David Nelson, the last surviving member of The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet family sitcom, has died in Century City, California of complications of colon cancer at the age of 74. The show became synonymous with the 1950s ideal American family.
Nelson was the eldest son of Ozzie Nelson and Harriet Hilliard. His younger brother Ricky Nelson became a teen idol with a successful singing career.
The children joined their parents on their popular radio show in 1949 and then appeared on television in 1952 when their sitcom debuted. The boys were not originally signed to appear as regulars but the first show was so well received that the network welcomed them with open arms.
Ricky was showcased as the family comedian and David portrayed the serious sibling. The long running television mainstay ended in 1966 after an amazing 14-year run.
David went on to produce and direct television episodes of Adam-12 and Ozzie's Girls. His film credits include Childish Things, Death Screams, Last Plane Out, A Rare Breed and Easy to Be Free.
Ozzie and Harriet's eldest son received a coveted star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1996.
David Nelson is survived by his wife, Yvonne; sons John, Eric, James and Danny; daughter Teri. He is preceded in death by father Ozzie, who died of liver cancer in 1975; brother Rick , who died in a plane crash in 1985; and mother Harriet, who died of congestive heart failure in 1994.
