American Horror Story: Freak Show is set in 1952.

But the FX series has taken some musical liberties over the first few episodes, with Jessica Lange having covered David Bowie’s “Life on Mars” and Sarah Paulson doing the same for Fiona Apple’s “Criminal."

Last night, meanwhile, on American Horror Story Season 4 Episode 3, Lange got her singing on once again.

This time, it was to Lana Del Rey’s “Gods & Monsters." How did she do? How does her version compare to the original? Listen for yourself and find out now:

According to the series storyline, this was such an epic number that it attracted freak-show urban myth Edward Mordrake (Wes Bentley), a deadly spirit with two faces.

Edward Mordrake is coming... for someone.

We met this mythical figure on American Horror Story Season 4 Episode 3, as he came very much alive on Halloween because Elsa dared to get up on stage and rehearse.

Via orders from the evil face on the back of his head, Mordrake must take a freak back with him to the other side.

But we learned last night that Ethel is not the one. So the question now hangs over this FX hit: Who will it be?

Viewers also met Emma Roberts as a con artist named Esmeralda on the latest installment of Ryan Murphy's anthology. She cozied up to Evan Peters' Jimmy.

Unlike past seasons of American Horror Story, the opening few episodes of Freak Show are slowly rolling out new characters bit by bit.

It's been a very effective strategy thus far, with each episode helping us get to know new members of the carnival and/or those with whom they'll be clashing.

On American Horror Story Season 4 Episode 3, that meant the introduction of Emma Roberts as Esmeralda, a pretend fortune teller who is working a con (along with Denis O'Hare's character) in order to infiltrate the Freak Show and find someone/something to bring back to a museum for big bucks.

She won over Elsa by claiming some mystery man was on the way to revive her career and she won over Jimmy by, well, being very pretty.

American Horror Story: Freak Show features a number, well, freaks this season.

There's a biker with deformed hands. There's a woman with two heads. And there's a hermaphrodite with three breasts.

But there's also a killer clown on the loose - and it's this character who is causing some problems for viewers around the country. Specifically, for clowns who are NOT killers.

American Horror Story Freak Show Clown

“Hollywood makes money sensationalizing the norm,” says Glenn Kohlberger, President of Clowns of America International, to The Hollywood Reporter. “They can take any situation, no matter matter how good or pure, and turn it into a nightmare.”

Dubbed "Twisty" and played by John Carroll Lynch, the clown has already committed many murders through just two American Horror Story: Freak Show episodes.

Who is Edward Mordrake?

That question will be answered on American Horror Story Season 4 Episode 3, the first part of a two-part Halloween episode.

The hour will continue to roll out new character, as the premiere of this FX sensation focused on Jessica Lange as Elsa Mars and Evan Peters as Jimmy Darling.

Then, on this week's installment, we met Michael Chiklis; Dell Toledo, a strong man with large muscles and an even bigger temper problem.

Next Wednesday, meanwhile, it will be time to get to know Emma Roberts as a fortune teller who captivates Jimmy. How will she react to the carnival of monsters in Florida?

Anyone who has watched The Shield (Editor's Note: Everyone should watch The Shield!) on FX, is well aware that Michael Chiklis knows how to portray a man with a temper problem.

And anyone who has seen American Horror Story Season 4 Episode 2 is now very much aware of what we mean.

The veteran actor made his debut on this frightening drama last night, coming on board as (VERY) strong man Dell Toledo, a veteran of the carnival game who arrived on the scene with his wife, Angela Bassett’s Desiree Dupree.

She's a three-breasted hermaphrodite, which makes Dell, in his own words, the "happiest man in the world."

It also makes him a killer, as a brief flashback gives us an idea of Dell's temper: he murders a man with his bare hands for sleeping with Desiree.

Where will Ryan Murphy take fans next?

FX viewers can now ask themselves that question after the network announced today that American Horror Story has been renewed for a fifth season.

Yes, already.

This is what happens after American Horror Story Season 4 Episode 1 becomes the most-watched telecast in FX history, racking up north of 13.3 million viewers when counting encore presentations.

American Horror Story: Freak Show is off and running scaring.

On American Horror Story Season 4 Episode 1, viewers were introduced to Jessica Lange as Elsa Mars, the German woman in charge of a carnival of... abnormal individuals.

We learned a great deal about Elsa on the premiere and we also met a bearded lady (played by Kathy Bates), conjoined twins (played by Sarah Paulson) and a disfigured biker (played by Evan Peter).

But plenty more freaks are on the way, from a fortune teller to a strong man to a hermaphrodite with three breasts.

Explained creator Ryan Murphy to Entertainment Weekly:

WARNING: Killer clowns ahead.

FX kicked off its latest installment of the award-winning American Horror Story last night, but this Freak Show-based version of the anthology got off to a different start than we expected.

Did we meet a few freaks? Oh yes.

The tiniest woman in the world is in the cast. As is Kathy Bates as a bearded woman... Evan Peters as a motorcycle rider with deformed hands (which allow him to easily pleasure a woman)... and Sarah Paulson as conjoined twins Dot and Bette.

The latter is a visual stunner, a character unlike any you've ever seen before and someone who should automatically win Paulson every Emmy.

These misplaced "monsters" have a home and a family in the carnival run by Elsa Mars (Jessica Lange), although their circus is struggling with attendance.

Ready to visit the Freak Show?

FX has unveiled the first promo for American Horror Story Season 4, which will once again be led by Jessica Lange.

This time, the Emmy-winning actress will star as the leader of an eccentric carnival in the 1950s. She'll be joined by such American Horry Story alumni as Sarah Paulson, Frances Conroy, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Evan Peters and Emma Roberts.

Michael Chiklis, meanwhile, will join the cast as the husband of Bassett's character.

What, specifically, can fans expect from the latest version of this drama? Creator Ryan Murphy remains mum. But the opening teaser features one very scary clown, so watch with one eye closed...
