Underground hip hop icon Sean Price passed away suddenly in his sleep this morning at his home in Brooklyn. He was 43 years old.

The cause of death is unknown at this time.

Price rose to fame in the mid-nineties as one half of the hip hop duo Heltah Skeltah. He went on to perform with rap supergroups Boot Camp Clik and Random Axe.

Price was known in the hip hop community for his one-of-a-kind mic skills and high-energy stage presence.

Rappers such as Killer Mike and Talib Kweli have already taken to Twitter to mourn Price and acknowledge his tremendous influence.

His death was first announced by DJ Premier, who shared a tribute to Price on Instagram.

Moments later, Price’s wife confirmed the news by posting a statement from his record label on her Facebook page:

"It is with beyond a heavy heart that Duck Down Music is sadly confirming that Sean Price passed away early this morning in his Brooklyn apartment, Saturday, August 8th, 2015.

"He’s survived by his wife, and his three children…Sean’s family and friends are asking for time to grieve and process the news. Further details will be issued when more information is available."

Price was working on a mixtape entitled Songs in the Key of Price at the time of his death.
