2014 List of Banished Words and Phrases
Lake Superior State University in Michigan has released their 39th annual List of Banished Words and Phrases as we usher in 2014.
The group has receive tens of thousands of nominations for the list, and are getting close to having banished 1,000 words from ever again tripping off the tongues of the good citizens of the planet.
This year, according to the word-watchers, the list leader is SELFIE, the act of taking a photo of one's self and posting it to social media.
They explained, "People have taken pictures of themselves since the advent of film and cameras. We fear that to continue the over-used term might morph into DUALIES, to describe taking a photo of one's self and a friend. Heaven forbid!
TWERK/TWERKING is another set of terms they abhor. They suggest we harken back to something that worked well, "Let's just keep with the time-honored 'shake yer booty.'"
Another offender is HASHTAG. They assert, "It's #obnoxious #ridiculous #annoying and we wish it would disappear."
The rest of the words and phrases on the way out: TWITTERSPHERE, MISTER MOM, T-BONE, ON STERIODS, POCALYPSE, POLITICS, MORALLY BANKRUPT, OBAMACARE, SPORTS ADVERSITY and FAN BASE.
So let's get this straight. We can no longer say 'Washington is morally bankrupt and politics and Obamacare totally suck?' Got it...
