According to a press release, Kanye will be recognized "for his career-spanning groundbreaking videos, legendary VMA performances, and continued impact on music, art, fashion, and culture."

Past recipients of this major award have included Michael Jackson, Madonna, Peter Gabriel, Guns N’ Roses, Beastie Boys, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and Beyonce.

Kanye, of course, comes full circle in a way with this distinction.

Back in 2009, he made headlines at the VMAs for interrupting Taylor Swift on stage and arguing that Beyonce deserved her award.

The MTV Video Music Awards will air this Sunday evening, August 30, at 9/8c.

Miley Cyrus will host, while The Weeknd will debut the first-ever televised performance of his hit single “Can’t Feel My Face" and Swift will premiere her latest music video during the pre-show.
