The remains of movie executive Gavin Smith, who disappeared more than two years ago, have been found in California, law enforcement officials confirm.

Lt. Larry Dietz of the Los Angeles County coroner’s office said early Thursday morning that the remains of Gavin Smith have been positively identified.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s office says hikers discovered the remains in a rural area of Palmdale on October 26, but it took until now to confirm.

Results of the autopsy have not yet been finalized.

Smith, who worked for 20th Century Fox, vanished in May 2012, and his disappearance was investigated as a murder, though suicide was also considered.

The case baffled investigators for many months.

Authorities said earlier they had discovered his car at a storage facility, and its condition, along with witness statements, led them to believe he was killed.

His remains had not been found at that point.

Various news reports earlier this year said that Gavin Smith had officially been declared dead, even though a body had yet to be found at that juncture.
