The big news has broken and Joe Biden, 65, has been tapped to be Barack Obama's VP running mate. Much will be written about the U.S. Senator from Delaware, currently serving his 6th term. Jill Biden, the former Jill Tracy Jacobs, married Joe in 1977, some five years after Joe suffered the tragic loss of his first wife and infant daughter.
Joe married his first wife, Neilia Hunter Biden in 1966. She was killed in a car crash in 1972 that also took the life of the couple's baby Naomi Biden. Their sons Beau and Robert Hunter were also in the car and suffered serious injuries. The accident occurred one month before Biden, 30, was to take the oath of office for his first Senate term. He was sworn in at the hospital bedside of his children, who both fully recovered from their injuries.
Joe met Jill when she was at the University of Delaware. She is currently an English Professor, teaching at Delaware Technical Community College. Professionally, she has been a reading specialist, high school English teacher and a teacher at a mental health facility. Jill founded Biden Breast Health initiative which focuses on early breast cancer detection.
Joe had a serious health crisis in 1988 when he was hospitalized for two brain aneurysm's that kept him from his Senate duties for seven months.
Jill and Joe have a daughter Ashley Blazer Biden who was born in 1981. She is a social worker. Their son Joseph Beau Biden is Delaware's Attorney General and son Robert Hunter Biden is a lawyer. The couple also have 5 grandchildren: Naomi, Finnegan, Roberta Mabel, Natalie and Robert Hunter.
