With American Idol having chosen its top 12 singers for the finals, we need to make our weekly Power Poll more of a challenge.

Choosing the top five contenders at this point in the competition would be listing almost half the remaining singers. And that's too easy.

Therefore, here's a look at the three American Idol hopefuls we think have the best chance of winning season seven:

1. David Archuleta: Can this 17-year old wonder kid go wire to wire as the favorite? He's given us no reason to think otherwise. Remember Melinda Doolittle last season, though, fans.

2. Brooke White: This might be wishful thinking, but White is a breath of fresh, folksy air. We've seen enough loud, diva-like singers over the year on Idol to get behind a pretty face who just sits on a stool, strums a guitar and makes beautiful music.

3. Carly Smithson: We could have placed either Michael Johns or Jason Castro in this spot, too, but Smithson gets the nod for her consistency. We also have a feeling the best is yet to come from this Irish crooner.

Who do you think will win American Idol?

MTV recently traveled to Murray, Utah, in order to speak with those who knew David Archuleta in high school.

Here's how a few friends of the American Idol favorite described the adorable 17-year old:

Big Mike Photo
  • Kellene Kim, a friend and classmate at Murray High, said she called Archuleta "Lettuce Boy." The reason?

"David has a tendency to not really listen, 'cause he kinda likes to sing to himself," Kim explained. "We were sitting around, just hanging out, talking about how someone had found a bug in their lettuce from a fast-food place, and [David] tunes in. He heard us, and he's like, 'What? But I love lettuce!' And so now we call him 'lettuce boy.' "

  • Mietra Aarabi told MTV News: "Music is David's life and always has been. When he's talking in just normal conversation, if anything reminds him of a song, he just starts randomly singing."
  • "Even if we were driving, he would have random songs come into his mind," echoed classmate Shantel Hansen. "I would be like, 'Turn left,' and he would start singing, 'To the left, to the left' [from Beyoncé's 'Irreplaceable']."
  • And the best part? He doesn't even know it, insists Dean Kaelin, who has been Archuleta's vocal coach for the better part of six years.

"I think he has absolutely no idea what a huge thing he is right now â€" it's not like he's trying to be impressive. He's just being himself and enjoying the songs. The old Jimmy Stewart, 'aw shucks'? Those are honest reactions. He just gets embarrassed from the attention. He thinks he's just this kid."

David Hernandez doesn't wanna discuss his stripper past. And we don't blame him.

As the American Idol finalist told Entertainment Weekly, he's just here to sing. Viewers can decide if that makes him worthy to remain on the show. So far, they've responded positively.

"I think America's judging us all off of our voices right now," Hernandez said at the American Idol Top 12 party in West Hollywood last night. "Obviously they were, because I'm still in the Top 12, thank God. So I'm not really concerned with what's going on [with those entertainment news reports]. I'm just focused on singing, because that's what I'm here to do."

David Hernandez has handled his recent controversy with grace and maturity.

And then there were 12.

American Idol announced its finalists last night, sending four hopefuls home and naming the following contestants as this season's best. Here are our odds for who will come out on top:

• David Archuleta, 1:6. With incredible vocals and gawky teen appeal, he's a bigger favorite than the Patriots were in the Super Bowl. Then again, how did that turn out?

• David Cook, 5:2: The success of Chris Daughtry should help Cook. Idol viewers may not wish to make the same mistake as they did with that rocker.

• Carly Smithson, 3:1: Sings like a seasoned professional, maybe because she was one. Not going home any time soon.

• Jason Castro, 4:1. May look asleep half the time, but appeals to the folkie types that strum their guitars at home until all hours of the night. You know who you are.

• Michael Johns, 9:2. Early favorite, has seemed to be coasting the last two weeks. Very attractive.

• Brooke White, 6:1: We might be placing her too high, out of hope and affection. But cute underdog has cleverly gone against the loud, diva grain. Love her laid back style.

• David Hernandez, 8:1: Rumors of a gay stripping past may actually help this contender. Places him in the news, people notice when he sings quite well.

• Ramiele Malubay, 10:1. Reminds us of former American Idol finalist Paris Bennett. Tiny frame, gigantic voice. A few semi-lewd photos on Facebook.

We're slightly frightened by Danny Noriega.

The singer was eliminated from American Idol last night and, based on the following video and the one we posted earlier in the week that involves Norgea wishing serious harm on your mother, who knows how he'll react to this ousting.

Farewell, Casey

Be very afraid...

We're a little afraid to hear what former co-workers of David Hernandez would say about that American Idol contestant.

But TMZ spoke to some of Carly Smithson's former co-workers San Diego Irish bar The Field. Here's what they had to say about the Irish singer:

  • Carly, who started out as a server and got promoted to bartender, is easy-going and good-natured.
  • Hr specialty was serving Guinness beer with hearts and shamrock shapes in the foam.
  • She loved making bacon-wrapped filet mignon. Sorry, PETA.

Even after a failed album on MCA Records in 2001, Smithson would often sing at the bar after her Saturday night shift.

How far can Carly Smithson go on American Idol? We'd wager that she makes the top six at least.

We don't know if David Hernandez is gay or not.

And we don't care one way or the other.

But we do know this much: if Hernandez is closer to Lance Bass than Brody Jenner, then some dude is really lucky.

Just look at this American Idol contestant topless!

Do you think David Hernandez will be eliminated from American Idol on the results show tonight? Who should be sent home?

After her over-the-top version of "Carry on Wayward Son" last week, Amanda Overmyer was the most likely female to be voted off American Idol this week.

But then she toned down her hair 'do (see below), belted out a more subdued version of "I Hate Myself For Loving You" by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts and was told by Simon Cowell that it was one of his "favorite performances of the entire competition."

In all, no contestant was universally panned by the judges last night. Though we're guessing Kady Malloy wasn't thrilled that Simon said she had no personality.

Here are a couple other performances that stood out:

  • We need to mention the audition of Carly Smithson - who sang "I Drove All Night" - if only to point out Paula Abdul's lame Randy Jackson impression when she told the Irish singer: "So, dude. Dude, let me tell you something. You are like a dependable dog." Who was in charge of Paula's meds last night?
  • Love was a Battlefield for Brooke White - and another acoustic performance was a battle she came out on top of last night. This crooner always remains true to who she is, as Simon raved: "I thought it worked, purely because it didn't have the band with you. Two weeks running, you've done a great performance."

Who was your favorite on American Idol last week? Who is going home tonight? Leave a comment. Let us know.

Unlike on the men's side, there's no clear cut favorite, female American Idol contestant. Not yet, anyway.

We're partial to Asiah Epperson and Brooke White, but can't wait to see who performs the best tonight, the final round of semifinal auditions.

Brooke White's tears come from the authentic, good soul that she is. Her heart was breaking because she was overwhelmed with the experience she had with the show and the gift that it brought.

I read some of this online this morning and just for the record, the rumors — they’re not true. She’s part of our family and we love her.
