At least Robbie Carrico has more time now to read about Britney Spears news.

The ex-boyfriend of that troubled singer was one of four American Idol contestants voted off the show last night. Viewers never bought Carrico's transformation from boy band singer to hard rocker.

Fans also gave the boot to Alaina Whitaker, Jason Yeager and Alex Lushington. When Whitaker (pictured below) heard her name called, she let out a loud cry.

"Sorry, this is so embarrassing," she told host Ryan Seacrest, who consoled her with a hug.

Alaina Whitaker isn't part of the final 16 on American Idol. David Archuleta, Michael Johns and Brooke White certainly are, however.

Many believe people Amanda Overmyer's hairstyle is a crime.

But it's nothing compared to the actual crime committed by this American Idol semifinalist: celebrity gossip site TMZ is reporting that Overmyer was arrested for DUI in October 2006.

That's just dangerous and irresponsible. Here's Amanda's mug shot:

The booking photo of Amanda Overmyer is a bit grainy. But check out clearer, crazier, more entertaining celebrity mug shots right now in our gallery full of them.

Last night on American Idol, the issue of which female put on the best performance was far from grey. In fact, it was black and white.

Brooke White!

Grady on Stage

The quiet crooner sat on a stool, strummed her guitar and performaned a perfect version of Carly Simon's "You're So Vain." Consider what Simon Cowell - the judge about whom that song could have been written - said about the audition:

I absolutely loved it. The absolute perfect song for you. It was one of the rare occasions where I felt the artist had genuinely chosen the song. It absolutely connected; I thought you sang it very well. The song didn't sound old-fashioned. This is why we put you through into the latter stages.

Take a look and a listen for yourself and let us know: is Brooke White now the female favorite?

Also earning praise last night from the judges were:

  • Kristy Lee Cook: Bounced back from last week with a rendition of "You're No Good" by Betty Everett that was a "100% improvement" from the prior week, according to Randy Jackson.
  • Carly Smithson: Simon didn't love the song choice of "Crazy on You" by Heart, but did tell the Irish singer that "I don't think any of these girls can touch you vocally."

Can any of the female American Idol contestants equal the awe-inspiring performance of David Archuleta last night? It seems unlikely.

But we can't wait to see Asiah Epperson, Carly Smithson and company try tonight.

Here are thumbnails of each of the remaining 10 semifinalists on the women's side of American Idol. Click on them now for larger versions - and be sure to visit The Hollywood Gossip tomorrow for a wrap up of their auditions...

On American Idol last night, Robbie Carrico was pretty much called a fraud by Randy Jackson. The show's resident dawg of a judge referred to Carrico's attempt to rock out with:

I don't know if the rock thing is really, really your thing... [Your voice] doesn't have enough grunt to really be like a rock voice...

We can only imagine, therefore, how Jackson would respond to this news about Robbie's attempt to be a hardcore rocker: he wears a wig!

According to TMZ, American Idol staffers are well aware of the fact that Carrico's long mane is as fake as Heidi Montag's breasts. There's just not much they can do or say about it.

In the end, a case of Robbie wigging out should have been expected long ago: he used to date Britney Spears.

None of them achieved the sort of response from the judges - and teenage girls in attendance - that David Archuleta did last night.

But the following American Idol men should at least feel safe booking a song for next week's semifinal show:

Chikezie: Sang "I Believe to My Soul" by Donny Hathaway. Simple outfit, laid back performance and less attitude than last week led to the following from Randy:

"Chikezie is back, America ... This is the guy we fell in love with. I've said this twice tonight, I'm so happy you're back. That was blazing, you were having fun, you were singing at ease, at will, you didn't care what was going on, That was hot ... You're in it to win it."

David Cook: Sang "All Right Now" by Free. Definitely a more believable rocker than Robbie Carrico, Cook elicited the following praise:

"You are the real deal, you know? You got it ... It was very smart, very fun, very relevant to who you are and I loved it.'

