USS Green Bay Will Include Packer Memorabilia
This may well be the first time that NFL football team memorabilia is being incorporated into a naval vessel. The USS Green Bay will be commissioned January 24, 2009 in Long Beach California and will be assigned to the U.S. Pacific Fleet. The ship has become a really big deal for Wisconsin residents and Packer fans.
A partnership between Green Bay's namesake ship and the city has resulted in the collection of sports memorabilia for the past three years. A truckload of sports mementos is heading to San Diego, where the ship is docked.
The city sent a large mural reflecting many city features which will be hung in the ship's mess hall, forty-three Green Bay street signs to be place throughout the ship, three Super Bowl trophy replicas autographed by Bart Starr and Brett Favre and a key to the city.
As part of the launch festivities, Lombardi Middle School's jazz band and show choir will perform on January 22nd in the Lambeau Lounge, the ships cafeteria. A team of students will also face off against the USS Green Bay sailors in a Geography Bowl. At a recent news conference, Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt said, "The ship can never come to Green Bay so we decided to bring Green Bay to the ship."
The ship motto is: Stand and Fight, Remain Unvanquished.
Bitten and Bound and Green Bay Packer fans from all over the United States send warm wishes to the crew of the USS Green Bay as it is commissioned and joins the U.S. Pacific Fleet.
