Wouldn't it be great if every time one of our favorite celebrities had a meltdown, Hayden Panettiere were there to weigh in on it?

Similarly, if every time a celebrity were asked a question about Sarah Silverman, the foul-mouthed comedian magically appeared?

Well, Hayden Panettiere was at LAX last night, returning from the VMAs in Las Vegas, when celebrity news photographers started asking her about - what else - Britney Spears' awful VMA performance and Sarah Silverman's jokes.

Regarding Silverman's effect on Spears, Hayden just turned around and said, "You can go ask her yourself, she's right there!"

Sure enough, there she was! What a neat trick! You don't see cheerleader Claire Bennet pulling off anything that cool on Heroes.

The photographer then went over and asked Sarah Silverman if she thought she was hard on Britney Spears.

"I hope not," she replied, simply.

Asked if she thought her routine (calling her kids mistakes, making references to Britney's oft-exposed vagina) threw Britney off, Sarah explained, "Since I didn't do any of my jokes until my performance, it couldn't possibly have."

Another Britney Spears excuse out the window. Sorry, Chris Crocker. We know you were holding out hope that this one was true.

T.H. Gossip Correction: When we declared that Britney Spears' performance at the VMAs was panned universally, we were mistaken. One person is still fond of Spears - and off his/her medication hating on the celebrity news media for bashing her.

On YouTube, Chris Crocker passionately defends Brit - and herself, promising that the display of emotion below (which has to be seen to be believed) is real.

"Yes, I was REALLY crying, you f*%king morons," he/she (we can't tell) writes. "The one time I'm NOT acting- everyone says I am. I filmed this window lighting which washes out my face- if the video is watched full screen I am clearly crying, a$$holes."

Okay then. Without further ado, you gotta peep this...

This hysterical, distraught Britney Spears fanatic, who should really consider enlisting a whole team of psychologists, ASAP, implores: "How f*%king dare anyone out there make fun of Britney after all she's been through!?"

She has, indeed, been through a lot. Like parading around with no underwear at clubs. Girl deserves a break. How could anyone make light of such a thing.

We take it all back. Happy now, Chris Crocker?

Yes, the commando queen is back at it again, treating us to another fine upskirt display after her universally maligned VMAs performance on Sunday.

What else would you expect from the former pop star than to go out partying at the Bellagio in Vegas and show off her hairless axe wound once again.

She knows it's been a whole week and a half since she gave us a good shot of her wearing no pants. We appreciate your concern for our well being, Brit.

The newest pictures of Spears with no pants circulating around the Internet speak for themselves. The only questions:

1. Which has more hair: Jayden James' head, or his mom's vagina?
2. Which was more bare: Britney's lack of caring during the VMAs, or her baby factory?
3. In the next few months, which are we more likely to see: a high-selling Britney Spears album, or pubic hair?

Rarely has a live performance been as universally panned and ridiculed as when Britney Spears took the stage at last night's MTV Music Video Awards.

Spears is reportedly reeling after her first major public appearance in four years, in which she donned silver and black sparkly underwear and knee-high black boots to mail in her new single "Gimme More."

Fans were in hysterics, critics claimed she looked disinterested and unfit, and her fellow celebrities seemed to agree.

Speaking backstage after the event, the great Akon said, "That could have been better. She needed to focus more. She looked nervous and I think the pressure got to her."

Common added, "I think it didn't seem like she wanted to be there. There wasn't any spark, it didn't feel like life was there."

Kanye West said, "I have no words."

As if that weren't enough, Britney also had to endure withering remarks from comedian Sarah Silverman during the ceremony.

She sarcastically remarked, "Was that incredible? Britney Spears. Wow. She is amazing. She is 25 years old and she's already accomplished everything she's going to accomplish in her life. It's mind-blowing."

Silverman also called Brit's sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James, "the most adorable mistakes," and brought up the fun topic of Britney's shaved crotch.

The New York Post may have summed it up best: "[Britney Spears] jiggled like Jell-O and didn't seem to care that she danced like she had a load in her pants."

It was a hell of a run, one that began with an adorable Catholic school girl teasing her way into our hearts in the "Baby, One More Time..." video.

But Britney Spears' career officially came to an end this evening.

There's nothing left in the tank. Leading off tonight's MTV Video Music Awards, Britney Spears "sang" her new single, "Gimme More." She lip-synched it (badly), which would have been okay had there been any semblance of dance moves or theatrics. Not so.

