Tyreese died on The Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 9.

But something even more important seemed to have perished when we picked up on The Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 10: Hope.

The survivors were exhausted, starving and seemingly demoralized.

Daryl was eating a worm for sustenance to open the hour, while Maggie was almost too tired and sad to stick a knife through a walker’s skull.

Meanwhile, Sasha’s search for water turned up only a trail of dead frogs. Could it get any worse? Yup: soon enough, the group was out of gas, prompting Rick to keep things simple and optimistic:

So we walk, he said.

Despite these hardships, there were some sentimental scenes along the way: Carol gave Daryl Beth’s knife on a (fruitless) hunting expedition, repeating to him the words “You’re not dead.”

Carl gave Maggie a broken music box.

Gabriel reached out to Maggie, saying he would listen if she ever wanted to chat. And Michonne attempted to help Sasha by comparing the her reaction to losing Tyreese to his reaction to losing Karen. It didn’t exactly go over well, however.

After the group pushed a bunch of walkers down a hill and Sasha nearly bit Rick, The Walking Dead made like The Leftover: A pack of feral dogs emerged from the woods.

Before they could attack, though, Sasha shot them all dead, leading to the most depressing and disturbing meal of all-time.

Just when all hope seemed lost (“I don’t know if I wanna fight anymore,” Maggie said at one point”), a giant delivery of bottled water appeared in the road along with a note saying that it was “from a friend.”

The survivors were afraid it was poison, however, and just as they were deciding what to do, the skies opened up. They gulped down rain water and took shelter in a barn.

But walkers, naturally, surrounded the barn, with everyone helping to keep the doors closed. They ended up getting impaled by fallen trees, Daryl ended up fixing the music box (temporarily) and Maggie appeared to turn a hopeful corner in trying to comfort Sasha.

You must watch The Walking Dead online to then see a stranger appear at the very end of the hour. He looked clean, handsome, as if he had actually showered and found a Laundromat.

He asked to be taken to the group’s "leader" and said intriguingly: "I have good news."

Tune in to The Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 11 ("The Distance") next Sunday to learn what that is!