David Hernandez: Sag "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone," The Undisputed Truth. May not be able to continue flying under the radar after this performance. Even Simon gushed:

"This may surprise you, but in my opinion that was the best vocal of the night so far... I like the fact that when you are given some criticism, rather than sulking you treat it as a challenge... You've risen to the challenge ... I'm quite happy to hold my hand up and say I am a fan."

It doesn't take much to make Paula Abdul cry. Tears flow for this American Idol judge over her assistant purchasing the wrong shampoo. Or a broken remote control. Or a poorly mixed margarita.

Last night, however, it was the performance of American Idol contestant David Archuleta that left Abdul's mascara a mess.

Pia Toscano Pic

After the 17-year old sensation completed his rendition of John Lennon's "Imagine," Paula choked back the tears and said: "That was . . . one of the most moving performances I've ever heard. You're destined for super stardom."

Take a look. Take a listen. Let us know if you agree:

With just 20 contestants remaining on the seventh season of American Idol, it's time to chop down the list on our Power Poll.

With that in mind, here are the top five performers so far, according to our crack celebrity gossip staff:

Absolutely the Best

1. Asiah Epperson: We may be in the minority in anointing this singer as the leading contender, but no one else this season combines her poise, looks and vocal range. What a great name, too!

2. David Archuleta: The 17-year old has captured the hearts of America in a way Sanjaya Malakar could only dream about last season: an adorable sensation... who can actually carry a tune! Sign him up now for the finals.

3. Michael Johns: The only knock on this performer is that he's too established to be considered an American Idol. He's 29 old and has already fronted a band called The Rising. No matter to us. The handsome Aussie can wail.

4. Syesha Mercado: Another contestant with a winning name. Syesha has a much bigger voice than that of Epperson, but she's able to control it. Would love to see her tackle a ballad in order to determine full range.

5. Jason Castro: Apologies to Amanda Overmyer and Carly Smithson, either of whom could be in the spot. But Casto deserved props after taking the stage last week with his guitar and delivering a sweet, understated version of the Lovin' Spoonful hit ''Daydream."

Here's a look at the American Idol top 20. Who is your favorite? Leave a comment. Let us know.

Jason Yeager is a relatively unknown American Idol semifinalist.

This Grand Prairie, Texas-native hasn't received the same amount of air time as fellow male contestants such as Michael Johns and David Archuleta. Therefore, the following interview - courtesy of The Fort Worth Star-Telegram - ought to help fans get a better idea of what this singer is all about...

When the Dallas auditions came up, did somebody twist your arm to do it, or did you just jump for it?
I was about to turn 28, getting up there as far as the [Idol] age limit goes. I'd actually auditioned five years ago and got turned away. The very first preliminary round, they told me no. I swore the show off for a long time. Then just last year during the summertime, just on a whim, I was sort of curious to see when the next season was going to be starting and when the auditions were.

Oddly enough, two weeks later they were going to be in Dallas. They'd just posted the audition process online, and five minutes later I get an IM from a friend saying, 'Hey, there's an audition in Dallas for American Idol. You should go.' I thought, wow, that must be a sign.

Should Vanessa Hudgens be jealous of Amanda Overmyer? How about Syesha Mercado?

We only ask because Vanessa's boyfriend, Zac Efron, is admitting he has profound admiration for American Idol contestants such as the aforementioned pair from season seven.

"[The show] deals with regular people who really have a dream and like to perform," the High School Musical star told MTV recently. "I have such admiration for those guys â€" they go literally from zero to 60 in a matter of days and they handle it like champs… I couldn't have done that: go to the peak of your fame within a month of starting."

A photo of Zac Efron. Don't be afraid to swoon ladies. We won't blame you.

Efron says in past seasons he's gone down to watch American Idol live.

"A few years ago, I went, like, almost every week," he says. "It's a completely different experience live. You really get to see who is a good singer, and who can really captivate a crowd. And you can tell it's really influential on the judges' decisions."

Speaking of those judges, Zac calls Paula Abdul a "sweetheart." Perhaps Hudgens should be jealous of her instead.
