Aretha Franklin has thrown her (often eccentric) hat into the American Idol judging ring.

With Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez both officially off the Fox competition, the iconic singer is the latest artist to make her interest in the panel known. CNN reports Franklin sent it an email expressing as much.

Rumors of who will take over on Season 12 will likely continue to circulate all summer long.

So far, big names such as Adam Lambert, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey have all been discussed.

Franklin, of course, would bring serious cred to the program. She's an 18-time Grammy Award winner and was named by Rolling Stone as the greatest female singer of all-time.

Due to leg spasms and muscle pain, Aretha Franklin was unable to attend Whitney Houston's funeral on Saturday, canceling not only her appearance but a planned performance in honor of her goddaughter, as well.

But the late legend was very much in Franklin's thoughts the evening before, as she played a concert for fans at Radio City Music Hall in New York City and honored Houston with a pair of covers.

“Remember the hits and forget the misses,” Aretha told the crowd. “I’ll always look back and remember her singing..."

And, with that, Franklin broke into a rendition of "I Will Always Love." Watch it and a version of "The Greatest Love of All" now:

In the wake of Whitney Houston's death, the public has heard numerous responses from those that knew the legend well (Ray J) to know those speculating wildly in order to increase ratings (Nancy Grace).

But few were closer to Houston than Aretha Franklin, the artist's godmother. She spoke to The Today Show this morning about actually hearing the tragic news.

"I had just finished watching George Clooney in The Descendants and I flipped back to the regular TV and maybe two minutes after I did that, it came across the screen. I just jumped off the side of the bed [and said] 'What?' This could not be. What is this? I just said, 'Oh my, God.'"

Franklin said she had seen previews for Sparkle, a film Houston had recently completed shooting, and was confident the movie would lead to a comeback.

"She looked fresh, she looked healthy and she looked gorgeous," the iconic singer said. "I thought, 'Yes, she has conquered her challenges and she's on the way.'"

Aretha Franklin, who announced January 3 that she was engaged to Willie Wilkerson and would wed this summer, released a statement Monday with a change of plans.

"Regretfully, To Our Friends and Supporters: Will and I have decided we were moving a little too fast," said the Queen of Soul and her her "forever friend" William.

"There were a number of things that had not been thought through thoroughly," the 69-year-old Franklin added. "There will be no wedding at this time."

"We will not comment on it any further because of the very personal and sensitive nature of it. We appreciate all of the many well wishes from friends."

The statement was signed "Aretha and Will."

Franklin is famously private about her personal life, which is why her engagement to William Wilkerson came as such a surprise to the public recently.

She's previously declined to discuss whether she was even in a relationship. Presumably, and hopefully, the longtime friends will remain that way.

"Will and I are close," Franklin said recently of her companion. "We stayed close and he escorts me on occasion and we're just cool. We're real cool."

Real good to know.

Franklin, who lost 85 pounds last year after a health scare, said "I feel fabulous."

Adds the singer herself of the upcoming nuptials to Willie Wilkerson: "We're looking at June or July for our date and no, I'm not pregnant, LOL!"

A source familiar with the situation told The Detroit News about Franklin's condition. Detroit's Fox 2 news also attributing that information to a relative.

Aretha Franklin has not confirmed reports of her diagnosis.

The National Enquirer posted a story on the music legend's reported illness earlier, prompting some of the speculation regarding the Queen of Soul.

Last month, Franklin announced she was canceling all concerts and appearances through May on the orders of her doctors, but did not elaborate.
