Brazilian police now say boxer Arturo Gatti hanged himself with a bag strap that he tied around a wooden staircase column seven feet off the ground.

Milena Saraiva, a spokeswoman for police in the northeastern city of Recife, says police first thought Gatti was strangled by wife Amanda Rodrigues.

They were led to believe this because his body was found on the floor.

Amanda Carine Barbosa Rodrigues was arrested but will not be charged.

An autopsy report indicated Gatti was suspended off the ground for three hours early July 11, however. An analysis found marks on the staircase column.

Arturo Gatti was found several hours later by his 23-year-old Brazilian wife, Amanda Rodrigues, who had been held in custody but was freed yesterday.

Police officially ruled the former welterweight champion's death a suicide.

With the sports world still reeling from the death of Steve McNair at the hands of mistress Sahel Kazemi, another tragic murder mystery has come to light.

Brazilian authorities detained Amanda Rodrigues, wife of former boxing champion Arturo Gatti, and formally accused her Sunday of killing him at a resort.

Amanda Rodrigues was taken into custody by officials after contradictions in the police interrogation and presented a formal accusation against her.

Prosecutors will decide whether to press charges shortly.

Rodrigues, 23, denies any involvement in her husband’s death. According to some publications, she is also known by Amanda Carine Barbosa Rodrigues.

She was the first to find the slain boxer’s body early Saturday inside the vacation condo they were renting at the Porto de Galinhas resort in northeast Brazil.

Arturo Gatti, a former junior welterweight champion, was apparently strangled with the strap of a purse, which was found at the scene with blood stains.

Police said Rodrigues, a Brazilian, could not explain how she spent nearly 10 hours inside the residence without noticing that Arturo Gatti was already dead.

Amanda Rodrigues told cops she had a fight with Gatti after dinner Friday night and he pushed her to the ground during the altercation, causing minor injuries.

She told authorities Gatti was drunk and that a third party likely committed the crime after he went to the apartment by himself. Witnesses had reported to police that the couple was indeed fighting and that Arturo Gatti was drunk.

Authorities were told the couple was extremely jealous of each other and that Gatti constantly complained about her clothing when she traveled to Brazil.

They had planned to spend one month in Brazil on vacation. The couple’s one-year-old son, who was unhurt, is currently being cared for by Rodrigues’ sister.

Gatti was just 37. His battles with Micky Ward branded him one of the most exciting fighters of a generation. He retired in 2007 with a record of 40-9 and 31 KOs.
