex with a porn star.

Nor is he fully sorry for directing a gay slur at Black Eyed Peas singer will.i.am last month (though after getting his ass kicked by the Black Eyed Peas' manager, Perez issued a qualified apology to "the gay community," but not will.i.am).

Every time Perez Hilton, 31, whose real name is Mario Lavandeira, utters the sort of outrage that would land him in prison for life if the world were governed by laws of good taste and kindness, his popularity only grows.

So why would he be sorry? Perez no longer just gossips about celebrities; he has now become one. Now they gossip about him. The top celebrity gossip competitors rarely evoke the passionate love/hate reactions engendered by Hilton.

Increasingly, he is a force to be reckoned with in other spheres of pop culture as well. On July 21, Hilton launched his own music imprint, Perezcious Music.

While he is trying to come up with a fresh idea for a TV entertainment news show, he's already got Radio Perez, a daily gossip report for Citadel Broadcasting.

Even Hilton, a once-schlubby but increasingly lean (thanks to two trainers and a $70-a-day meal service) Cuban-American kid from Miami, seems amazed.

"In. San. Ity," he trilled, sitting in a T-shirt and sweat pants on an L-shaped couch in the living room of his surprisingly modest two-bedroom apartment.

Has Jon Gosselin moved on from Hailey Glassman to another woman?

The reality TV father of eight had dinner with a mystery blonde in New York at the Upper East Side's Accademia di Vino on Saturday evening.

Is Jon now cheating on Hailey, just as he is rumored to have cheated on Kate with Glassman and Deanna Hummel as his marriage crumbled?

It doesn't look like it. At least from what we can tell, his motives are different. The mystery woman is Kate Major, senior reporter for Star.

Aww yeah. You know what that means. Kate Gosselin is getting thrown under the bus hard in the new issue of the celebrity gossip tabloid.

No publicists were on hand to regulate what was said and put an official stamp on the story. Hopefully, that means off-color accounts of Hailey Glassman and her penchant for booze, coke and tag-team action.

Looks like Jon has finally realized that it's time to get his side of the story out in a publication that will print whatever the hell it wants and regards facts as mere suggestions won't hold back on the juicy details.

The dinner did not appear to be a date, but Kate Major "was flirting shamelessly with Jon," according to Us Weekly. Major told the N.Y. Daily News: "I have no comment. There was no date. Jon and I are just friends."

Just when you think OK! Magazine cannot lower the celebrity gossip bar any further, then come out with a new cover that proves you wrong. Kudos, guys.

While Michael Jackson’s mom, Katherine Jackson, was named guardian of the three children of the late singer in his will, it’s Michael’s sister Janet Jackson who has emerged in the eyes of many as their favored caregiver.

“All three want Janet Jackson to read to them at night,” a Jackson family friend says. “They just melt into her arms when she walks into the house.”

So much so, the magazine reports, that adorable Prince and Paris Jackson, 12 and 11, plus little Blanket, 7, have reached out to Janet and said ...

“Janet has completely bonded with those children in the last two weeks,” the friend continues. “She has been the rock for [Paris, Prince and Blanket]."

"It’s clear to everyone that they are looking to her for comfort and guidance.”

It's clear to everyone? Really? No one's doubting Janet Jackson is probably an awesome aunt, but do the kids even know her? Do they love Katherine less?

We also enjoy the trumping up of Debbie Rowe and her role in all this, as if she is trying to break up the family. While that would be good drama, it's untrue.

One semi-legitimate point raised is that at 79, caring for three kids might be too much for Katherine Jackson, a problem eased by Janet Jackson’s presence.

“Janet is not only willing to raise those children, she is also the only relative of Michael's who really knows how to protect them,” an insider tells OK!.

“Janet knows the value of a private life and knows how to keep her personal life out of the news. She is determined to do that for Michael’s children. She says that he would want no less for them, pointing out how far he went to shelter them.”

