All five contestants remaining on Season 30 of Survivor: Worlds Apart came into the finale with a chance to win, but of course there is only one winner.

Mike Holloway, Rodney Lavoie, Carolyn Rivera, Sierra Dawn Thomas, and Will Sims all thought they would be that champion. So who got it done?

Mike took the lead early by winning a challenge, earning time with his mother, Debra, who provided him an advantage for the next challenge, a maze.

The contestants were blindfolded when going through the waist-high puzzle, but Mike’s mom was not, leading her son through it in a dry run first.

It’s not clear if that actually did him much good, but regardless, Mike went on to win the challenge and earn himself immunity in the next tribal council.

There, Sierra was sent home.

The next challenge involved a giant water slide and building a lighthouse, and Mike won again, continuing his hot streak to the others’ chagrin.

The next tribal council elimination earned both Carolyn and Rodney two votes. A fire-making challenge broke the tie for Carolyn. See ya later, Rod.

With Mike, Carolyn, and Will headed into the final three, it came down to the jury’s votes, and Mike edged out Carolyn to claim the title this season.

During the reunion finale, he credited a higher power for helping him "make moves that otherwise you might not have had forethought to make."

"When your back is completely up against the wall and you know what position you’re in in this game and the only person that you can trust is yourself."

Higher power or not, he recommended that contestants next season learn how to handle firewood. No one can argue or get mad at him for that quote.
