"Recent liver surgery revealed that I have cancer that now is in other parts of my body," the 90-year wrote in a message posted on his official site.

"A more complete public statement will be made when facts are known, possibly next week."

Carter served as a Georgia senator and then as our 39th President (from 1977 to 1981). He also noted yesterday that he will be rearranging his schedule to undergo treatment at Emory Healthcare in Georgia.

According to The Associated Press, Carter had a small mass from his liver removed on August 3 and his "prognosis is excellent for a full recovery," Carter Center spokeswoman Deanna Congileo said at the time.

A father of four, has been married to former First Lady Rosalynn Carter since 1946.

We send him our best wishes for a complete recovery.