It does sound nice. But just in case you forgot the publication that is reporting this, here's a look back at their previous two Michael Jackson covers ...

In the most hilarious wedding rumor we've heard in some time, In Touch Weekly is reporting in its new issue that Jon Gosselin and Hailey Glassman are engaged.

Wow. And we thought OK! Magazine's story about Debbie Rowe demanding $100 million in exchange for giving up custody of Michael Jackson's kids was absurd.

According to this reputable celebrity news source, Jon and his new party animal girlfriend decided to tie the knot after he proposed on their trip to St. Tropez.

Reportedly, the couple is already planning the wedding and entertaining the idea of getting hitched in Las Vegas. We're definitely holding our breath for that.

An "insider" told the magazine that the Jon & Kate Plus 8 papa gave Hailey a $180,000 engagement ring featuring four black diamonds surrounding a skull.

While that does sound like the sort of thing a d-bag such as Jon Gosselin might pick out, there is no way he is possibly engaged to Hailey Glassman, since:

• His divorce proceedings with Kate Gosselin are barely underway, making it impossible to legally marry Hailey anytime soon even if he wanted to.
• This would torpedo any chance of Jon & Kate Plus 8 coming back on the air, and face it, dude has eight mouths to feed and needs the money.
• Appealing as it may be to date someone who is the complete opposite of grating wife Kate, no way Jon marries this complete ditz. No way.

Just a few hours ago, we reported on a serious of stories claiming something to the effect of a deal being offered to Debbie Rowe by Michael Jackson's family.

The details are not confirmed, but reputable sources claim that the late singer's family would pay Debbie pay her $3-5 million in exchange for Rowe not contesting his mom Katherine Jackson's guardianship and full custody of Michael's children.

Debbie Rowe is the biological mother (probably) of Prince Michael, 12, and Paris Jackson, 11, but she has had little if any contact with them in recent years.

Jackson's will states that Katherine gets full custody of Prince and Paris (along with Blanket, 7) and omitted Rowe, the late star's former spouse, altogether.

Rowe has said she will appear at Monday's custody hearing in L.A. Her intentions are not known ... except, apparently, by the ultra-reliable OK! Magazine.

She wants $100 million or the kids!

Apparently, $3-5 million wasn't good enough for OK! to sell large quantities of magazines, so they decided to boost the figure by $95-97 million. Details.

This headline is comical for numerous reasons, chief among them:

• Having attempted to sign away her parental rights before, and having no relationship with the kids, Debbie Rowe has no grounds for this demand.
• Even if she did seek out a settlement, there is little chance of her receiving even one-tenth that amount, given the singer's debts and obligations.
• Debbie Rowe may or may not be weighing options and hedging bets, but has communicated only through a lawyer. No one knows what she wants.
• OK!'s own blog links to an article in the New York Post claiming Rowe is negotiating a $4 million buyout to give up custody rights forever.

Then again, the magazine's previous cover was the infamous Michael Jackson death photo. So we suppose this actually is a step in the right direction.

We know celebrity weddings are big sellers for gossip magazines.

Naturally, Kendra Wilkinson wedding photos would be no exception.

That said, Us dropping $120,000 on exclusive rights to pictures of Kendra's wedding to Hank Baskett in L.A. Saturday seemed like a reasonable sum, if not low.

But Michael Jackson's death quashed plans to run them on the cover.

"They were trying to get out of paying so much because they have to put Michael on the cover," a source said. "But the documents were already signed."

Melissa Joan Hart, who was nearly hosed out of a People cover by Farrah Fawcett dying (the nerve of some people with terminal cancer) can sympathize.

A rep for Us said, "The wedding pictures were purchased after Michael died."

In any case, we don't expect the lovebirds care too much. They are on their honeymoon and likely focused strictly on boning. Congrats, Kendra and Hank!

After California authorities issued four child-labor law violations against Radar Online for videotaping Nadya Suleman's octuplets, attorney Gloria Allred held (of course) a press conference Tuesday to discuss the impact of the citations.

