Give us Kelly Clarkson standing at a microphone, simply singing, and we'd be thrilled. The original American Idol possesses that kind of sheer talent.

But the artist took to the stage at last night's American Music Awards in a shiny, beautiful dress and was flanked by a series of brass instruments, along with back-up dancers that took their cue from the early 20th century musical Newsies.

Chart-topping friends Katy Perry and Rihanna both performed at Sunday's American Music Awards. Who will perform better in a test of style supremacy?

Katy looked adorable as ever on the red carpet, so much so that we can't help wonder if that dress may have helped salvage this rendition of "Firework."

Considering Justin Bieber was named Artist of the Year, it's safe to say the American Music Awards skewed toward a younger generation last night.

But try telling that to Bon Jovi. The veteran band is releasing a Greatest Hits album this winter, replete with four new songs. It performed one of them at the ceremony over the weekend, transitioning from "What Do You Got?" to  ''You Give Love a Bad Name'' and ''It's My Life."

We love Katy Perry personally and think some of her songs are really catchy, but her live singing skills were a bit suspect at the American Music Awards.

It's hard to watch her rendition of "Firework" (below) and not think that, but that's just our opinion. What do you think? Did she knock it out of the park?
