Even Ron Burgundy is no match for Smaug ... but then again he is a formidable force as a mythical dragon portrayed by master thespian Benedict Cumberbatch.

The long-awaited Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues was unable to steal the box-office crown from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug this weekend.

Anchorman 2 has made $61.3 million in the first five days of its release, but earned a modest $26.8 million over the weekend, less than the 2004 original.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, meanwhile, made $31.5 million over the weekend, raising its overall total to $127.5 million through two weeks.

Thanks to overseas business, the second installment in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings prequel trilogy is likely to match its predecessor's $1 billion finish.

Oscar hopeful American Hustle got off to a great start with $19.1 million as it opened nationwide after a very limited run in New York and Los Angeles.

Anchorman 2 reviews. 99% of the time, they're right every time.

So relive the very best Anchorman quotes, spray on some Panther cologne and scroll down for more...

For almost every aspect of the movie I want to criticize, there is a corresponding defense. - The Arizona Republic

While I'm glad "Anchorman" is back - we need a little levity in this year of heavy films - I do wish it were better. - The Los Angeles Times

The movie cleverly spoofs the 24-hour TV news cycle, as well as sexism and racism in the workplace. Not every scene is equally funny, of course, but most of the comic antics generate laughs. - USA Today

The legendary Ron Burgundy, portrayed by Will Ferrell, anchored the entire KXMB evening news in Minot, N.D. on Saturday, and it was kind of a big deal.

North Dakotans may have been shocked to see the San Diego mustached newsman in the anchor's chair, but there he was, for the full half hour telecast!

The CBS-TV affiliate began with a quick video of shoppers eschewing big box stores and opting to support smaller businesses on Small Business Saturday.

As soon as that story, read by weekend anchor Amber Schatz, was finished, the cameras showed her at the desk along with her surprise co-host.

Sporting his trademark burgundy blazer and familiar voice, he declared "I'm Ron Burgundy, thank you for joining us tonight" before doing his thing.

Forget eating an entire wheel of cheese. THIS is impressive.

Paul Gerke of KIVI in Boise, Idaho celebrated Halloween yesterday by doing his entire sports segment as Ron Burgundy.

Rarely breaking character, the reporter mixed in local highlights with beloved Anchorman quotes (one quarterback was admired for his collection of "leather-bound books" and an apartment that "smells of rich mahogany") while donning a fake mustache maroon jacket.

You can hear Gerke's colleagues cracking up in the background... and you really can't blame them.

It's a very classy performance all around. Watch now:

And then check out the latest Anchorman 2 trailer, as this wildly anticipated sequel comes out on December 20.

In the market for something cold and delicious to snack on while you watch? Allow us to suggest Scotchy Scotch Scotch.

It tastes a lot better than a whole wheel of cheese.

Good news, Ron Burgundy: You don't need to come home tonight and just eat a whole wheel of cheese.

Ben and Jerry's has announced a new ice cream flavor that honors this legendary newscaster and which serves to promote Anchorman 2. It's called "Scotchy Scotch Scotch." Naturally.

“Scotchy, Scotch, Scotch is a delicious ice cream and I hope Ben and Jerry consider my other suggestions,” Burgundy said in a press release. “Malt liquor marshmallow, well liquor bourbon peanut butter, and cheap white wine sherbet.”

Ron Burgundy and the rest of the news team had their moment in the sun with their recent Anchorman 2 magazine cover, but now we are getting more images from the film itself.

Christina Applegate tries to compete in the fur collar race but I think we can all agree, she has no chance at beating the beauty that is Ron Burgundy.

Of course fur collars have nothing on Wes Mantooth's hat.

Burgundy and his news team return to the big screen on December 20th!

There's always that one person that looks at the wrong camera. No surprise that when it comes to Anchorman 2, that person is Brick Tamland.

"I'm going to do the thing that God put Ron Burgundy on this Earth to do. Have salon-quality hair and read the news." - Ron Burgundy

The official trailer for Anchorman 2 has arrived, and Ron Burgundy and cohorts are ready to do God's work. This time, at a 24/7 cable news network!

Yes. Ron (Will Ferrell), Brick (Steve Carell), Brian (Paul Rudd) and Champ (David Koechner) are off to the Big Apple, leaving San Diego behind.

Not to worry, though. Burgundy still proves, time and again, that you can take a man out of the '70s, but you can't take the '70s out of the man.

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues hits theaters December 20. Buy the original Anchorman DVD, then watch the trailer for the sequel in anticipation!