"Because Nadya Suleman has chosen to commercially exploit these babies, she and those with whom she has contracts must follow the law that is there for their protection," Allred said. "If the parents and the media do not protect them, others will."

Allred has long been slamming Octomom for putting her children in danger, and claims that the mother of 14 only cares about them "when cameras are rolling."

The loudmouth lawyer may be a publicity fiend in her own right, but she does not make awful points. In May, she filed a petition against Nadya Suleman and has worked with California's investigation to protect the financial interests of the babies.

Regarding celebrity gossip site Radar Online, California Labor Commissioner Angela Bradstreet said that it failed to take out the required permits before taping two of the octuplets - Noah and Isaiah - without safeguards to protect their welfare.

Attorney Gloria Allred has made it her mission to take down Nadya Suleman, a.k.a. Octomom, as well as her unofficial mouthpiece, celeb gossip site Radar Online.

She alleges the site taped the infants at hours and for periods of time banned by state regulations and failed to provide a supervisor to watch over them.

"These babies were put at risk, exposed to conditions violaying California labor laws," Bradstreet said. "In this case, we're dealing with premature babies."

The four violations - which could carry penalties up to $3,000 - occurred on March 17. They involve the first videos of the newborns when they came home.

Octomom was also hit with a child labor lawsuit in May.

Radar Online, which has posted more than 100 items about Nadya Suleman and her kids - said that like other newsgathering organizations, it is not required to obtain permits and is not restricted to certain hours in its journalistic pursuits.

Nadya has admitted to ruining the kids' lives but seems to have no qualms about being a complete drain on society and milking all the attention she can.

Seriously, Star ought to start publishing itself as fan fiction.

According to the venerable celebrity gossip tabloid, whose writers really need a raise, after making secret plans for a 1 a.m. rendezvous, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston got together at a New York City hotel and spent two hours - alone!

In a "blockbuster exclusive" - which is pretty easy to snag when you make up the story - Star reveals, thanks to a tell-all interview with the driver who brought Jen to the Gramercy Park Hotel, that the ex-couple went to great lengths not to be seen.

This explains why there were no photos of Jen and Brad together ... just a cover featuring two separate photos made to look like they were together.

"It was well planned so no one would see them," says the anonymous driver, who claims that the pair spent more than two hours alone together in the back of the Gramercy's nearly deserted 18th floor Private Roof Club and Garden.

"They were really careful not to be spotted."

This isn't the first time Brad has engaged in a made-up rendezvous concocted by Star Magazine that ended with him getting to see Jennifer Aniston nude.

They were not even remotely shuttled around New York City in a black SUV on April 23, sipping Starbucks and chatting in separate cities with other people.

Knowing how Angelina Jolie reacted when she first caught Brad talking to Jen on the phone recently, insiders say she's not going to be happy about this.

Well, she probably be wouldn't if it were true anyway.

"When Angelina finds out about this reunion, she'll go ballistic," says a fictitious source, assessing the situation with great expertise and wisdom.

There's a new celebrity war raging. Well, a celebrity news war.

Us Weekly has launched an offensive against InTouch Weekly, using two full pages of their new issue to rip their rivals' bogus Brangelina gossip over the years.

Us reproduced 21 InTouch covers dating back to 2005, then shreds the fake stories one by one, killing its celebrity gossip counterpart over their articles.

Some of which are pretty great. At least three wedding reports and five accounts of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie splitting up, with some inventive Jennifer Aniston stories tossed in for good measure, made it into the collage of lies.

InTouch fired back: "We are flattered that our competition pays so much attention to InTouch that they were willing to devote a 2-page spread to us."

Mmm. They've got a point there, but come on, look at these headlines. After you've blatantly lied 17 times, doesn't the 18th fail to carry the same weight?

All we know is somewhere, Star Magazine is celebrating for not being called out.
