Jackie Gordon and Ames Brown's surprising, heartwarming exit from Bachelor Pad made more than a few eyes unexpectedly tear up Monday night.

They seemed to be smitten with each other, a terrific match, and too normal for the show in general. America had really high hopes for these two!

Sadly, it's already over between them.

"Um, well, we had a great time on the show and we chose love over money in the competition," said Brown, 31, a New York portfolio manager.

"However, we are not still dating. We enjoyed every moment we had together, but after a little while, we split up. Nothing too exotic about it."

Truth be told, the lovebirds only lasted a couple of weeks after leaving the series, he said, adding, "We just maybe weren't the ideal match."

Gordon, a 27-year-old artist/teacher, called Ames a "wonderful person" who "made me feel very comfortable," but suggested he dumped her.

You wouldn't imagine Bachelor Pad would make you tear up at the end (from genuine emotion, not laughter) but there's a first time for everything.

The season's second episode featured the usual fare - drama, boring dates, people taking things way too seriously - but also a truly romantic moment.

By the end, Jake Pavelka vs. Vienna Girardi and Kasey Kahl felt more like a sideshow. You can thank Ames Brown and Jackie Gordon for that.

Jake bears the brunt of the ladies' chicken embryos, but takes it in stride. When Erica gets hit with nearly EVERY egg, though? Harsh. Minus 9.

Why not just throw the eggs at the middle of the pack if the answer doesn't actually matter? Big Brother always has a trivia component. Minus 2.

Minus another 4 for the guys having to throw underhand. Come on, at least let Jake wind up for a fastball at Vienna the Cheater. Three times!

With Ashley Hebert engaged as of The Bachelorette season finale, J.P. Rosenbaum is officially spoken for. But four good catches from this season are not.

Will one of them be selected as the star of The Bachelor this winter?

Already a fan favorite, runner-up Ben Flajnik would surely be a strong choice, having won over viewers on the finale and After the Final Rose special last night.

Ames Brown would be great, too. Everyone loves Ames! Don't discount the Greek God, Constantine Tzortis, either. Ashley even suggested Ryan Park somehow.

Of course, as we saw last time when runner-up Chris Lambton turned down the gig, ABC could go in a different direction. Third time's the charm, Brad?

We kid ... mostly. Stranger things have happened. Odds are that the show goes with one of these four, however. Which, if any, would you like to see? Vote:

Who should star as The Bachelor next season?

Based on the trailer that aired on last night's Men Tell All special, Season 2 of Bachelor Pad is shaping up to be one of the best/worst shows in reality TV history.

Seriously, it's guaranteed to elicit one or both of these responses:

1. This show represents all that is wrong with society today!
2. This is so bad, it's must-see TV!

Think Big Brother only with more hormones, bigger egos, pre-existing feuds and a hodgepodge of some of the most memorable Bachelor/Bachelorette castoffs:

Jake Pavelka is on it. Need we say more? Fame whoring at its finest for the cast, and guilty-pleasure, brain cell-eroding drama at its best for the viewers.

The 18th and final contestant on the upcoming season of ABC's Bachelor Pad has been revealed: It's this week's Bachelorette castoff, Ames Brown!

We know. Didn't see that coming.

ABC withheld the identity of the last contestant, only revealing that it was a male who appeared on the current season of The Bachelorette.

Conventional wisdom suggested the villainous Bentley Williams would be a good fit, as would ... any of the guys remaining besides Ames.

The portfolio manager is a terrific guy, don't get us wrong. In fact, that's why it seems like an odd fit with the likes of Jake Pavelka and Vienna Girardi.

You just fear that he'll be eaten alive by these people ... on the flip side, he should easily be able to outwit them. But does he even need $250,000?

In any case, Ames joins fellow Bachelorette contestants William Holman and Blake Julian from this season. The show premieres Monday, August 8.

The week before that is The Bachelorette finale, with Ben, JP and Constantine still in the running. With Ames gone, who should Ashley choose?

Four hometown dates. Three roses.

Those were the stakes Monday for Ashley Hebert, who narrowed the field to three and left one guy devastated after her cross-country tour.

The Bachelorette spoilers accurately predicted which one got the axe, but that didn't make it any less compelling - or sad - to watch unfold.

From a picnic under a magnolia tree to a trip to the family restaurant, the guys pulled out all the stops to win over Ashley. But would it be enough?

Romance. Resentment. Tears. The Bachelorette brought it all last night, with Ashley Hebert narrowing the season's field to the lucky final four suitors.

The eliminations were a bit surprising, but there is no clear favorite heading into the hometown dates, which must always be referred to as such.

So who got the golden ticket home and who got the chop? Who whined way too much and who handled their ouster remarkably poorly?