All we saw tonight was a limp, uninterested, uninspired Britney Spears, lacking the pizzazz, energy, choreography and all-out hotness that made her famous.

It's a sad day when a performer as dynamic as Spears can no longer dance or even pretend to sing her own songs. But that day is this day. So weak.

Even that body is reduced to a shell of its former self, clearly showing signs of two births. Host Sarah Silverman even joked, "Have you seen Britney's kids? They're so cute! Almost as cute as that hairless vagina they popped out of!"

Not to worry, though. With that outfit she sported tonight, Spears served notice that she's ready for the next phase of her career... Cinemax. Late night.

Diddy and the lead performer for tonight's Video Music Awards chilled - and drank, according to their faces below - in Las Vegas over the weekend.

At one point, while a group of celebrities hung out in Pure Nightclub, the rap mogul gave Brit a shout-out, declaring that the singer deserved respect because she had gone through some hard times but "she keeps her head up."

Hear that, Vanessa Hudgens? Nude pics, schmude pics. Just keep your head up.

There actually is news this week aside from Vanessa Hudgens nude pictures.

For example, we already knew Britney Spears would be performing at Sunday night's Video Music Awards.

But now we know a lot more about the performance: TMZ is reporting that the train wreck will begin the show with "Gimme More," the new song that starts with: "It's Britney, bitch!"

The act will include a slew of dancers and aerialists. During the rehearsal, Jayden James' mom was still working in some tricky choreography.

The performance culminates with Britney doing a "trust fall" into the arms of her backup dancers. And we all know how that sort of thing ended last time.

Celebrity gossip site TMZ has learned that attorney Gloria Allred is on her way to court regarding the Britney Spears / Kevin Federline custody fight.

Allred will reportedly inform the judge that she has a secret witness who wants to testify at the September 17 custody hearing.

Allred plans to tell the judge the witness is "intimidated" and concerned about revealing his/her identity (though reports say it's a he).

TMZ's prediction: Gloria is going to get her publicity seeking rear end unceremoniously booted out of the hearing. Tuesday, K-Fed's lawyer, Mark Vincent Kaplan, also told Judge Scott Gordon that he had a "secret" witness.

Judge Gordon said, unequivocally "We don't do secret witnesses." Do Gloria and MVK have the same "secret" witness? Signs point to yes.

Meanwhile, Britney Spears' lawyer, celebrity divorce kingpin Laura Wasser, tells TMZ exclusively: "With all due respect to Ms. Allred, she's attempting to bring her own ring to what was already a three ring circus."

We just hope Brit shows up to court in no underwear.

One of the songs - in fact, the first - leaked to Perez Hilton from Britney Spears' new album is causing a little bit of controversy.

And the discussion isn't centered around how bad Spears' singing is on "Baby Boy," the ridiculous, nasally slow jam making the online rounds.

It's whether Britney Spears or someone in the struggling singer's camp / management team ripped the song off somebody else.

Kim Ross, a pop/soul singer from New York City has a song called "Beautiful Lies" - which she claims was written almost two years ago. She published it on her MySpace page (click to listen) in April.

You'll notice it sounds strikingly like Britney's "Baby Boy" if not nearly identical. Below is an unofficial, fan-made video featuring Britney's version of the song (meshed with some unrelated, hot pics of Spears from the olden days).

Actually... call it a comeback. All she's done in recent years is parade around with no pants, go to rehab, get divorced and crank out a pair of rugrats.

We are talking, of course, about Britney Spears, who MTV confirms will be performing the opening number at the MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas this Sunday. Spears is set to sing "Gimme More," the new single from her forthcoming album.

In preparation for the show, the pop star has been boned repeatedly by worked with illusionist Criss Angel on "some of the moments of the performance." 

Jesse Ignjatovic, the executive producer of the 2007 MTV VMAs, said it was important to secure Britney Spears for the big show's opening number.

"I guess, looking back, we've had a great history with her," he said. "I wanted to start the show in a very big, dramatic way, and she's the one to do that. She'll captivate everyone, and set the tone for the rest of the night. There's no one better."

Spears does indeed have a history at the VMAs. Like the Kennedy assassination, we all remember where we were when she carried that python on stage.

Though a Justin Timberlake source claims rumors of a Timberlake-Spears duet are "patently false," fans should still expect to be surprised.

"She's planning it to be a big comeback performance," a Britney Spears inside source says, adding that the goal is to make it "shocking."
