It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s a major casting announcement by CBS!

Melissa Benoist, best known for her role as Marley Rose on Glee, has been tapped to portray Supergirl on an upcoming CBS drama.

The series will center on Kara Zor-el, Clark Kent’s cousin, who escaped her home planet of Krypton prior to its total destruction many years ago.

Since coming to Earth, the character has the powers she shares with her iconic relative. But now, at age 24, she has chosen to embrace these superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be.

"She’s dealing with family issues. She’s dealing with work issues. It’s a female empowerment story," CBS President Nina Tassler said this month.

"If you look at the strong female characters we have on the air, it really is resonant of that … We’re big feminists. It’s her intellect, it’s her skill, it’s her smarts. It’s all of those elements. It’s not just her strength, which she does have."

"In addition to role run as Marley (watch Glee online for more), Benoist’s resumes include appearances on Homeland and The Good Wife, plus a supporting role in the Oscar-nominated film Whiplash.
