Sean Penn and Charlize Theron engaged, according to celebrity news reports, having secretly marked the milestone on a trip to Paris this past November.

There is no ring, and no big wedding plan, but they are committed.

They “decided to take their relationship to the next level,” a source tells Us of Theron, 39, and Penn, 54, who first stepped out together as a couple last December.

Commitment has never been a problem. Just the extravaganza.

“Let’s put it this way,” she told Vogue in a recent interview, explaining why she does not want a big wedding, or any. “I never had the dream of the white dress.”

“And watching other people getting married? I think it’s beautiful for them, but to be quite honest, usually I’m sitting there just devastated,” she admitted.

“It’s supposed to be this night of celebrating love, and all you see is a couple separated all night making sure everybody else is okay,” Theron went on.

“It just looks like a lot of work,” the actress said, but that’s not what it’s all about. “As you get older, you start sifting through the stuff that really matters.”

Will Sean Penn and Charlize Theron actually get married?

That remains to be seen, but for his part, the actor has been married twice before, to Madonna from 1985-89, and then to Robin Wright from 1996-2010.

He and Robin are parents to two grown children, Hopper Penn, 21, and Dylan Penn, 23. Charlize Theron is the adopted mother of a son, Jackson, 2.

Congratulations to the final celebrity couple to get engaged here in 2014 … although someone could still pop the question this evening, we suppose.

Looking at you, Patrick Schwarzenegger. Do it! Do it!
