Makeup is a powerful tool for transformation. It's also a lightning rod for discussion on the web, where the no makeup revolution has become en vogue.

To wit, a set of stark "before" and "after" makeup photos posted on Reddit have brought the question up for debate: Is makeup a good or bad thing?

Redditor water_anus posted two side-by-side photos of a woman, seemingly heavily-done makeup and hair on the right and no styling at all on the left.

The caption: "Make-up. That's it." This posting quickly went viral and has opened up debate amongst Reddit users and beyond on a number of levels.

From criticisms of her unsmiling face to praise for the masterful makeup skills to discussion over the merits of wearing makeup in general, it's got it all.

Curvy Girl Lingerie is in the running to win a free television commercial at this year's Super Bowl as part of Intuit’s Small Business Big Game contest.

Curvz

Curvy Girl, along with thousands of other small businesses, is currently vying for online votes to make it into the top 20 and, eventually, the winning slot.

The lingerie company's main competitor at the moment is NORML, a marijuana advocacy group, according to Curvy Girls owner Chrystal Bougon.

"No matter how you feel about marijuana, there's just a higher percentage of game viewers that resonate with sexy, confident women," she said in a statement.

"We think our message will resonate with more of the Super Bowl's audience."

Jennifer Garner, 41, looks beautiful and forever young on the cover of Allure, yet she talks as if she's been around forever and is totally washed up.

In explaining why she and Oscar-winning husband Ben Affleck don't work together, she says she doubts people want to see them as a duo on screen.

"People see paparazzi shots of us all the time," the woman Allure dubs the "Action Babe Next Door" says. "There's no mystery. People are sick of us."

America is sick of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner? This is the first we've heard of it. Still, she's careful not to attend every Hollywood event with him.

A recent survey revealed that a third of women sleep with makeup on at least twice a week, and that the effects of doing so are less than stellar.

So for a month, one woman decided to test that theory by applying make-up as normal and never taking it off. The results, as you'd expect, were horrible:

Makeup Impact

By the end, experts said her skin had aged by a decade.

She allowed herself a "cursory wash in the shower every morning," but no cleansing products and nothing before bed. The photos speak for themselves.

Not all of that damage is permanent, though some research suggests this may age one's faces by more than two days for every night that it happens.

At the Annual Watermill Center Summer Benefit at The Watermill Center on Saturday in Water Mill, N.Y., the ARTPOP artiste turned heads in all black.

Rocking a new nose ring - a striking septum piercing, at that - along with bleached eyebrows and raven hair, this is a far cry from her usual wild looks.

Whether it's Lady Gaga nude photos or head-turning attire, she certainly knows how to create buzz for her new single (August 19) and album (November 11).

In an interview from December that's going viral this week, an emotional Dustin Hoffman shares how the film Tootsie and his character, Dorothy Michaels, came to be.

The 1982 film was both funny and touching. It focused on a struggling actor who can't get a gig and decides to become a woman to see if that helps.

Hilarity ensued, but to Hoffman, it was more than just a comedy.

The two-year process of getting into his character and seeing how life would be different for her changed his perceptions of female beauty forever.

Three decades later, he tears up talking about it.

As a "woman," he felt he was basically shunned because he wasn't "beautiful" in the traditional sense - something we saw this week with Marion Bartoli.

Meet “normal” Barbie!

Using a 3-D computer model, an artist created photos of the classic Mattel doll using the proportions of the average 19-year-old American woman.

Here's what a "real" Barbie would look like:

Artist Nickolay Lamm of MyDeals (dot) com created the rendering of Barbie as your average girl, not the tall, impossibly skinny version sold for decades.

Demi Lovato praised the "new" Barbie on Twitter, and based on the reaction these drawings have received on the web, she likely won't be the last to.

Dove has released a new viral ad campaign entitled "Camera Shy," a follow-up to the brand's successful and similar "Real Beauty Sketches."

The common theme: Women tend to be uncomfortable about their appearances.

While the tone of the Dove spot, like the previous one, is relatively light, it makes a fairly heavy point when it comes to camera-shyness:

"When did you stop thinking you were beautiful?"

Yes, Burger King now offers a hands-free Whopper holder.

But a fast food chain in Brazil tried to make an actual difference in people's lives this March.

In honor of International Women's Day, the restaurant Spoleto handed out mirrors to female customers and told them their order would be comped as long as they could say with confidence: I'm beautiful.

Pretty cool, right? A video documenting the day just went online. Check it out now:

This experiment is part of a new trend of businesses engaging with female empowerment as a type of advertising.

Last month, for example, Dove released a "Real Beauty" campaign that asked women to describe themselves to a sketch artist. It became a viral sensation.
